Modeling of Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport in the Mekong Delta (Paperback): Quoc VO Thanh Modeling of Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport in the Mekong Delta (Paperback)
Quoc VO Thanh
R2,069 Discovery Miles 20 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This research aims to investigate the prevailing sediment dynamics and the sediment budget in the Mekong Delta by using a process-based model. Understanding sediment dynamics for the Mekong Delta requires high resolution analysis and detailed data, which is a challenge for managers and scientists. This study introduces such an approach and focuses on modeling the entire system with a process-based approach with Delft3D-4 and Delft3D Flexible Mesh (DFM). The first model is used to explore sediment dynamics at the coastal zone. The latter model allows straightforward coupling of 1D and 2D grids, making it suitable for analyzing the complex river and canal network of the Mekong Delta. The validated model suggests that the Mekong Delta receives ~99 Mt/year sediment from the Mekong River. This is much lower than the common estimate of 160 Mt/year. Only about 23% of the modelled total sediment load at Kratie is exported to the sea. The remaining portion is trapped in the rivers and floodplains of the Mekong Delta. The results advance understanding of sediment dynamics and sediment budget in the Mekong Delta. As such the model is an efficient tool to support delta management and planning.

Modelling Human-Flood Interactions - A Coupled Flood-Agent-Institution Modelling Framework for Long-Term Flood Risk Management... Modelling Human-Flood Interactions - A Coupled Flood-Agent-Institution Modelling Framework for Long-Term Flood Risk Management (Paperback)
Yared Abayneh Abebe
R2,068 Discovery Miles 20 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The negative impacts of floods are attributed to the extent and magnitude of a flood hazard, and the vulnerability and exposure of natural and human elements. In flood risk management (FRM) studies, it is crucial to model the interaction between human and flood subsystems across multiple spatial, temporal and organizational scales. Models should address the heterogeneity that exists within the human subsystem, and incorporate institutions that shape the behaviour of individuals. Hence, the main objectives of the dissertation are to develop a modelling framework and a methodology to build holistic models for FRM, and to assess how coupled human-flood interaction models support FRM policy analysis and decision-making. To achieve the objectives, the study introduces the Coupled fLood-Agent-Institution Modelling framework (CLAIM). CLAIM integrates actors, institutions, the urban environment, hydrologic and hydrodynamic processes and external factors, which affect FRM activities. The framework draws on the complex system perspective and conceptualizes the interaction of floods, humans and their environment as drivers of flood hazard, vulnerability and exposure. The human and flood subsystems are modelled using agent-based models and hydrodynamic models, respectively. The two models are dynamically coupled to understand human-flood interactions and to investigate the effect of institutions on FRM policy analysis.

Tropical Marine Mollusks - An Illustrated Biogeographical Guide (Hardcover): Edward J. Petuch, David P. Berschauer Tropical Marine Mollusks - An Illustrated Biogeographical Guide (Hardcover)
Edward J. Petuch, David P. Berschauer
R5,206 Discovery Miles 52 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Marine biogeography, the study of the spatial distribution of organisms in the world's oceans, is one of the most fascinating branches of oceanography. This book continues the pioneering research into the distributions of molluscan faunas, first studied by biologists over 160 years ago. It illustrates 1778 species of gastropods in full color, many of which are extremely rare and poorly known endemic species that are illustrated for the first time outside of their original descriptions. The spatial arrangements of malacofaunas shown in this book can be considered proxies for worldwide oceanic conditions and used as tools for determining patterns of global climate change. The book's documentation of evolutionary "hot spots" and geographically restricted endemic faunas can also be used as a base line for future studies on patterns of environmental deterioration and extinction in the marine biosphere. Documenting the evolution of the amazingly rich worldwide gastropod fauna, this book will appeal to physical and chemical oceanographers, systematic and evolutionary biologists, historical geologists, paleontologists, climatologists, geomorphologists, and physical geographers. The authors incorporate aspects of all of these disciplines into a new classification system for the nomenclature of biogeographical spatial units found in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate seas.

Water in a Dry Land - Place-Learning Through Art and Story (Hardcover): Margaret Somerville Water in a Dry Land - Place-Learning Through Art and Story (Hardcover)
Margaret Somerville
R4,414 Discovery Miles 44 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Water in a Dry Land is a story of research about water as a source of personal and cultural meaning. The site of this exploration is the iconic river system which forms the networks of natural and human landscapes of the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. In the current geological era of human induced climate change, the desperate plight of the system of waterways has become an international phenomenon, a symbol of the unsustainable ways we relate to water globally. The Murray-Darling Basin extends west of the Great Dividing Range that separates the densely populated east coast of Australia from the sparsely populated inland. Aboriginal peoples continue to inhabit the waterways of the great artesian basin and pass on their cultural stories and practices of water, albeit in changing forms. A key question informing the book is: What can we learn about water from the oldest continuing culture inhabiting the world's driest continent? In the process of responding to this question a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers formed to work together in a contact zone of cultural difference within an emergent arts-based ethnography. Photo essays of the artworks and their landscapes offer a visual accompaniment to the text on the Routledge Innovative Ethnography Series website, http://www.innovativeethnographies.net/. This book is perfect for courses in environmental sociology, environmental anthropology, and qualitative methods.

