In Helping Parents of Diagnosed, Distressed, and Different
Children, Eric Maisel provides clinicians with the tools they need
to address the issues facing the parents of diagnosed children. In
these pages, mental health professionals will find tips for using
the right language to guide families through situations such as
sibling bullying and parental divorce, as well as guidelines for
thinking critically about children's mental health. Filled with
hands-on resources including checklists and questionnaires, this
valuable guide offers clinicians a set of strategies to help
parents deal effectively with their child's distress, regardless of
the source.
Sexuality Education for Students with Disabilities addresses the
natural process of maturation and sexual development for SWD. This
book presents a balance of theory, research, and practice that will
assist teachers, paraprofessionals, school administrators, school
counselors, and community service agency providers in understanding
the specific needs of SWD as they develop and the roles they should
play in teaching students about sexuality. SWD reach the same
physical milestones as students who do not have disabilities,
however, some disabling conditions can delay successful development
of healthy relationships that lead to mutually supportive sexual
relationships. Undergraduate students, graduate students, new and
seasoned teachers, school administrators, and social service
providers will benefit from this book. Readers who currently work
with SWD or will eventually work with SWD need the information in
this text to expand their understanding and strategies related to
sexuality instruction. Those who develop or implement
Individualized Educational Programs can use this text to support
goals, objectives, and activities that are found in the transition
plan. Those who work in postsecondary settings will find this
information helpful in supporting adolescents with disabilities who
are newly graduated from high school. Sexuality Education for
Students with Disabilities provides a review of the most recent
research and practice in sexuality instruction for SWD. It is a
comprehensive guide for the wide range of disabling conditions.
This is a different approach from other texts that focus
specifically on one or a few disabling conditions. This book comes
at a time in our culture when we more readily recognize the
pitfalls of inadequate sexuality instruction; namely, sexual
harassment and abuse. It is well-documented that people with
disabilities are disproportionally victims of sexual harassment and
abuse. SWD and young adults need teachers and community service
professionals who are knowledgeable and supportive to provide
instruction and feedback in this process. In addition to safety
issues, the goal of this text is to assist teachers and service
providers to help young people with disabilities to understand that
sexuality is pleasurable and important part of growing up.
This book examines the role that technologies play in the lives of
adults with learning disabilities. It analyses how design and
support practices can be used to support access to technology in
ways that can enhance opportunities and life experiences. Drawing
on international literature and the author's own research, the book
considers what we know about past and present practices of
supporting adults with learning disabilities to use technologies.
It outlines how support practices can offer opportunities to
overcome digital inequalities, offering a framework of core beliefs
and knowledge that can inform future initiatives. The book has a
particular focus on technologies, policies, practitioner
communities and the characteristics of support practice. It also
highlights the potential of people with learning disabilities, the
potential of technology and the potential of the environment to
support technology use. This important book will be highly relevant
reading for academics, researchers and post-graduate students in
the field of special educational needs and disabilities, digital
education and learning technologies, inclusive education and social
work.

There is so much to consider in any clinical consultation:
identifying the individual is the one you expected, who is with the
individual, which therapy intervention, resources, signposting,
referrals, being cued in to responses for contextual information,
evaluation and outcomes, planning next steps ... and this is all
before you throw 'virtual' in the mix! This clinical companion
presents 50 transferable, adaptable, practical and accessible
chapters for speech and language therapists and others working via
remote consultations. Divided into four sections, the book covers:
The remote practitioner. The remote rules. Creating a digital tool
kit. A remotely possible future. Aimed at students encountering
their first remote consultations, newly qualified clinicians with
limited practical experience of virtual clinics through to
clinicians who are experienced in their own specialities but now
need to transfer those skills to remote ways of delivery, this
concise text will provide confidence and guidance for the reader.
It will also prove useful to clinicians beyond speech and language
as many of the skills and practical advice and guidance are
applicable in specialities across a range of settings, both public
and private, healthcare and education.
Divided into two volumes, Handbook of Special Education Research
provides a comprehensive overview of critical issues in special
education research. This first volume addresses key topics in
theory, methods, and development, exploring how these three domains
interconnect to build effective special education research. Each
chapter features considerations for future research and
implications for fostering continuous improvement and innovation.
Essential reading for researchers and students of special
education, this handbook brings together diverse and complementary
perspectives to help move the field forward.

New technologies and ongoing developments in the fields of Virtual
reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence are changing
the ways in which we facilitate learning. Recognising the positive
role these technologies can play in the learning and progress of
students assessed as having special educational needs, this
practical guide explains the characteristics, benefits, risks and
potential applications of new technologies in the classroom. An
innovative and timely resource, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality
and Artificial Intelligence in Special Education offers a
background in the evidence-based theory and practice of using new
technologies in an educational context. Accessible and free of
complex jargon, chapters provide information on the development,
intended uses and most current terminology used in relation to
technologies, and explains how modern equipment, approaches and
possibilities can be used to promote improved communication skills,
independent learning and heightened self-esteem amongst students
diagnosed with SEND. Offering a wealth of practical tips,
downloadable resources and ideas for engaging with technology in
the classroom, the text will support teachers to ensure that
students can benefit from exciting technological advances and learn
to use them appropriately. Demystifying a complex and varied field,
this practical resource will inspire and inform teachers, SENCOs
and practitioners working with children and students with SEND as
they harness the use of technology in the classroom.

