Strugglebook - A Logical Search for the Truth of God (Paperback): Robert Thornborough Strugglebook - A Logical Search for the Truth of God (Paperback)
Robert Thornborough
R505 Discovery Miles 5 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Strugglebook: A Logical Search for the Truth of GOD" explores the probability for the existence of God based primarily on the logic derived from science. While it addresses issues applicable to theology, it is not a theological work. There are literally hundreds of books on this subject, most detailing a standard set of arguments. This book follows that pattern for the first part but then extends itself into a series of coalescing arguments built on the latest science, all of which results in a unique presentation on the subject. Forming a conclusion respecting the reality of God on something as cold as logic is contrary to approaches generally considered acceptable to religious organizations that favor perhaps more ephemeral means based on redemption and faith. Those approaches based on other than logic have proven very successful for many individuals. That notwithstanding, the author is representative of that very large group of people who live in environments replete with corporate missions, budget building and spreadsheets, strength, weakness, opportunity and threat exercises, performance yields, compensation management, management by objective, measuring outcomes, and mini-MBA courses. The resulting objectivity built through vocation, results for many individuals, including the author, in a need to question the rationale behind faith and God. This book is the record of a search for the reality of God consistent with satisfying the needs dictated by the logic often demanded by the modern mind. Do world and personal events result in a questioning of your faith? Do you wonder about a God that could allow 9/11 or the deaths of tens of thousands in a cyclone? Have you watched as someone you love suffers, and as a result, questioned the very existence of God? Have the truths of modern science served to displace your belief in God? Does your working life consumed with spreadsheets, schedules, logical analysis, objectives, investment returns, getting the job done on time, and all the other appendages of working life impose an atmosphere that works against belief in God? Do you feel unsure about sharing your beliefs with others because you may be ridiculed? Have you been exposed to the views of Richard Dawkins through his book The God Delusion, or other well known atheists who attempt seemingly with some success to use science to prove God doesn't exist and in so doing, relegate your beliefs as unworthy? These questions and situations imposed themselves on the author of this book, an educator and computer application designer who decided to take a year out of his life and find the answers. This book chronicles his search for the truth of God. Calling on history and using the very latest scientific knowledge, coupled with related philosophy, and sometimes delivered somewhat irreverently, the book delves into the issues, presenting positive and dissenting views respecting the existence of God and then argues the case from the data presented. The reader shares the full rationale for decisions made.

To everyone who has ever laid in bed wondering about life after death, or the existence of God.

For all of us, reaching out for any tiny piece of evidence to corroborate our beliefs, or strengthen our doubts. For everyone undergoing a serious illness at home, or in the hospital, or are nearing the end of our journey, and now reside in a hospice, or nursing home. For all of us crying out for some sense to our suffering, this book may offer some relief.

This book is not meant to be an academic study, but a source of hope, a comforting perspective, and a reassurance of the existence of God.

It is my presumption that the actual orders of creation are very similar. In fact when compared to any other religious beliefs, Genesis is the closest in description, to the actual scientific order of creation we know today.

This book is an informal look at the origins of life on this planet, looking at science and Genesis.

The question is simple. Does the Book of Genesis, written thousands of years ago, accurately describe the chronological Order of Creation on this planet?

Is this coincidence, or divine inspiration?

Dr. Stringer has done a masterful job of presenting a history of the world through the prism of Scripture and godly perspective. The current godless, secular culture completely ignores the foundational philosophies and events which have shaped the world in which we live. These are presented factually and carefully in Dr. Stringer's masterful work. Many highly recommend this work.

George MacDonald
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this 3 series of Unspoken Sermons, George MacDonald states his theological views and among other things. The work itself is a Christian classic spoken of highly by C.S. Lewis. In his introduction to George MacDonald: An Anthology, C. S. Lewis wrote of MacDonald's theology: "This collection, as I have said, was designed not to revive MacDonald's literary reputation but to spread his religious teaching. Hence most of my extracts are taken from the three volumes of "Unspoken Sermons." My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help-sometimes indispensable help toward the very acceptance of the Christian faith." Never one to shy away from a difficulty, MacDonald explores some of the most challenging and perplexing passages in the Gospels, each time rising to newer heights in his elucidation of the mysteries of Gods Love.

Jim Covell, Karen Covell, Victorya Michaels Rogers
R359 Discovery Miles 3 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Day I Met God is a collection of unique, powerful stories told by Americans with one thing in common. Young and old, rich and poor, famous and infamous -- they were all searching for something to fill a void in their lives, and they all found it in a personal, life-changing encounter with God. Their amazing stories show how God used the circumstances of their lives -- good, bad, and worse -- to arrange a meeting with Himself. Through miraculous visions, quiet revelations, life and death situations, or gentle persuasion, these people met God, and He filled their empty hearts with freedom, joy, and hope.

