In Unlocking the Power of Academic Vocabulary, Dr. Yu Ren Dong, an
associate professor of English education at Queens College, City
University of New York, helps secondary teachers expand their
instructional repertoire to teach academic vocabulary in a
systematic, meaningful, contextualized, and exciting way. Every
secondary, subject-matter teacher will find strategies,
easy-to-integrate activities, and tips on selecting words and
planning lessons. As you teach with these strategies, your English
language learners will be able to: tap into prior knowledge through
cross-language transfer and cross-cultural comparisons; use
concept-based vocabulary, such as analogies, metaphorical language,
themes, sources, inquiry, and graphic organizers; interact with new
words in context to decipher euphemisms, words with multiple
meanings, connotation, and context clues; engage in interactive
read-alouds, think-alouds, and wordplay; and master vocabulary
through writing. Charts, student examples, suggested resources, and
subject-matter vocabulary lists give teachers the hands-on tools
they need to teach the concepts behind words as well as the actual
definitions, spelling, and sounds. Transform your academic
vocabulary instruction into an engaging, skill-building mix that
carries over into students reading, writing, thinking, and
conversations in all subject areas."

A guided approach to using college writing for everyone's learning
Faculty in every discipline are increasingly pressured to include
major writing components as part of their courses. Unfortunately,
as author and English professor Gary R. Hafer explains, college and
university educators often have little training in the use of
writing in the classroom. Embracing Writing elucidates the
principles of academic writing and shows instructors how to
integrate writing with course content, blending them to enhance and
deepen the higher education learning process. Scholarly writing is
a central part of the academic experience and, when used
effectively, can be an outstanding pedagogical tool. The creative
approach in Embracing Writing will have you looking at writing in a
whole new way. Not only will your students appreciate the honest,
nurturing, and fun writing assignments, but your own writing will
improve as well. This is not a rulebook for writers, but a guided
approach to viewing writing and content as one indivisible whole.
Embracing Writing will help you: * Engage students in writing
assignments that actually help them develop their writing ability *
Understand what makes good collegiate writing and how it can aid in
content discovery * Discover new pathways for your own writing so
writing for publication and the classroom is enjoyable again *
Develop a writing pedagogy that doesn't detract from core course
content delivery There often is a disconnect between administrative
demands for in-course writing and the inadequate training resources
available to faculty members. Because most of us aren't trained as
writers, we need a meaningful way to connect writing to our areas
of expertise. Embracing Writing provides that connection.

A study of successful reading instruction. The articles cover
topics such as the use of computer technology for reading
instruction, and engagement and motivation in reading instruction.
They are divided into two sections: Reading Research and Assessment
and Reading Instruction and Practice.
The past decade saw heightened policy activism in the field of
reading at both the federal level and across virtually all 50
states. Initially sparked by disagreements about methods for
teaching children to read, the so-called "reading wars" stirred
heated debates on a variety of issues: levels and trends of reading
achievement, pedagogy, standards and assessment, and education
equity, among others. Embedded within these debates were the
political agendas of state executives and legislatures, the
interests of advocacy groups, and the ideologies of reading
professionals, which were collectively shaping state reading policy
development. Drawing primarily on interviews with 366 policy actors
from nine states, this book presents a comprehensive investigation
of the state reading policy domain employing multiple theoretical
frameworks and research methods. Using social network analysis, the
authors examined the interplay among a plethora of policy actors
embedded in reading policy networks. They explored in depth policy
actors' divergent beliefs on key reading-related issues, the causal
stories told, and the policy solutions proposed. In addition, they
examined the variety of lobbying tactics that interest groups
utilized to gain influence over the policymaking process and to
advance their policy agenda. As the most significant research
endeavor in the area of state reading policy to date, this
cross-state comparative study sheds light on the multifaceted
nature and the intricacies of the policy processes in reading, and
in education in general. The findings of this study bear important
implications for both policy actors and education professionals.
This study also makes a substantial contribution to policy research
in education by demonstrating how theoretical frameworks and
analytic methods that have not been fully utilized in education
could serve as powerful tools for exploring educational policy
processes.
