Big Brown - The Untold Story of UPS (Hardcover): Greg Niemann Big Brown - The Untold Story of UPS (Hardcover)
Greg Niemann
R637 R540 Discovery Miles 5 400 Save R97 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although its brown vans are on every block and its delivery service reaches more than 200 countries, UPS is among the world's most underestimated and misunderstood companies.

For the first time, a UPS "lifer" tells the behind-the-scenes story of how a small messenger service became a business giant. "Big Brown" reveals the remarkable 100-year history of UPS and the life of its founder Jim Casey--one of the greatest "unknown" capitalists of the twentieth century. Casey pursued a Spartan business philosophy that emphasized military discipline, drab uniforms, and reliability over flash--a model that is still reflected in UPS culture today.

"Big Brown" examines all the seeming paradoxes about UPS: from its traditional management style and strict policies coupled with high employee loyalty and strong labor relations; from its historical "anti-marketing" bias (why brown?) to its sterling brand loyalty and reputation for quality.

Roads, Runways and Resistance - From the Newbury Bypass to Extinction Rebellion (Paperback): Steve Melia Roads, Runways and Resistance - From the Newbury Bypass to Extinction Rebellion (Paperback)
Steve Melia
R497 Discovery Miles 4 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'As a movement for social change it is important that we understand our own history. This is a compelling read.' From the anti-roads protests of the 1990s to HS2 and Extinction Rebellion, conflict and protest have shaped the politics of transport. In 1989, Margaret Thatcher's government announced 'the biggest road-building programme since the Romans.' This is the inside story of the thirty tumultuous years that have followed. Roads, Runways and Resistance draws on over 50 interviews with government ministers, advisors and protestors - many of whom, including 'Swampy', speak here for the first time about the events they describe. It is a story of transport ministers undermined by their own Prime Ministers, protestors attacked or quietly supported by the police, and smartly-dressed protestors who found a way onto the roof of the Houses of Parliament. Today, as a new wave of road building and airport expansion threatens to bust Britain's carbon budgets, climate change protestors find themselves on a collision course with the government. Melia asks, what difference did the protests of the past make? And what impacts might today's protest movements have on the transport of the future?

A Trucker's Tale - Wit, Wisdom, and True Stories from 60 Years on the Road (Hardcover): Ed Miller A Trucker's Tale - Wit, Wisdom, and True Stories from 60 Years on the Road (Hardcover)
Ed Miller
R413 Discovery Miles 4 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Wit, wisdom, adventure, and revelations from sixty years on the road. They say that only truck drivers experience the true grandeur and landscape of America: the winding mountainsides at sunrise, the first frosts of winter descending on apple orchards, the call of the rising roosters. In A Trucker's Tale, Ed Miller gives an inside look at the allure of the work and the colorful characters who haul our goods on the open road. He shares what it was like to grow up in a boisterous trucking family, his experience as an equipment officer in Vietnam, the wide range of vehicles he's mounted, and the daily trials, tribulations, risks, and exploits that define life as a trucker. Ed's vibrant, no-holds-barred tales are hilarious and heartwarming, sometimes cringeworthy or unbelievable-recollections of heroic feels as well as the "fishing stories" that have stretched and shifted from CB radio to CB radio. Many are the results of what he calls, "just plain stupidity." Others bring to light the small acts of kindness and grand gestures that these Knights of the Highway perform each day, as well as the safety risks and continual danger that these essential workers endure. Together they paint a compelling portrait of one of the most important, but least-known industries, and reveal why Ed, and so many like him, just kept on truckin'.

Motor Coaches and Charabancs (Paperback): James Taylor Motor Coaches and Charabancs (Paperback)
James Taylor
R220 Discovery Miles 2 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The coach - distinguished from the bus by its use for longer-haul and more comfortable trips - has a long and august history. Its origins lie in the charabanc, a long open-topped vehicle used to transport passengers on works outings and pleasure excursions. Over time, coaches came to be enclosed and fitted with more comfortable seating and higher-quality bodywork than the charabancs and the buses used on shorter routes. By the 1960s and 1970s on-board toilets began to be fitted, and despite a decline due to private car ownership, coach travel remains popular, with Wi-Fi, electric sockets and even video screens now built in. This colourful introduction explains the development of motor coach design and the main coach manufacturers, models and operators, offering a fascinating insight into the history of the nation's most popular vehicles.

Fuelling the Motoring Age - 100 Years of British Petrol Stations (Paperback): Nick Evans Fuelling the Motoring Age - 100 Years of British Petrol Stations (Paperback)
Nick Evans
R323 Discovery Miles 3 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Petrol stations have been with us for 100 years. They have been built on countless rural and industrial landscapes, often becoming a linchpin of the communities they serve. Men and women in slightly oily overalls would fill up your car's tank, wipe the windscreen and even check the oil for you. Football coins, Green Shield Stamps, soup bowls or wine glasses might be handed over to keep your custom - all in the days when a single GBP1 note was enough to buy hundreds of miles of happy motoring. This vivid, illustrated history takes the reader on a journey from collecting a tin can at the local ironmonger's to filling up on the forecourt, and on to the possibility of not using petrol at all.

