From the critically acclaimed author of Amina's Voice comes the
first book in an exciting new middle grade series about a
fourth-grader with big dreams of basketball stardom. Fourth grader
Zayd Saleem has some serious hoop dreams. He's not just going to be
a professional basketball player. He's going to be a star. A
legend. The first Pakistani-American kid to make it to the NBA. He
knows this deep in his soul. It's his destiny. There are only a few
small things in his way. For starters, Zayd's only on the D-team.
(D stands for developmental, but to Zayd it's always felt like a
bad grade or something.) Not to mention, he's a bit on the scrawny
side, even for the fourth grade team. But his best friend Adam is
on the Gold Team, and it's Zayd's dream for the two of them to play
together. His mom and dad don't get it. They want him to practice
his violin way more than his jump shot. When he gets caught blowing
off his violin lessons to practice, Zayd's parents lay down the
ultimate punishment: he has to hang up his high tops and isn't
allowed to play basketball anymore. As tryouts for the Gold Team
approach, Zayd has to find the courage to stand up for himself and
chase his dream.
Frank Merriwell was the fictional creation of Gilbert Patten, who
wrote under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish. The model for all later
American juvenile sports fiction, Merriwell excelled at football,
baseball, crew, and track at Yale while solving mysteries and
righting wrongs. He played with great strength and received
traumatic blows without injury.
A biographical entry on Patten noted that Frank Merriwell "had
little in common with his creator or his readers." Patten offered
some background on his character: "The name was symbolic of the
chief characteristics I desired my hero to have. Frank for
frankness, merry for a happy disposition, well for health and
abounding vitality."
Merriwell's classmates observed, "He never drinks. That's how he
keeps himself in such fine condition all the time. He will not
smoke, either, and he takes his exercise regularly. He is really a
remarkable freshie."
Merriwell originally appeared in a series of magazine stories
starting April 18, 1896 ("Frank Merriwell: or, First Days at
Fardale") in Tip Top Weekly, continuing through 1912, and later in
dime novels and comic books. Patten would confine himself to a
hotel room for a week to write an entire story.

It's the proudest moment of Jack's life - his debut as a
professional footballer. Now he has a chance to achieve his dream
of playing for his country. But it's 1914 and the world is at war.
Talk of sportsmen's cowardice leads to the formation of a
Footballers' Battalion and Jack has little choice but to join up.
The promise of a Cup in Flanders offers a glimmer of hope, but Jack
and his teammates will have to survive a waking nightmare if they
are ever to play again. A stunning new edition of Tom Palmer's
bestselling novel based on the true story of WWI war hero and
footballing legend Jack Cock.
Donte wishes he were invisible. As one of the few black boys at
Middlefield Prep, he feels as if he is constantly swimming in
whiteness. Most of the students don't look like him. They don't
like him either. Dubbed the "Black Brother," Donte's teachers and
classmates make it clear they wish he were more like his lighter
skinned brother, Trey. Quiet, obedient. When an incident with
"King" Alan leads to Donte's arrest and suspension, he knows the
only way to get even is to beat the king of the school at his own
game: fencing. With the help of a former Olympic fencer, Donte
embarks on a journey to carve out a spot on Middlefield Prep's
fencing team and maybe learn something about himself along the way.

New York Times bestselling author and former NFL defensive end Tim
Green delivers another baseball tale that will keep kids on the
edge of their seats. Perfect for fans of Mike Lupica or Dan
Gutman's Baseball Card Adventure series.Tommy's the new kid in
town, like he's been so many times before. Now he goes by the name
Brock, and he's having a hard time fitting in, especially when his
new friend is the bully from the wrong side of the tracks. Thanks
to a prank gone wrong, the baseball coach notices Brock and offers

himself on and off the field before he becomes a new kid...again?
Like lightning/you strike/fast and free/legs zoom/down field/eyes
fixed/on the checkered ball/on the goal/ten yards to go/can't
nobody stop you/can't nobody cop you... Twelve-year-old Nick is a
football-mad boy who absolutely hates books. In this graphic novel
adaptation of the acclaimed verse novel, football, family, love,
and friendship take centre stage as Nick tries to figure out how to
navigate his parents' break-up, stand up to bullies, and impress
the girl of his dreams. These challenges - which seem even harder
than scoring a tie-breaking, game-winning goal - change his life,
as well as his best friend's.
Duma is at a cross roads in life. Living in an informal settlement
in Soweto with his father and young sister, Duma is expected to
make a contribution to the household since he does not work. The
easy way has been to steal electricity cables. But when his friend
gets caught, Duma decides to try a new way of life. The road to a
new beginning does not come easy as he goes back to the canoe club
at Power Park and he quickly learns that paddling a canoe is not as
easy as he remembered. He finds himself drawn to the water and is
inspired by Steve an experienced paddler who is determined and
pushes himself but lately the gold has been out of reach. Duma goes
out on a limb and asks Steve if they can train together for the
Dusi. Will Duma and Steve's partnership in the water work out? This
is an inspirational story of two men from different backgrounds,
coming together to tell their story.
From U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera comes the powerful
journey of Chicano teen Lucky Z. A former skateboarder who's
anything but lucky, he finds triumph and power through his voice.

the extraordinary in the ordinary, to raise their voice and find
strength in the sheer and simple power of expression. Lucky Z has
always lived on the edge-he loved to skateboard, to drag race, to
feel alive. But things have taken a turn-he's living with new
foster parents and a tragic past. An accident changed everything.
And only his voice will set him free. As you feel Lucky breathe in
life again, you will want to shout out with him.