To properly operate a waterworks or wastewater treatment plant and to pass the examination for a waterworks/wastewater operator's license, it is necessary to know how to perform certain calculations. All operators, at all levels of licensure, need a basic understanding of arithmetic and problem-solving techniques to solve the problems they typically encounter in the workplace. Hailed on its first publication as a masterly account written in an engaging, highly readable, user-friendly style, the Mathematics Manual for Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators, Second Edition has been expanded and divided into three specialized texts that contain hundreds of worked examples presented in a step-by-step format. They are ideal for all levels of water treatment operators in training and practitioners studying for advanced licensure. In addition, they provide a handy desk reference and handheld guide for daily use in making operational math computations. Basic Mathematics for Water and Wastewater Operators introduces and reviews fundamental concepts critical to qualified operators. It builds a strong foundation based on theoretical math concepts, which it then applies to solving practical problems for both water and wastewater operations. Water Treatment Operations: Math Concepts and Calculations covers computations used in water treatment, and Wastewater Treatment Operations: Math Concepts and Calculations covers computations commonly used in wastewater treatment plant operations. The volumes present math operations that progressively advance to higher, more practical applications, including math operations that operators at the highest level of licensure would be expected to know and perform. To ensure correlation to modern practice and design, the volumes provide illustrative examples for commonly used waterworks and wastewater treatment operations covering unit process operations found in today's treatment

Governing International Watercourses - River Basin Organizations and the Sustainable Governance of Internationally Shared... Governing International Watercourses - River Basin Organizations and the Sustainable Governance of Internationally Shared Rivers and Lakes (Hardcover, New)
Susanne Schmeier
R4,291 Discovery Miles 42 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on River Basin Organizations as the key institutions for managing internationally shared water resources. This includes a comparative analysis of all River Basin Organizations worldwide and three in-depth case studies from three different continents. The detailed case studies are the Senegal (West Africa), Mekong (South-east Asia) and Danube (Europe) rivers. The book contributes to the academic debate on how shared natural and environmental resources can be managed in a sustainable way and which institutional and legal mechanisms actually matter for doing so. It adopts the neo-institutionalist approach, according to which international environmental institutions do make a difference. The analysis not only confirms this argument for the specific case of shared water resources, but also refines existing hypotheses on the influence of different independent variables, namely the nature of the collective action problem, the constellation of actors and the institutional design of an international environmental institution. The work also contributes to the policy debate on how to better govern internationally shared natural resources and the environment. It provides policy makers with advice on which exogenous conditions to be aware of when managing water resources they share with co-riparians and which institutional design features and governance mechanisms to set up in order to increase effectiveness in management.

Effectiveness of Bank Filtration for Water Supply in Arid Climates - A Case Study in Egypt (Paperback): Ahmed Ragab Abdelrady... Effectiveness of Bank Filtration for Water Supply in Arid Climates - A Case Study in Egypt (Paperback)
Ahmed Ragab Abdelrady Mahmoud
R2,304 Discovery Miles 23 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In many developing countries, water demand is increasing while surface- and groundwater resources are threatened by pollution and overexploitation. Hence, a more sustainable approach to water resources management and water treatment is required. In this capacity, bank filtration is a natural treatment process that makes use of the storage and contaminant attenuation capacity of natural soil/rock. However, BF is site-specific and a significant knowledge gap exists regarding the design and management of bank filtration systems, particularly in developing countries. This research aimed to address these gaps and contribute to the transfer of bank filtration to developing countries. This study comprised both column and batch laboratory-scale experiments to determine the effect of environmental variables such as temperature, raw water organic composition and redox conditions on the removal of chemical pollutants such as organic matter, micro-pollutants and heavy metals as well as the mobility of iron, manganese and arsenic under anaerobic conditions. Ultimately, the effectiveness of BF for supplying high drinking water quality was assessed in a case study in Egypt. The study showed that more than 80% of biodegradable organic matter was removed during infiltration at temperatures between 20 and 30 DegreesC. However, humic compounds enriched during BF, required post-treatment. Moreover, high humic content of infiltrating water reduced the removal of heavy metal and promoted the release of metal (loids) into the infiltrating water, rendering it more feasible to install BF wells within surface water systems with low levels of organic matter. Moderately-hydrophobic organic micropollutants were most persistent and required infiltration times longer than 30 days for complete elimination even at high temperatures (>20 DegreesC). Finally, design parameters such as the number of infiltration wells should be configured to minimise the proportion of polluted groundwater in the pumped water. Overall, this study provides insight into the effectiveness of BF in removing chemical pollutants from surface water and proposes guidelines for the successful application of BF in developing countries where arid conditions and high temperatures prevail.