Dangerous Goods - A Guide to Exemptions from the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations (Paperback): Roger Wrapson Dangerous Goods - A Guide to Exemptions from the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations (Paperback)
Roger Wrapson
R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most transport operators have little experience of the regulations surrounding the carriage of dangerous goods. The smaller operator in particular will have no point of reference to refer to in order to find out if they are legally allowed to carry dangerous goods without application of all the requirements, including the costly training of drivers. This book enables the operator to quickly and easily identify the regulatory exemptions that apply to the listed UN numbers which identify dangerous goods. The operator is able to obtain confirmation on their ability to legally carry dangerous goods within the limitations of a transport operation and does not need to seek specialist knowledge or training. It lists the UN numbers and the exemptions that apply in an easy reference format and also provides information on how to use the data within the regulatory framework.

Road Transport And Health (Paperback): BMA Road Transp Road Transport And Health (Paperback)
BMA Road Transp
R1,116 Discovery Miles 11 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transport affects everyone--it enables access to social activities, employment, leisure, goods and services. But with traffic levels estimated to nearly double by the year 2025, there is cause for concern. Strategies to reduce the harmful effects of motor vehicles such as emission controls are welcome, but are likely to be outweighed by the projected increases in motor traffic over the next 25 years.

Without a fundamental shift in policy away from the care to other forms of transport, it is inevitable that the transport sector will continue to impose large and growing costs on human health and the environment.

This BMA report serves to highlight the many ways in which transport policy affects health, considering not the more obvious effects such as accidents and pollution but also other consequences of transport policy such as the decline of public transport services, particularly in rural areas, the lowering of the quality of life of inner-city residents and the associated lack of physical activity leading to unhealthy lifestyles.

As well as making recommendations and suggesting some possible solutions, this report aims to promote a broader debate of transport policy and health, which will highlight to the medical profession, public and government the many adverse effects that certain transport policies may have on our health and environment.

This report will be of interest to all member of the public and is essential reading for students, policy makers, town planners, environmental health experts, doctors and other health care professionals.

Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Roger Thompson, Rodrigo Peroni, Alex Visser Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Roger Thompson, Rodrigo Peroni, Alex Visser
R5,145 Discovery Miles 51 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mining haul roads are a critical component of surface mining infrastructure and the performance of these roads has a direct impact on operational efficiency, costs and safety. A significant proportion of a mine's cost is associated with material haulage and well-designed and managed roads contribute directly to reductions in cycle times, fuel burn, tyre costs and overall cost per tonne hauled and critically, underpin a safe transport system. The first comprehensive treatise on mining haul road design, construction, operation and management, Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice presents an authoritative compendium of worldwide experience and state-of-the-art practices developed and applied over the last 25 years by the three authors, over three continents and many of the world's leading surface mining operations. In this book, the authors: Introduce the four design components of an integrated design methodology for mining haul roads - geometric (including drainage), structural, functional and maintenance management Illustrate how mine planning constraints inform road design requirements Develop the analytical framework for each of the design components from their theoretical basis, and using typical mine-site applications, illustrate how site-specific design guidelines are developed, together with their practical implementation Summarise the key road safety and geometric design considerations specific to mining haul roads Specify the mechanistic structural design approach unique to ultra-heavy wheel loading associated with OTR mine trucks Describe the selection, application and management of the road wearing course material, together with its rehabilitation, including the use of palliatives Develop road and operating cost models for estimating total road-user costs, based on road rolling resistance measurement and modelling techniques Illustrate the approach of costing a mining road construction project based on the design methodologies previously introduced List and describe future trends in mine haulage system development, how mining haul road design will evolve to meet these new system challenges and how the increasing availability of data is used to manage road performance and ultimately provide 24x7 trafficability. Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice is a complete practical reference for mining operations, contractors and mine planners alike, as well as civil engineering practitioners and consulting engineers. It will also be invaluable in other fields of transportation infrastructure provision and for those seeking to learn and apply the state-of-the-art in mining haul roads. "This book is the most definitive treatise on mining haul roads ever written [...] There has never been a text that addresses the many facets of mining haul roads on such a scope [...]" From the Foreword by Jim Humphrey, Professional Engineer, Autonomous haulage systems developer and Distinguished Member of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration.

