For the first time in paperback, a photographic history of
civilization, as seen through the world's most deadly and
fascinating firearms. The Illustrated History of Guns is a
comprehensive look at the tools of battle. To craft this book, more
than five hundred photographs of genuine specimens were specially
commissioned from the six-thousand-piece collection of the Berman
Museum of World History. The weapons featured span a period of
close to four thousand years, ranging from Ancient Greece to World
War II, and from the Crusades in Europe to the US Civil War. It
features a wide array of diverse treasures, including the traveling
pistols of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, a royal Persian
scimitar with 1,295 rose-cut diamonds and rubies, and a single
11-carat emerald set in gold, first owned by Shah Abbas I of Persia
and given in tribute to Catherine the Great. The Illustrated
History of Guns also offers information on weapons innovators,
including Alexander Forsyth, Eliphalet Remington, Samuel Colt,
Sergei Mosin, the Mauser brothers, Hiram Maxim, John Browning,
Richard Gatling, John T. Thompson, John Garland, Feodor Tokarev,
Oliver Winchester, and Mikhail Kalashnikov. With unparalleled
historical perspective and background on persons significant to the
development and advancements of weapons technology or military
strategy, The Illustrated History of Guns belongs on the shelf of
every history buff and firearms enthusiast.

2012 Reprint of 1955 Edition. Profusely illustrated. Exact
facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical
Recognition Software. Keith was born in Missouri in 1899. His
family moved to Montana six years later, where he grew up around
former outlaws, lawmen, buffalo hunters, and Indian fighters as his
life spanned the time from the Civil War veterans and gunfighters
of the Frontier to the more modern age of hand guns. His teachers
had survived the bloodiest war in our nation's history and had seen
the great herds of buffaloes and the cow towns that helped build
the West. Keith's writings had great influence on firearms in
general and especially on single action six guns. Keith's knowledge
of every facet of handguns in general and six shooters in
particular is truly remarkable. He covers it all, from history to
game shooting to gun fighting and much more. Although this book was
written before the advent of the .44 Magnum, Mr. Keith's knowledge
and experience are invaluable, with his game shooting and long
range abilities most impressive of all. Keith also covers slip
shooting with the Colt SAA, a fascinating and surprisingly
effective technique generally ignored by modern writers. But most
importantly, Elmer's honesty and integrity are his greatest
attributes to those who knew him. If you love good old six
shooters, you must have this book. This title remains an important
and classic work on the subject. Table of contents: Dedication

Illustrated with over 100 photos and drawings. Roy F. Dunlap's book
is self-described as "a manual of firearms design, construction,
alteration and remodeling for amateur and professional gunsmiths
and users of modern firearms." What makes Dunlap's book important
is its specificity. For example, instead of merely bringing up the
need for a bench grinder, he cites why a 1/4- o r 1/3-horsepower,
double-shaft model, turning at 1,750 rpm with a wire-brush wheel on
one side and a medium-coarse wheel on the other is the best choice.
He supports his recommendation by explaining why you'll find wider
use for a medium coarse than a finer stone. His chapter entitled
"Helpful Gunsmith Knowledge," is absolutely crammed with bits of
information, and includes tips that he evidently could find no
other place for in his book. In the midst of a general discussion
on disassembly, for instance, Dunlap digresses to describe in
detail a L-shaped tool he made to simplify reassembly of an L.C.
Smith double and how to use it. All in all, Dunlap covers soldering
and brazing; welding; heat treatment of metals; making and fitting
sights and accessories; making, fitting and heat treatment of
parts; cartridge information useful to gunsmiths; rifle barrels;
chamber and barrel work; rifle-action work; pistol and revolver
work; shotgun work; twenty two rim fire arms; browning, blueing and
blacking of metal; fitting commercial metallic sights; mounting
telescopic sights; wood for gun stocks; design of gun stocks; stock
making; checkering; stock repair and alteration; stock finishing;
styling the custom rifle; custom metal work; ornamentation of wood
and metal; target rifles; the Garand rifle; testing facilities and
apparatus; synthetic bedding; cartridge and chamber drawings; and
data sheets. A classic work, profusely illustrated.

Acquiring the ability to shoot accurately is no simple matter. One
should not assume that the art of advanced marksmanship is fully
realized upon reading a training manual. It cannot be complete
understood even after hours of advice and instruction from a
qualified marksmanship coach or target shooter. To become a
qualified shooter and be able to produce consistently high scores,
one must learn to perform all the fundamentals of shooting, acquire
certain definite habits, flawless coordination - and above all -
have a capacity for the intense concentration essential to
exercising a high degree of mental control. For this, one must
train. It is difficult, if not impossible, to establish a universal
system of training in marksmanship which will cover all cases, that
is, one that can be adapted to every shooter s technique or special
need. Training shooters requires an individual approach. For this
reason, knowledgeable coaches take the peculiarities of an
individual - such as experience, degree of preparation and physical
fitness - and other factors into account. Relying on their own
experience, they devise a training program which allows special
considerations for each shooter s capabilities. In spite of the
difference in details, technique or method, there is much that is
common to the training of advanced marksmen. This manual endeavors
to present, in a detailed, comprehensive manner, these universal
applications. Advanced marksmanship training must of necessity,
avoid the involved and exceedingly complex because it is an
activity whose participants form a great cross-section of our
national life, and the average citizen is its greatest asset.
AR-15 owners and shooters have reached the point where many don't
have just one. They've expanded their collections to include
specific rifles for competition, hunting, or focused interest in
defense. A competition shooter wants to know which details matter
and what parts must meet competition specifications. The hunter
wants to know how to customize the AR for his or her chosen quarry,
and what level of performance those parts can be expected to
deliver. The owner of an AR for defense wants to know the best
setup for that purpose, and which modifications are unnecessary or
even ill-advised. Fans of the original AR-15 are obsessive about
authentic parts and setup. This title delivers that level of
detail. The era of plain vanilla ARs is over. Performance ARs have
arrived, and this book provides the details you need to create your
own.

Ernest Hemingway's friend AE Hotchner once described a 'yellowed
four-by-five picture of Ernest', shown to him by Hemingway, 'aged
five or six, holding a small rifle. Written on the back in his
mother's hand was the notation, "Ernest was taught to shoot by Pa
when 2.5 years and when 4 could handle a pistol".' Firearms and
shooting infused Hemingway's existence and thus his writing. He was
a member of his high school gun club and went to war when he was
eighteen. he hunted elk, deer, and bears in the American West and
went on two extended African safaris, which figured hugely in his
writing and changed his life. To the day of his death, Hemingway
remained an avid hunter, first-class wingshot, and capable
rifleman. Following years of research from Sun Valley to Key West
and from Nairobi, Kenya, to Hemingway's home in Cuba, this volume
significantly expands what we know about Hemingway's shotguns,
rifles, and pistols - the tools of the trade that proved themselves
in his hunting, target shooting, and in his writing. Weapons are
some of our most culturally and emotionally potent artifacts. The
choice of gun can be as personal as the car one drives or the
person one marries - another expression of status, education,
experience, skill, and personal style. Including short excerpts
from Hemingway's works, these stories of his guns and rifles tell
us much about him as a lifelong expert hunter and shooters, and as
a man.
