Fundamentals of Transportation and Traffic Operations (Hardcover): Carlos F. Daganzo Fundamentals of Transportation and Traffic Operations (Hardcover)
Carlos F. Daganzo
R3,095 Discovery Miles 30 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hardbound. The basic concepts in the transportation and traffic operations field that should be understood by every transportation professional are presented here in a thorough, coherent, and self-contained way. Introductory chapters on tools cover topics such as graphical methods, optimization, probability, stochastic processes, statistics and simulation; these are complemented by application chapters on traffic dynamics, control, observation, and scheduled modes, where the fundamental ideas are presented in depth.A key element of the author's approach is that only that material is presented which is definitely known and correct. At the same time, an effort has been made to point out various pitfalls and common errors so that they can be avoided. The result is an invaluable source of reliable, well grounded and clearly explained ideas, tools and techniques for the transportation professional.

The Importance of Small Differences - European Integration and Road Haulage Associations in Germany and the Netherlands... The Importance of Small Differences - European Integration and Road Haulage Associations in Germany and the Netherlands (Paperback)
Dirk Lehmkuhl
R439 Discovery Miles 4 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book raises the question of how European integration influences interest groups' activities in Germany and the Netherlands. Theoretically, the study links up with the renewed interest in international sources of domestic politics and combines different fields, such as organisational analysis and institutionalist approaches, international relations theory and sectoral economic governance. Empirically, the book offers a detailed analysis of the road haulage sector; a sector of high strategic and symbolic importance for economic internationalisation which has only recently become the subject of Europeanisation. A comparative research design helps to grasp the differential consequences that European integration generates in the two countries. With a focus on the micropolitics of asscociations the study reveals how the internal mechanisms of associations led to different patterns of adjustment to the Europeanised political and economic environment in Germany and the Netherlands. The importance of these different patterns of adjustment lies in the influence they have on the nature of public-private interactions in the sector. Hence, the study not only provides empirical results on the differential impact of European integration, but also on its consequences for domestic (and European) politics and policies.

Many Americans spend frustrating hours each year stuck in congested traffic, a situation that costs the country billions of dollars annually and influences people's decisions about where to live and work. As traffic has risen dramatically over the past 3 decades with population and economic growth, congestion now extends to more times of the day, more roads, and more cities and towns--thus affecting more people than ever before. Estimates of the cost of congestion vary; according to the Department of Transportation (DOT), congestion costs America an estimated $200 billion each year in lost travel time and fuel, and drivers in metropolitan areas spent more than one-quarter of their total travel time in congested conditions. This book examines current issues, impacts and project reviews relating to traffic congestion and road pricing.

R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

TransCanada (a Canadian company) applied to the U.S. Department of State for a permit to cross the U.S.-Canada International border with the Keystone XL pipeline project in 2008. If constructed, the pipeline would carry crude oil produced from the oil sands regions of Alberta, Canada, to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. Because the pipeline would connect the United States with a foreign country, it requires a Presidential Permit issued by the State Department. Issuance of a Presidential Permit requires a finding that the project would serve the "national interest." This book describes the Keystone XL pipeline proposal and the process required for federal approval. It summarises key arguments for and against the pipeline put forth by the pipeline's developers, federal agencies, environmental groups, and other stakeholders. Also discussed is the constitutional basis for the State Department's authority to issue a Presidential Permit, and opponents' possible challenges to this authority.

Truck Drivers & Fatigue - Efficacy Studies of the Restart Rules (Hardcover): Cherise Ryers Truck Drivers & Fatigue - Efficacy Studies of the Restart Rules (Hardcover)
Cherise Ryers
R5,126 R4,282 Discovery Miles 42 820 Save R844 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The objective of this book is to examine the efficacy of the new restart rule promulgated as part of the Hours of Service of Drivers Final Rule. Under the new restart rule, if commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers choose to use a provision allowing "restart" of the 60- or 70-hour duty-cycle limit, they are required to include at least two night-time periods (from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., based on the home terminal time zone if the restart takes place in a time zone that differs from the driver's home terminal) in their restart breaks to allow sufficient opportunity for sleep recuperation before beginning another duty cycle. To investigate the efficacy of this new rule, a naturalistic field study was conducted (before the compliance date) to assess fatigue in drivers working their normal schedules and performing their normal duties. During this study, researchers performed a comparison of driver fatigue between duty cycles preceded by a restart break with only one night-time period versus duty cycles preceded by a restart break with two or more night-time periods. This book discusses the findings of this study.