Visual Spatial Enquiry - Diagrams and Metaphors for Architects and Spatial Thinkers (Paperback): Robyn Creagh, Sarah Mcgann Visual Spatial Enquiry - Diagrams and Metaphors for Architects and Spatial Thinkers (Paperback)
Robyn Creagh, Sarah Mcgann
R1,239 Discovery Miles 12 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Visual Spatial Enquiry explores visual and textual ways of working within spatial research. Architects and spatial thinkers from the arts, social sciences and humanities present rich case studies from remote and regional settings in Australia to the suburbs of Los Angeles, and from gallery and university settings to community collaborations in Mongolia. Through these case studies the authors reappraise and reconsider research approaches, methods and processes within and across their fields. In spatial research diagramming can be used as a method to synthesise complex concepts into a succinct picture, whereas metaphors can add the richness of lived experiences. Drawing on the editors' own architectural backgrounds, this volume is organised into three key themes: seeing, doing and making space. In seeing space chapters consider observational research enquiries where developing empathy for the context and topic is as important as gathering concrete data. Doing space explores generative opportunities that inform new and innovative propositions, and making space looks at ways to rethink and reshape spatial and relational settings. Through this volume Creagh and McGann invite readers to find their own understandings of the value and practices of neighbouring fields including planning, geography, ethnography, architecture and art. This exploration will be of value to researchers looking to develop their cross-disciplinary literacy, and to design practitioners looking to enhance and articulate their research skills.

Off-Site Enhanced Biogas Production with Concomitant Pathogen Removal from Faecal Matter (Paperback): Joy Nyawira Riungu Off-Site Enhanced Biogas Production with Concomitant Pathogen Removal from Faecal Matter (Paperback)
Joy Nyawira Riungu
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Globally, 2.7 billion people are using onsite sanitation systems, particularly in low income, high density settlements (LIHDS) in urban areas of developing countries. However, treatment technologies to manage the faecal sludge (FS) generated from these systems are often not in place, leading to high risks for environmental and public health. The development of replicable and effective technologies for FS treatment is key in addressing this challenge. This research focused on development of an innovative FS stabilisation technology and addressed key constraints in anaerobic FS treatment: inadequate pathogen inactivation and limitations in biochemical energy recovery. The developed two-stage reactor system consists of an acidogenic reactor fed with mixtures of FS and market waste to facilitate pathogen inactivation, and a subsequent methanogenic plug-flow reactor for enhanced methane production. Due to its potential for application as an off-site FS treatment technology at any scale, receiving any type of faecal matter, collected from different types of sanitary systems, the system provides an option for FS stabilisation for LIHDS. Additionally, the research evaluated the limitations of sanitation provision in LIHDS, and proposes methods for creating an enabling environment for full-scale implementation of onsite systems. The presented results contribute to designing appropriate sanitation interventions in LIHDS.

Water Management, Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Developing Economies (Hardcover): M. Dinesh Kumar, M.V.K... Water Management, Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Developing Economies (Hardcover)
M. Dinesh Kumar, M.V.K Sivamohan, Nitin Bassi
R4,418 Discovery Miles 44 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book addresses strategies for food security and sustainable agriculture in developing economies. The book focuses primarily on India, a fast developing economy, whose natural resource base comprising land and water supporting agricultural production is not only under enormous stress, but also complex and not amenable to a uniform strategy. It critically reviews issues which continue to dominate the debate on water management for agricultural and food production. The book examines the validity of the claim that large water resources projects cause serious social and environmental damages using global and national datasets. The authors examine claims that the future of Indian agriculture is in rain-fed farming supported by small water harvesting. They question whether water-abundant eastern India could become the granary of India, through a groundwater revolution with the right policy inputs. In the process, they look at the less researched aspect of the food security challenge, which is land scarcity in eastern India. The book analyzes the physical, economic and social impacts of large-scale adoption of micro irrigation systems, using a farming system approach for north Gujarat. Through an economic valuation of the multiple use benefits from tank systems in western Orissa, it shows how value of water from large public irrigation systems could be enhanced. The book also looks at the reasons for the limited success in bringing about the much needed institutional reforms in canal irrigation for securing higher productivity and equity using case studies of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Finally it addresses how other countries in the developing world, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa could learn from Indian experience.