Trade and transport corridor management toolkit - connecting smallholders to knowledge, networks, and institutions (Paperback):... Trade and transport corridor management toolkit - connecting smallholders to knowledge, networks, and institutions (Paperback)
Charles Kunaka, World Bank, Robin Carruthers
R1,144 Discovery Miles 11 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Trade and transport corridors - major routes that facilitate the movement of people and goods between regions and between countries - have existed for millennia. They enable regions and countries to offer high-capacity transport systems and services that reduce trade and transport costs by creating economies of scale. Regional corridors are particularly important to landlocked countries, often providing the only overland routes to regional and international markets. Despite a long and complex history, guidance is often lacking on how to design, determine the components to include, and analyse the impact of corridor projects. The Trade and Transport Corridor Management Toolkit fills this void. The Toolkit synthesizes the experiences of the World Bank and other development agencies in assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating the impact of trade and transport corridor projects. It saves project developers the task of looking for the best available tools and ensures greater consistency to facilitate comparison and benchmarking. The Toolkit will also be of immense value to policy makers in provincial and national governments as well as regional economic institutions, for several reasons: Corridors affect the space economy of countries; they are best developed with clear estimates of the spatial impacts that can be expected. A corridor system has multiple components, including infrastructure (roads, railways, ports), transport and logistics services, and regulations; it is important to appreciate the linkages between them, particularly as the overall performance of a corridor is determined by the weakest component. Many parties with varying interests and motivations have a stake in corridor development. The Toolkit argues for their full participation in corridor development processes and operations. The best functioning modern corridors in the world did not happen by accident; they are often the results of coordinated development and cooperation over many years. The general principles outlined in this Toolkit should help project teams, government officials, logistics service providers, and the trade community to better appreciate both the importance of good corridor project design and the challenges of, and possibilities from, improving corridor performance.

Cherise Ryers
R5,024 R4,198 Discovery Miles 41 980 Save R826 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The objective of this book is to examine the efficacy of the new restart rule promulgated as part of the Hours of Service of Drivers Final Rule. Under the new restart rule, if commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers choose to use a provision allowing "restart" of the 60- or 70-hour duty-cycle limit, they are required to include at least two night-time periods (from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., based on the home terminal time zone if the restart takes place in a time zone that differs from the driver's home terminal) in their restart breaks to allow sufficient opportunity for sleep recuperation before beginning another duty cycle. To investigate the efficacy of this new rule, a naturalistic field study was conducted (before the compliance date) to assess fatigue in drivers working their normal schedules and performing their normal duties. During this study, researchers performed a comparison of driver fatigue between duty cycles preceded by a restart break with only one night-time period versus duty cycles preceded by a restart break with two or more night-time periods. This book discusses the findings of this study.

R3,629 Discovery Miles 36 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Advanced Seat Suspension Control System Design for Heavy Duty Vehicles provides systematic knowledge of the advanced seat suspension design and control for heavy duty vehicles. Nowadays, people are paying more and more attention to ride comfort and the health of drivers and passengers. This is especially for heavy duty vehicles, where drivers/operators are exposed to much severer vibrations than those in passenger vehicles due to a harsh working environment, operating conditions, and long hour driving, etc. Seat suspension systems can effectively help to suppress the high magnitude vibration transmitted to drivers with relatively simple structure and low cost, and hence are widely adopted in heavy duty vehicles. This book helps researchers and engineers to have a comprehensive understanding of the seat suspension system and to conduct in-depth studies on seat suspension design and control; this book covers a wide range of perspectives about seat suspension design and control methods.

On the Move.... - Market for Mobility on the Roads (Paperback): John Hibbs On the Move.... - Market for Mobility on the Roads (Paperback)
John Hibbs
R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Hobart Paper addresses one of the great economic and social problems of our time: the suboptimal allocation of resources that has arisen from the incompatible financial, fiscal and regulatory regimes for the various modes of inland transport. In order to simplify the argument, it concentrates on the movement of people, whose demand for access to satisfactions gives rise to the derived demand for mobility with with the paper is concerned. The argument rests on the assumption that such satisfactions can only be assessed subjectively and that there is no planning technique which will ensure the provision of the required mobility at a quality and price that will clear the market. Having reviewed the various 'means to mobility', the paper concludes that measures to harmonise their investment, taxation and regulatory regimes so as to create an integrated market form the basis for the only 'national transport policy' that can have either meaning or success.

A Practical Guide to Concrete Pavement Technology for Developing Countries (Paperback): Asian Development Bank A Practical Guide to Concrete Pavement Technology for Developing Countries (Paperback)
Asian Development Bank
R851 Discovery Miles 8 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This practical and comprehensive guide sets out key considerations in using concrete pavement for roads. Many countries are exploring the use of concrete to improve the durability and reliability of their road networks. However, many developers, agencies, and companies in the construction industry do not yet have sufficient experience in the use of concrete pavement. This can lead to poorly planned, supervised, or executed infrastructure that requires premature and costly repairs or maintenance. This guide explains the key issues to consider and how to avoid potential risks when planning and constructing concrete pavement.
