Religious Education as a Dialogue with Difference addresses current issues over the study of religion in publicly maintained schools. Are liberal, inclusive approaches to the study of religion suited to the aims of education in a democracy? Do liberal democratic aims offer the right framework for the study of religion? By presenting research on English secondary school pupils' motivation in religious education, this volume argues that religious education is best understood as a democratic dialogue with difference. The book offers empirical evidence for this claim, and it demonstrates how learners gain in religious literacy, both through the exercise of democratic citizenship in the classroom and towards the goal of life-long democratic citizenship.
It’s Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of a new month in the Jewish calendar! In celebration of this monthly event, a family goes out to the Negev Desert to camp out and observe the moon. A photo essay about the changing phases of the moon and their relationship to the Jewish calendar, this beautifully photographed book explains the basics of the Jewish calendar, which is based on the moon rather than the sun. Instructions for building a papier mache moon are included. This book is the fifth in Kar-Ben’s “Nature in Israel” holiday series by this author/photographer team.

The Education Reform Act of 1988 has caused a revolution in the educational system of England and Wales. The educational tradition and practice of more than 100 years was swept away and schools found that the system of which they were part and which had been one of the most decentralized in Europe was now one of the most centralized. A National Curriculum emerged with profile components, attainment targets, programmes of study and statements of attainment along with a requirement for formal assessment at the end of four key stages in a pupil's educational career. Within these new requirements were embedded a number of concerns for clearly identified skills, knowledge and understanding, for development and progression.
It's a very special night for the angels of heaven. An incredibly important baby has been born, and they need to find the best and brightest star to lead travellers to him. So what will they do when very smallest star in the sky asks to play the part? This delightful full-colour picture book for children from award-winning author Hilary Robinson is a wonderful new retelling of the first Christmas story. A heart-warming tale of creating space for even the smallest and most humble of characters to shine, children and adults alike will be enchanted by the story of The Christmas Star. The characters and story are brought to life in stunning illustrations by Ciara Ni Dhuinn, and the clear, simple text is perfect for 3-5 year olds just starting to read and for adults to read aloud. This is a prayer book for teenagers, containing prayers in a range of styles, arranged thematically. Here are prayers about exams, bullying, relationships, the environment, sex, bereavement, and much, much more. The prayers themselves are numbered for ease of reference and feature a mix of ancient and modern styles, encouraging young people of many different temperaments to develop their own prayer life, as the prayers of others open spiritual doors for them. "When sudden, unexpected circumstances hit," explains Martin Saunders, "even the most hardened atheist can be known to turn to prayer. The desire and need to pray is created inside each one of us at the same time we get spleens, eyeballs and collarbones. Like a computer program which is created to contact its manufacturers regularly and 'request latest updates, ' so we are born with an innate desire to talk to our maker. "That's why, in those desperate moments when we do turn to prayer, we instantly feel some level of comfort. That's why, to stretch the software analogy a little further, we often walk away from prayer feeling refreshed, updated and upgraded."
