The Troubled Triangle - U.S.-Pakistan Relations under the Taliban's Shadow (Hardcover): Zafar Iqbal Yousafzai The Troubled Triangle - U.S.-Pakistan Relations under the Taliban's Shadow (Hardcover)
Zafar Iqbal Yousafzai
R4,139 Discovery Miles 41 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the Taliban, and how it has affected post-9/11 U.S.-Pakistan relations. It analyzes the genesis of the Taliban, the rationale behind their emergence and how they consolidated their rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. It examines the U.S. policies towards the Taliban in the post 9/11 era and Pakistan's role as an ally in their efforts towards dismantling Taliban rule in Afghanistan-from Obama's 'fight and talk' policy to the Doha peace agreement in 2020. It also discusses the outcomes of the Global War on Terror (GWoT), as well as the Taliban's response to the U.S.-led ISAF and NATO forces in Afghanistan. The volume brings into focus Pakistan's policies vis-a-vis the Taliban following the start of GWoT and how it pushed the U.S.-Pakistan relations to its lowest ebb; and then its role in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table which resulted in the U.S.-Taliban deal in Doha in February 2020. The author introduces a 'new balance of threat' theory and expands on its applicability through the Taliban case study. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of U.S. foreign policy, international relations, peace and conflict studies, strategic studies, history, diplomatic studies and South Asian politics.

Press Silence in Postcolonial Zimbabwe - News Whiteouts, Journalism and Power (Paperback): Zvenyika Eckson Mugari Press Silence in Postcolonial Zimbabwe - News Whiteouts, Journalism and Power (Paperback)
Zvenyika Eckson Mugari
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on news silence in Zimbabwe, taking as a point of departure the (in)famous blank spaces (whiteouts) which newspapers published to protest official censorship policy imposed by the Rhodesian government from the mid-1960s to the end of that decade. Based on archived news content, the author investigates the cause(s) of the disappearance of blank spaces in Zimbabwe's newspapers and establishes whether and how the blank spaces may have been continued by stealth and proposes a model of doing journalism where news is inclusive, just and less productive of blank spaces. The author explores the broader ramifications of news silences, tacit or covert on society's sense of the world and their place in it. It questions whether and how news media continued with the practice of epistemic deletions and continue to draw on the colonial archive for conceptual maps with which to define and interpret contemporary postcolonial realities and challenges in Zimbabwe. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers and academics researching the press in contemporary Africa, critical media analysis, media and society studies, and news as discourse.

The Translation of Violence in Children's Literature - Images from the Western Balkans (Hardcover): Marija Todorova The Translation of Violence in Children's Literature - Images from the Western Balkans (Hardcover)
Marija Todorova
R4,139 Discovery Miles 41 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Considering children's literature as a powerful repository for creating and proliferating cultural and national identities, this monograph is the first academic study of children's literature in translation from the Western Balkans. Marija Todorova looks at a broad range of children's literature, from fiction to creative non-fiction and picture books, across five different countries in the Western Balkans, with each chapter including detailed textual and visual analysis through the predominant lens of violence. These chapters raise questions around who initiates and effectuates the selection of children's literature from the Western Balkans for translation into English, and interrogate the role of different stakeholders, such as translators, publishers and cultural institutions in the representation and construction of these countries in translated children's literature, both in text and visually. Given the combination of this study's interdisciplinary nature and Todorova's detailed analysis, this book will prove to be an essential resource for professional translators, researchers and students in courses in translation studies, children's literature or area studies, especially that of countries in the Western Balkans. .

East Asia, Peacekeeping Operations, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (Hardcover): Catherine Jones, Garren Mulloy East Asia, Peacekeeping Operations, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (Hardcover)
Catherine Jones, Garren Mulloy
R3,979 Discovery Miles 39 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Focusing on East Asia, this collection explores the paradox of functional regional cooperation in the areas of humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and UN Peacekeeping operations, in a context of increasing regional tensions and threats. East Asia - comprising the states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea - is facing a range of human, traditional, climate and ideational threats. In addressing some of these threats particularly those arising from climate induced disasters this region has been able to develop some ad-hoc cooperative practices that, according to functional logics of regional integration, could lead to longer term sustained coordinated responses and even regional partnerships. Similarly, the region is increasingly contributing to UN peacekeeping operations where these states also cooperate in the context of an UN-led mission. Yet, despite the potential for these interactions to lead to greater regional integration and coordinated action in responding to a range of security threats, these interactions are increasingly taking place in a context of animosity both between regional powers and with extra-regional powers. This edited collection explores these functional interactions and posits conclusions about the potential for longer term sustained coordinated action. These papers engage with a range of theoretical approaches in explaining the patterns of relations that are present in the region in relation to humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and UN peacekeeping operations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Australian Journal of International Affairs.