International Perspectives on Inclusion within Society and
Education explores how the theme of inclusion in education and
society plays out across different nations and cultures. Covering
topics like dual citizenship, political loyalty, and migration, it
includes important discussions around poverty, educational
disadvantage, youth radicalisation and inequality. With
perspectives from a wide range of countries, including the USA, UK,
Finland, Kosovo, Albania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, the
Czech Republic, Slovakia and India, this book explores how issues
of inclusion are often decided by a majority for the majority,
which can lead to included minorities feeling disadvantaged and
paradoxically excluded. While setting up a strong case for
inclusion in society and education, it considers factors such as
poverty and mental health both nationally and internationally and
evaluates the effectiveness of additional financial resources and
educational support in creating an inclusive world. This book will
be of great interest for academics, researchers, and post graduate
students in the fields of comparative education, inclusive
education, sociology, political sciences and social work.

This edited book is uniquely set in the context of Chinese
societies. It deals with the issues of inclusive education in a
Chinese context and examines inclusion from the experience of Hong
Kong schools. Like other countries, in Hong Kong, inclusive
education has been promoted through Integrated Education (IE) and
the Whole-School Approach (WSA). Recently, the government has
introduced the induction of Special Educational Needs Coordinator
(SENCO) in each Hong Kong school to help diverse students,
especially students with special educational needs (SEN) and to
develop inclusive teaching and learning practices. This book is one
of the first to examine the influence of contextual and Chinese
cultural factors in the field of inclusive education, in regard to
how schools support students with diverse learning needs and SEN.
It also offers an account of context-specific measures towards
promoting inclusive education. This book will help scholars and
school practitioners in Asia in particular and in the West, in
general, develop a comprehensive understanding of context-specific
inclusive practices in education for students with diverse learning
needs.
Foregrounding the perspectives of students from Barbados and St.
Vincent, this book offers valuable insight into the implementation
and effectiveness of international policies designed to improve
educational inclusion in the Caribbean. Drawing on pupil
participatory research conducted with adolescents in disadvantaged
and high-achieving schools, the text reveals differences in how
international policies are reflected in schools, highlighting the
role of student and school leadership, community building in and
outside of schools, and transformative teacher pedagogy in
achieving educational equity. Situating pupil participation and
student consultation in its theoretical and policy context in the
Caribbean, the author examines the findings on educational
inclusion and their implications for policy development in order to
propose a new model to boost pupil consultation and increase
academic inclusion and engagement. Juxtaposing students' voices
from a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic
backgrounds, Caribbean Student Voices and Educational Inclusion is
a great companion reader for educators, policymakers, and
researchers undertaking work on inclusive education in developed
and developing nations.
Get your kids moving and giggling with the delightful suggestions
in A Year of Mini-Moves for the In-Sync Child created by Carol
Kranowitz and Joye Newman. Here are fifty-two weekly schedules that
will incorporate quick movement activities into your day. These
whimsical digital pages can also be printed and posted to brighten
your walls at the clinic, at home and at school. Pediatricians,
teachers and other early childhood specialists now recognize that
early motor development is one of the most important factors in the
physical, emotional, academic and overall success of the child.
Each of these mini-moves addresses one or more sensory, perceptual
and visual motor skills that are the foundation of all future
physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Use these whimsical
mini-moves at the beginning of your day or therapy session, at
transition times or as inspiration for a more elaborate movement
experience. Adapt each move to suit the abilities of the children.
Issues of cultural identity and cultural heritage are at the heart
of contemporary discourses in many parts of the world. They are
used to identify and address the inequalities by marginalized
groups; however, they also feed the re-nationalization and
ethno-purist fantasies. But what exactly is culture? In this
volume, the authors explore how culture is conceptualized and
practised by young people in eight countries in numerous and very
diverse contexts - schools, interest clubs, organizations and
informal youth groups. The chapters show that concepts of culture
vary widely within and across sites, regions and countries,
highlighting the common, as well as particular, challenges that
notions of identity and heritage pose for young people who often
aspire to an inclusive and open society
Coping with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and ADHD: A Global Perspective
uniquely incorporates dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD into one
volume, offering practical advice on how to manage each of these
disorders. McBride combines a solid research base with interviews
with specialists in learning disabilities, as well as parents,
teachers, and students with personal knowledge of each difficulty
from six continents. The innovative cross-cultural focus of the
book is emphasized in the introduction, which is followed by one
chapter each on the basics of each of these learning difficulties
and another three chapters on their remediation. The book goes on
to cover topics such as comorbidities across learning or other
difficulties, learning of multiple languages, facilitating
self-esteem, and enhancing reading comprehension and writing
composition in the face of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD.
Appendices with short, practical tips on learning, multi-media
resources, and ways to test and train cognitive-linguistic skills
are included as an additional resource. Coping with Dyslexia,
Dysgraphia and ADHD: A Global Perspective is intended for
practitioners, teachers, parents, and those with any or all of
these learning difficulties. University or postgraduate students
who wish to understand more about dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or ADHD
will also benefit from the clear analysis. With this book, the
reader will not only come to understand the fundamental nature of
these learning difficulties, but will also get to know the people
whose lives are so deeply affected by them.
