This book graphically demonstrates that Our Lady of Fatima's message is not just for pious Christians: it is addressed with compelling earnestness to every man, woman and child in the world. To all, she holds out the power, through the practice of her message, to bring down similar miracles of God's grace into their homes, their towns, their countries, and disperse once and for all the threatened nightmare of worldwide Communism and nuclear war - the specter of the entire caravan of mankind sliding into the abyss. "Fatima: The Great Sign" is, however more than a reiteration of the appealing message given by God through His Mother to our sin-laden twenty-first century. In addition to presenting a thoroughly up-to-date account of the Fatima apparitions of 1916-1929 and the subsequent development of the devotions based on Our Lady's message, the book penetrates deeply into the theology of Fatima, especially that concerning devotion and reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (which Fatima inculcates), and draws upon a wealth of supporting material from the most eminent authorities in the Church which hitherto remained largely unknown. In these critical times, no one can afford to ignore the Fatima message. After reading this book, certainly no informed Catholic should have any reason for doing so.

American Catholic - The Politics of Faith During the Cold War (Hardcover): D. G. Hart American Catholic - The Politics of Faith During the Cold War (Hardcover)
D. G. Hart
R596 R472 Discovery Miles 4 720 Save R124 (21%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

American Catholic places the rise of the United States' political conservatism in the context of ferment within the Roman Catholic Church. How did Roman Catholics shift from being perceived as un-American to emerging as the most vocal defenders of the United States as the standard bearer in world history for political liberty and economic prosperity? D. G. Hart charts the development of the complex relationship between Roman Catholicism and American conservatism, and shows how these two seemingly antagonistic ideological groups became intertwined in advancing a certain brand of domestic and international politics. Contrary to the standard narrative, Roman Catholics were some of the most assertive political conservatives directly after World War II, and their brand of politics became one of the most influential means by which Roman Catholicism came to terms with American secular society. It did so precisely as bishops determined the church needed to update its teaching about its place in the modern world. Catholics grappled with political conservatism long before the supposed rightward turn at the time of the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Hart follows the course of political conservatism from John F. Kennedy, the first and only Roman Catholic president of the United States, to George W. Bush, and describes the evolution of the church and its influence on American politics. By tracing the roots of Roman Catholic politicism in American culture, Hart argues that Roman Catholicism's adaptation to the modern world, whether in the United States or worldwide, was as remarkable as its achievement remains uncertain. In the case of Roman Catholicism, the effects of religion on American politics and political conservatism are indisputable.

By any reckoning, the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI was extraordinary, with moments of high drama. Not the least of these was his resignation from office in February 2013, the first papal resignation in 500 years. But who is Joseph Ratzinger? In this definitive biography, based on meticulous historical research and many hours of taped interviews with his subject, Peter Seewald shows the exceptional circumstances in which the exceptionally talented son of a Bavarian policeman became the first German pope for 950 years. In this first volume, covering the years 1927-1965, we witness Joseph Ratzinger's early days, living above his father's police station. Ratzinger came to adulthood through the years of National Socialism. Though hostile to the rise of Hitler, his family knew well about Dachau and Ratzinger himself was conscripted into the Hitler Youth. Joseph Ratzinger proved to be a man of exceptional intellectual gifts and by the time of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) he was already noted as one of the outstanding intellects present and was nominated a 'peritus' or theological expert. This was also the time of the start of his friendship with the Swiss theologian Hans Kung who was to become his nemesis. Of his predecessor, Pope Francis has said: 'Pope Benedict was a great Pope, great for the penetration of his intelligence, great for his important contribution to theology, great for his love of the Church and human beings, great for his virtues and faith'. Even in this first volume, we begin to understand how this came to be true.

Jason Evert; Foreword by Christopher West

From Genesis we know that God created men and women in His image and likeness, and from the first letter of John that "God is love." Therefore men and women are made in the image and likeness of Love. This isn't hard to see. Look at the design of the male and female bodies. They are made for each other. In fact, neither makes complete sense apart from the other. The man's body is made for a woman's body - made to be a life-giving gift to her; her body reveals his calling - and vice versa. In this book - which utilizes a dynamic, "flip" book design to be "two books in one" well-known chastity speaker and author Jason Evert unpacks the mystery of what is means to be male and female in light of the Theology of the Body in a language teenagers understand. Teens will learn about the profound realities to which their bodies point - and how to live chastely and lovingly towards those of the opposite sex.

Francis Tregian owned estates in Cornwall, and held a high place in court at the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I. He made no secret of his Catholic faith. Banished from court on trumped-up charges, he was arrested for hiding a priest, St Cuthbert Mayne, and imprisoned for 30 years. Released under James I, he died in a Jesuit hospital at St Roque, Lisbon, Portugal, and was buried standing up because he had stood up' to Elizabeth and her heresies. Francis Tregian is much revered on the Continent, where there have been recent attempts to have him elevated to sainthood. At his place of burial there is a detailed description of how he preferred the confiscation of his estates for the defence of the Catholic Faith. This booklet details the history of Francis Tregian, and includes all known details, including Tregian' Elizabethan music. Includes a Prayer for the Beatification of Francis Tregian as authorised by the Right Reverend Christopher Budd, Bishop of Portsmouth.

The Rhetoric of St. Augustine of Hippo is the definitive edition of St. Augustine's fourth book of De Doctrina Christiana , the book that deals with rhetoric and its uses in Christian discourse. The edition of DDC contains both the original Latin and Sister TArAse Sullivan's brilliant translation. An introduction discusses the historical importance of DDC . Seven seminal essays written during the last seventy-five years provide representative discussions of the important topics of DDC . The volume includes a detailed, synoptic outline of all four books, with a conclusion by Amy K. Hermanson that synthesizes Augustine's rhetorical theory in a religious context. This is the only edition of its kind. It will remain the standard for a long time to come.

The Cambridge Companion to the Summa Theologiae (Paperback): Philip McCosker, Denys Turner The Cambridge Companion to the Summa Theologiae (Paperback)
Philip McCosker, Denys Turner
R704 Discovery Miles 7 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arguably the most influential work of systematic theology in the history of Christianity, Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae has shaped all subsequent theology since it was written in the late thirteenth century. This Companion features essays from both specialists in Aquinas' thought and from constructive contemporary theologians to demonstrate how to read the text effectively and how to relate it to past and current theological questions. The authors thoroughly examine individual topics addressed in the Summa, such as God, the Trinity, eternity, providence, virtue, grace, and the sacraments, making the text accessible to students of all levels. They further discuss the contextual, methodological, and structural issues surrounding the Summa, as well as its interaction with a variety of religious traditions. This volume will not only allow readers to develop a comprehensive multi-perspectival understanding of Aquinas' main mature theological work, but also promote dialogue about the vital role of the Summa in theology today.