Mothers and Schooling - Poverty, Gender and Educational Decision-Making in Rural Kenya (Hardcover): Fibian Lukalo Mothers and Schooling - Poverty, Gender and Educational Decision-Making in Rural Kenya (Hardcover)
Fibian Lukalo
R4,148 Discovery Miles 41 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This ground-breaking book opens new horizons in understanding educational decision-making and how schooling patterns are shaped by, and reshape, rural communities. It provides a humane portrait of the struggles faced by mothers in rural Kenya to educate their children, despite the 'free education policy'. Based on a prize-winning study examining mothers' attitudes to education in a rural Kenyan community, this vividly nuanced ethnographic work draws upon African feminist perspectives to describe the livelihoods and aspirations of 32 mothers responsible for over 180 children. It explores the effects of mothers' school histories and the constraining effects of land practices and patriarchal culture on their actions. Their school choice and engagement strategies reflect different facilitating environments, their educational values, the use of social mothering practices and reliance on kinship reciprocity. The findings illustrate the importance of recognising the diversity of mothers' situations within this small community and the pressures they face to be 'good mothers' who school their children. Mothers and Schooling highlights the importance of mothers' educational agency and is essential reading for anthropologists of education, those working in gender studies, poverty alleviation strategists, educational researchers, teachers and policy-makers who wish to improve the success of Education for All for the children of women living in Southern rural poverty.

In this edited collection contributors examine key themes, sources and methods in contemporary African Philosophy, building on a wide-ranging understanding of what constitutes African philosophy, and drawing from a variety of both oral and written texts of different genres. Part two reflects on the (re)definition of philosophy from an African vantage point and African philosophy's thrust to create its own canon, archive and resources to study African concepts, artefacts, practices and texts from the perspective of intellectual history. The volume aims to make a contribution to the academic debate on African philosophy and philosophy more broadly, challenging orthodox definitions and genres, in favour of a broadening of the discipline's self-understanding and locales. War and Peace in Contemporary India (Hardcover): Rudra Chaudhuri War and Peace in Contemporary India (Hardcover)
Rudra Chaudhuri
R4,127 Discovery Miles 41 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

War and Peace in Contemporary India examines the importance of institutions and the role played by international actors in crucial episodes of India's strategic history. The contributions trace India's tryst with war and peace from immediately before the foundation of the contemporary Indian state, to the last military conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999. The focus of the chapters included in this edited volume is as much on India as it is on Pakistan and China, its opponents in war. The chapters offer a fresh take on the creation of India as a regional military power, and her approach to War and Peace in the post-independence period. Importantly, it advances the broader work on Indian strategic history during the Cold War and after, an otherwise under-studied intellectual landscape. The book offers fresh insights based on archival work, as well as a closer conceptual reading of Indian, British and American decision making at times of war and peace in contemporary India. This book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers and students interested in strategic studies, diplomatic and military history, international diplomacy, as well as Indian history and politics. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Strategic Studies.

Bengalis in Burma - A Colonial Encounter (1886-1948) (Hardcover): Parthasarathi Bhaumik Bengalis in Burma - A Colonial Encounter (1886-1948) (Hardcover)
Parthasarathi Bhaumik
R4,129 Discovery Miles 41 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bengalis in Burma looks at Bengali migrations and settlements in Burma from 1886 until the end of the British rule in Burma in 1948. As a result of British colonial policies, thousands of Bengalis from various classes and places in Bengal migrated to Burma and established Bengali communities in different parts of the country. The book provides a study of a vast body of Bangla writings on Burma written during this period by the Bengalis, a majority of whom went to Burma in various capacities and with various objectives. It takes note of a complex network of power, subjugation, and resistance which is integrally related to these acts of representation in Bangla textual discourses. Drawing on stories, political discussions in Bangla journals, unknown autobiographies, travelogues, and uncelebrated poems, it explores the ways contemporary Bengalis looked at Burma for various reasons and wondered about their locations within colonial systems. An important contribution to the study of South Asia, the book brings forth issues of representation, colonial knowledge system, and modernity. It will be of interest to students and researchers of history, literature, migration studies, colonialism, and South Asian studies.

Community Resilience - A Critical Approach (Hardcover): Katy Wright Community Resilience - A Critical Approach (Hardcover)
Katy Wright
R4,140 Discovery Miles 41 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an alternative perspective on community resilience, drawing on critical sociological and social policy insights about how people individually and collectively cope with different kinds of adversity. Based on the idea that resilience is more than simply an invention of neoliberal governments, this book explores diverse expressions of resilience and considers what supports and undermines people's resilience in different contexts. Focusing on the United Kingdom, it examines the contradictions and limitations of neoliberal resilience policies and the role of policy in shaping how vulnerabilities are distributed and how resilience is manifested. The book explores different types of resilience including planning, response, recovery, adaptation and transformation, which are examined in relation to different types of threat such as financial hardship, disasters and climate change. It argues that resilience cannot act as an antidote to vulnerability, and aims to demonstrate the importance of shared institutions in underpinning resilience and in preventing socially created vulnerabilities. It will be of interest to academics, students and well-informed practitioners working with the concept of resilience within the subject areas of Sociology, Social Policy, Human Geography, Environmental Humanities and International Development.
