Pope Benedict XVI - A Biography (Hardcover): Joann F. Price Pope Benedict XVI - A Biography (Hardcover)
Joann F. Price
R1,292 Discovery Miles 12 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This comprehensive biography of Pope Benedict XVI emphasizes his theological positions and contributions as a theologian. Pope Benedict XVI: A Biography is an incisive exploration of the life and career of the current head of the Roman Catholic Church, with an emphasis on his theological positions and contributions as a theologian. Written by a Catholic priest who is an expert on Bavarian theology, the book looks at Benedict's family life, his teen years in Nazi Germany, his rise in the Church, and the beliefs that shape his Papacy. Readers of this biography will learn that, in addition to his native German, Benedict XVI speaks Italian, French, English, Spanish, and Latin fluently, has a knowledge of Portuguese, and can read ancient Greek and biblical Hebrew. They will discover that he plays the piano and is very fond of cats. Perhaps surprisingly, they will find that during the time of the Second Vatican Council, the Pope was viewed as a reformer, and that he continues to regard himself as a supporter of the Council's teaching, holding, however, that those teachings have been widely misinterpreted. All this and more make for a fascinating-and instructive-reading experience. Photographs Lightly annotated bibliography

Charity and Giving in Monotheistic Religions (Hardcover): Miriam Frenkel, Yaacov Lev Charity and Giving in Monotheistic Religions (Hardcover)
Miriam Frenkel, Yaacov Lev
R5,408 Discovery Miles 54 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with various manifestations of charity or giving in the contexts of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim societies in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages. Monotheistic charity and giving display many common features. These underlying similarities reflect a commonly shared view about God and his relations to mankind and what humans owe to God and expect from him. Nevertheless, the fact that the emphasis is placed on similarities does not mean that the uniqueness of the concepts of charity and giving in the three monotheistic religions is denied. The contributors of the book deal with such heterogeneous topics like the language of social justice in early Christian homilies as well as charity and pious endowments in medieval Syria, Egypt and al-Andalus during the 11th-15th centuries. This wide range of approaches distinguish the book from other works on charity and giving in monotheistic religions.

Between Terror and Tolerance - Religious Leaders, Conflict, and Peacemaking (Paperback): Timothy D. Sisk Between Terror and Tolerance - Religious Leaders, Conflict, and Peacemaking (Paperback)
Timothy D. Sisk
R788 Discovery Miles 7 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Civil war and conflict within countries is the most prevalent threat to peace and security in the opening decades of the twenty-first century. A pivotal factor in the escalation of tensions to open conflict is the role of elites in exacerbating tensions along identity lines by giving the ideological justification, moral reasoning, and call to violence. "Between Terror and Tolerance "examines the varied roles of religious leaders in societies deeply divided by ethnic, racial, or religious conflict. The chapters in this book explore cases when religious leaders have justified or catalyzed violence along identity lines, and other instances when religious elites have played a critical role in easing tensions or even laying the foundation for peace and reconciliation.

This volume features thematic chapters on the linkages between religion, nationalism, and intolerance, transnational intra-faith conflict in the Shi'a-Sunni divide, and country case studies of societal divisions or conflicts in Egypt, Israel and Palestine, Kashmir, Lebanon, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Tajikistan. The concluding chapter explores the findings and their implications for policies and programs of international non-governmental organizations that seek to encourage and enhance the capacity of religious leaders to play a constructive role in conflict resolution.

Wake Up-God's Talking to You (Hardcover): Manny Dean Fernandez Wake Up-God's Talking to You (Hardcover)
Manny Dean Fernandez
R708 Discovery Miles 7 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the beginning of time, God has spoken to people in their dreams. Through them he has reached out to both men of God?Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Jacob, and his dream interpreter son, Joseph?and ungodly men and women, like Pharaoh or Pontius Pilate's wife. Even today, God has not stopped speaking to us in our dreams. We simply stopped listening or being aware of Him.

More than twenty years ago, after God woke him up one night with an incredible dream, author Manny Fernandez set off on a lifelong journey to explore what could be learned from dreams. He made it his mission to teach others how to remember their dreams and, with God's help, interpret their meaning. In his guidebook, Fernandez includes his own diary of dreams, associated Scriptures and explanations, ways to remember and understand God's special messages, an examination of parables, and his ideas for connecting with God through dreams and prayer.

