Kimberly A Boynton
R1,515 Discovery Miles 15 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text responds to the growing need for speech-language pathologists in school settings by asking how factors including people, work, pay, opportunities for promotion, and supervision impact the overall job satisfaction of school-based speech-language pathologists. Drawing on data from a quantitative study conducted in schools in the US, the text foregrounds the experiences and perspectives of speech-language pathologists working in the public school sector, and illustrates the critical role of effective and supportive educational leadership and administration in ensuring effective recruitment, retention, and job satisfaction amongst these much needed professionals. The text highlights growing responsibilities of speech-language pathologists in schools and considers recruitment and challenges in the sector can be remedied by greater understanding of how job satisfaction relates to speech-language pathologists' experiences and perspectives on pay, work, opportunities for promotion, and support from a supervisor. This short text is aimed at researchers, scholars, and administrators in meeting the growing needs of children and students with speech and language difficulties in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary education settings . The text will be particularly valuable for school leaders looking to support speech-language pathologists in their setting.

Educational Conflict and the Law (1986) (Paperback): David Milman Educational Conflict and the Law (1986) (Paperback)
David Milman
R981 Discovery Miles 9 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published in 1986 this book considers how relationships within the education system are growing more complicated as staff, pupils and parents are increasingly aware of their legal rights and willing to assert them. It discusses possibilities for conflict such as growing teacher militancy and an emphasis on staff development and appraisal causing tension. The book also considers moves towards accountability and the increasing involvement of governors and teachers presenting further sources of conflict. Finally, it looks as truancy and other pupil difficulties involving legal issues. Teachers, headmasters, and other concerned parties are frequently unaware of the precise nature of their rights and responsibilities. However, underlying and regulating all educational activities is educational law as set out in various Acts of Parliament. This book provides a comprehensive overview of educational law from 1986 and discusses how it relates to controversies in education. It covers all aspects of the topic including the administrative arrangements, the independent sector, multiracial education and teachers' contractual obligations.

Teacher-Pupil Conflict in Secondary Schools (1987) (Paperback): Kate Cronk Teacher-Pupil Conflict in Secondary Schools (1987) (Paperback)
Kate Cronk
R712 Discovery Miles 7 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published in 1987, the central question with which this book is concerned is what can, and should, teachers do about teacher-pupil conflict in schools? Few teachers in secondary education would need to have this sort of conflict described as even if that have been fortunate enough to avoid it themselves they will know of it from staffroom discussion and from the media. In can be seen in disorderly classrooms where pupils 'mess about' and 'have a laugh', and in the bleak expression on the face of their teacher. Equally it can be detected in those classrooms where the teacher is in firm control, but where pupils gaze listlessly out of the window, or only minimally comply with work demands. It is characterized by sudden blazing temper on both sides, and also by long periods of weariness, boredom and disengagement. It is not that conflict which might arise from temporary private troubles, from having a bad day or going through a bad patch, for it is there week in week out, and involves significant numbers. Such conflict has been of interest to both psychologists and sociologists of education and important contributions have been offered by both of these disciplines. Sociologists have mapped out the differing cultural values and norms which appear to promote it. They have identified the social constraints present within the environment in which it is produced, constraints which emanate from the socio-economic organization of society and from the maintenance of an institutional framework, and which affect the micro-dynamics of teacher-pupil interaction. Psychologists have described the effects on behaviour of genetic factors, environmental conditions and cognitive states. Important though such insights are, however, they can only speak indirectly to teacher practice. This book provides an educational approach to the subject discussing topics including theoretical considerations, teacher-pupil discussion and relationships between classroom behaviour and the curriculum. It will appeal to those involved with schools and education, as well as psychologists, educational sociologists and researchers.

This collection unites expert scholars in a comprehensive survey of critical topics in bilingual deaf education. Essential for anyone looking to expand their understanding of bilingualism and deafness, this volume reflects Dr. Hoffmeister's impact on the field while demonstrating the ultimate resilience of human language and literacy systems.

Connections Between Neuroscience, Rhetoric, and Writing - A Plastic Pedagogy for the Digital Age (Paperback): Edward J Comstock Connections Between Neuroscience, Rhetoric, and Writing - A Plastic Pedagogy for the Digital Age (Paperback)
Edward J Comstock
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that contemporary neuroscience compliments, extends, and challenges recent and influential posthuman and new materialist accounts of the relations between rhetoric, affect, and writing pedagogy. Drawing on cutting-edge neuro-philosophy, Comstock re-thinks both historical and current relations between writing and power around questions of affect, attention, and plasticity. In considering the uses and limits of exciting new findings from the neurobiology, this volume both theorizes and offers pedagogical strategies for teaching writing in a digital age characterized by the erosion of wonder and pervasive disaffection. Ultimately, in response to recent critiques transcendental reason and subjectivity, and related calls for the increased inclusion of multi-modal and digital writing and rhetoric, Comstock argues for an embodied pedagogy that values the substantial relations between writing and pedagogical care.

Participatory Evaluation Up Close - An Integration of Research-Based Knowledge (Hardcover, New): J. Bradley Cousins, Jill Anne... Participatory Evaluation Up Close - An Integration of Research-Based Knowledge (Hardcover, New)
J. Bradley Cousins, Jill Anne Chouinard
R2,704 Discovery Miles 27 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domains of inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge base been infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fill this void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that is receiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework for participatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base in participatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodological considerations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn from their own research program. The book concludes in Part 4 with implications for moving the field forward in terms of important research questions, methodological direction and evaluation practice. This book will be of central interest to evaluation theorists and to those who choose to conduct research on evaluation; appeal will be conceptual and methodological. It will provide excellent supplementary reading for graduate students, many of whom seek to develop empirical studies on evaluation as part of their graduate programs. Rife with examples of participatory evaluation in practice, and practical implications, the book will also benefit evaluation practitioners with an interest in evaluation capacity building and participatory and collaborative approaches to practice.