On the Afterlife - You Will Get There from Here (Paperback): G.V. Loewen On the Afterlife - You Will Get There from Here (Paperback)
G.V. Loewen
R305 Discovery Miles 3 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In On the Afterlife: You Will Get There from Here, author G. V. Loewen presents a new, fascinating model of the concepts of the afterlife, from early human societies to our own. Based on four "types," this theory stands apart from any kind of personal evaluation or judgment, whether or not the reader believes in the afterlife - either in the form of a return to life in this world, or a continuation of life in some other realm - or not. A fifth "type" is designated by the concept of "nothingness," an integral element of understanding what happens when we die. Beginning with a discourse on how we remember and memorialize life in death, and ending with a chapter on ethics, On the Afterlife: You Will Get There from Here demonstrates how the obligation is on us as human beings to make our lives worth dying for. This intriguing book will change the way you think of the afterlife. About the Author: G. V. Loewen is professor of the sociology of religion at The University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Canada. The author of twelve scholarly books, he is currently writing about people's personal experiences of art. Voices from the Story (Paperback): Rev. Dr. Sally Stevens Smith Voices from the Story (Paperback)
Rev. Dr. Sally Stevens Smith
R391 R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Save R22 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Have you ever wondered why some biblical characters act the way they do? How could Joseph forgive his brothers after they sold him into slavery? What gave Mary the courage to say "yes" to God when she might have been stoned to death? Fascinating people of faith emerge from the pages of scripture, telling tales of faith and doubt, healing and hope. For years, the Rev. Dr. Sally Stevens Smith has been bringing them to life for congregations in first person story/sermons. The sermons in Voices from the Story are based directly on biblical texts, supplemented by scholarship, faith and imagination. Dr. Smith enters the stories of the characters and relates their feelings and experiences to ours. We share Cain's pain when God rejects his gift, and remember how rejection can affect us. We rejoice when the bent woman stands up straight after 18 years, and think of ways people are bent over today. Though the inhabitants of the Bible lived long ago and far away, they share our humanity. Like them, we wonder what God is doing in this aching world. Like them, we ask how we can be healed and what it means to live in faith. This book invites you to step into the biblical story and discover that it is your own.

Dr. Morey's ministry is recommended by some of the best-known Christians leaders in this generation: D. James Kennedy, John Ankerberg, Gordon Clark, John Frame, Cornelius Van Til, Walter Martin, Gleason Archer, Stephen Olford, Francis A. Schaeffer and many others. He is the author of over fifty-eight books. "This book is "practical" in the best sense; not a mere simplification, but an attempt to communicate solid content; to warm the heart; and to move the will to obedience as well as to inform the mind. This is done quite skillfully without any reluctance to get into some depth." Prof. John M. Frame (Reformed Theological Seminary) "Dr. Morey has provided a very useful work dealing with both the accomplishment and the application of the redemptive work of Christ. This is presented in a soundly Reformed perspective and deals in a straightforward manner with all the major issues to be considered. An interesting original approach to the order of salvation is to be noted." Dr. Roger Nicole (Reformed Theological Seminary) "We recommend this 300+ page book as a fine statement of the doctrine of the Atonement. It is comprehensive, readable, practical and Scriptural. We hope it finds wide acceptance." Puritan Reformed Book Club Dr. Robert A. Morey Ph.D., D. Min., D.D. Faith Defenders http: //www.faithdefenders.com

The 1980s produced an unprecedented large amount of literature and a vigorous debate on the purpose and nature of theological education in North America. Surveying and probing the major positions in this debate, David H. Kelsey argues in this book that the central differences between various voices in theological education emerge most clearly when viewed in light of "Athens" and "Berlin."For Kelsey, "Athens" and "Berlin" represent two very different--and ultimately irreconcilable--models of excellent education. In the case of de facto, says Kelsey, that modern North American theological education, for historical reasons, is committed to both models, resulting in ongoing tensions and struggles. Kelsey shows how a variety of significant thinkers--Newman, Niebuhr, Farley, Stackhouse, and several others--fit in the Athens-Berlin framework. In presenting a keen analysis of major themes and patterns of movement in the theological education debate, Between Athens and Berlin itself makes a significant contribution to the debate.

We now pick up our story by returning to the Bible and the book of Genesis. 16:3 and Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 16:11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and thou shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. 16:12 and he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand will be against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. It should be noted at this point that Ishmael was the firstborn son of Abraham. Borne to him by his WIFE Hagar. This is a very important fact which is usually overlooked in the reading of the Bible. We will now advance 13 years to the circumstances of the more noted second son. Again in Genesis we read; 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her .