"Wake Up?God's Talking to You" is an innovative teaching tool that guides spiritual seekers through all the ways God speaks to us through dreams and brings us closer to Him.

Leadership from the Inside Out reveals that God alone appoints leaders and that divine appointment is the single greatest factor determining a leader's success. He has been inspired by the Lord to write words of encouragement and inspiration to share with those who believe in God. Each of these poetic letters is an inspiration of people, places, and things.

These letters have been written to clarify our views because all of us are searching for answers to many of life's challenging questions without knowing where to search to find the answers. "A Beacon of Hope" is vessel for gaining peace of mind for those things that we don't understand, thus allowing us to understand and embrace the paths that have been set before us in love. "

My prayer is that you receive this with an open heart and after you get it continue to trust in God
God can if you trust Him and He will if you continue to place your hope in Him Every tiny tree hopes to become full grown and you should have the desire to please your God
I see you as a complete success because you fixed your heart on climbing the highest mountain
There is no greater place in heaven or on this earth to put your hope than to hope in God"

When Religion Meets New Media (Hardcover): Heidi Campbell When Religion Meets New Media (Hardcover)
Heidi Campbell
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This lively book focuses on how different Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities engage with new media. Rather than simply reject or accept new media, religious communities negotiate complex relationships with these technologies in light of their history and beliefs. Heidi Campbell suggests a method for studying these processes she calls the "religious-social shaping of technology" and students are asked to consider four key areas: religious tradition and history; contemporary community values and priorities; negotiation and innovating technology in light of the community; communal discourses applied to justify use. A wealth of examples such as the Christian e-vangelism movement, Modern Islamic discourses about computers and the rise of the Jewish kosher cell phone, demonstrate the dominant strategies which emerge for religious media users, as well as the unique motivations that guide specific groups.

Martyrdom: A Guide for the Perplexed (Hardcover, New): Paul Middleton Martyrdom: A Guide for the Perplexed (Hardcover, New)
Paul Middleton
R3,174 Discovery Miles 31 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It can be said, almost without exaggeration, that martyrdom has become one of the most pressing theological issues facing the contemporary world. Since the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, the world has had to face up to an Islamic manifestation of martyrdom. Martyrdom has a long history; as long as individuals have been dying for their faith or cause, others have been telling and more importantly, interpreting their stories. These martyrologies are essentially conflict stories. Whether a Christian confessing her faith before a bemused Roman governor, or a suicide bomber blowing himself up in a crowed cafe in Jerusalem, the way these stories are recounted - positively or negatively - reflect a wider conflict in which the narrator and his community find themselves. Martyr narratives, whether textual, oral, or even a CNN news report, do more than simply report a death; they also contain the interpretative framework by which that death is understood - again positively or negatively. When the death of a martyr is reported, the way in which that story is told places that death within a larger narrative of conflict, which may be regional, global, or even cosmic. The martyr becomes a symbol of the community's desires and hopes, or for that matter, their terrors and fears, but in either case, the martyr is representative of a larger struggle, and often martyrology contains the vision of how the community envisages final victory over their enemy. This book aims to illuminate the way these conflict stories have been told and function (principally, though not exclusively) within Christian, Jewish, and Islamic communities. Continuum's "Guides for the Perplexed" are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

Islamic Da'wah in the West - Muslim Missionary Activity and the Dynamics of Conversion to Islam (Hardcover): Larry Poston Islamic Da'wah in the West - Muslim Missionary Activity and the Dynamics of Conversion to Islam (Hardcover)
Larry Poston
R4,375 Discovery Miles 43 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains the concept of Islamic "da'wah," or missionary activity, as it has developed in contemporary Western contexts. Poston traces the transition from the early "external-institutional" missionary approach impracticable in modern Western society, to an "internal-personal" approach which aims at the conversion of individuals and seeks to influence society from the bottom upwards. Poston also combines the results of a questionnaire-survey with an analysis of published testimonies to identify significant traits that distinguish converts to Islam.
