The Shelf2Life Trains & Railroads Collection provides a unique
opportunity for researchers and railroad enthusiasts to easily
access and explore pre-1923 titles focusing on the history, culture
and experience of railroading. From the revolution of the steam
engine to the thrill of early travel by rail, railroads opened up
new opportunities for commerce, American westward expansion and
travel. These books provide a unique view of the impact of this
type of transportation on our urban and rural societies and
cultures, while allowing the reader to share the experience of
early railroading in a new and unique way. The Trains &
Railroads Collection offers a valuable perspective on this
important and fascinating aspect of modern industrialization.
FULL COLOR publication, incorporating 2011 addendum chapter on
human factors . The "Aviation Maintenance Technician
Handbook-General" was developed as one of a series of three
handbooks for persons preparing for mechanic certification with
airframe or powerplant ratings, or both. It is intended that this
handbook will provide basic information on principles,
fundamentals, and technical procedures in the subject matter areas
common to both the airframe and powerplant ratings. Emphasis in
this volume is on theory and methods of application. The handbook
is designed to aid students enrolled in a formal course of
instruction preparing for FAA certification as a maintenance
technician, as well as for current technicians who wish to improve
their knowledge. This volume contains information on mathematics,
aircraft drawings, weight and balance, aircraft materials,
processes and tools, physics, electricity, inspection, ground
operations, and FAA regulations governing the certification and
work of maintenance technicians. New to this volume is a section
addressing how successful aviation maintenance technicians
incorporate knowledge and awareness of ethics, professionalism, and
human factors in the field.
This Companion is part of the Oxford Reference Collection: using
sustainable print-on-demand technology to make the acclaimed
backlist of the Oxford Reference programme perennially available in
hardback format. The most comprehensive and authoritative reference
book of its kind, The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea was
first published in 1976 to huge acclaim, hailed as 'a beguiling
book' (Daily Telegraph), 'marvellous' (The Times), and 'totally
absorbing' (Financial Times). This second edition was published in
2006 and brought together more than 2,600 entries on every
imaginable aspect of the seas and the vessels that sail on them,
from shipbuilding, yachting, diving, and marine mammals, to tidal
power, piracy, and the literature and language of the sea. This
edition provides significant material on topics that have come to
prominence in recent times, such as oceanography and marine
archaeology: key contributions on these subjects from marine expert
Dr Martin Angel at Southampton Oceanography Centre include climate
change, environmental issues, marine pollution, and marine
wildlife. Entries added to this edition are underwater vehicles,
tsunamis, warfare at sea, marine pollution, the Economic Exclustion
Zone, and ship preservation. This Companion also includes
authoritative and fascinating entries on maritime history: its
naval battles, its great ships, from Noah's Ark and the Bounty to
the Titanic and the Mary Rose; and its most famous individuals,
both real and fictional, including Christopher Columbus, Horatio
Nelson, and Robinson Crusoe. Entries are fully cross-referenced,
and the text is illustrated with over 260 detailed drawings.
This book deals with the golden age of the British motorcycle,
featuring 100 machines shown in over 200 photographs. It offers a
chronological survey of British motorcycles from the pioneers of
1900 through to the end of the 20th century. It features all the
famous marques, such as AJS, Brough, BSA, Douglas, Greeves, Norton,
Panther, Royal Enfield, Rudge, Scott, Sunbeam, Triumph, Velocette,
Vincent and Zenith. Each entry includes information about the
history of the bike, with specification panels detailing years in
production, engine type, bore and stroke, capacity, gearbox,
brakes, transmission, power, weight and top speed. From the
beginning of the 20th century, the British motorcycle rapidly
gained in reliability and sophistication. It began as a plaything
of the leisured classes, until the war forced it into a utilitarian
role. When peace returned in the 1920s, it was poised to fill a
demand for mass transport, ushering in a golden age. Divided into
four sections - The Pioneers, Vintage Days, The Classic Era, and
Endings and Beginnings - this book profiles 100 of the best-loved
machines that shaped a century of motorcycle design. It includes all
the famous marques, each one illustrated with identification
photographs, making it a book every bike enthusiast will want to
own.

When Christopher Ross put on a hi-visibility vest and joined London
Underground as a station assistant, he discovered a Plato's cave of
reflection and human comedy, populated by streakers, buskers,
onanists and angry commuters. A meditation on life, a philosophical
enquiry into human nature and a profoundly funny dissection of
urban madness. Christopher Ross, philosopher and traveller, decided
to cease his journeyings and go underground, working for a year as
a station assistant on Platform 6 (northbound Victoria Line) at
Oxford Circus. After training school, where he is taught how not to
electrocute himself and always to look a member of the public in
the eye as they are assaulting you, he faces up to his new duties
with a mixture of curiosity and foreboding. 'Tunnel Visions' is a
delightful mixture of lived experience in the sureal world of
London's Underground and the more elevated ideas, thoughts and
imaginings that experience provokes. Oxford Circus station,
complete with its weeping wall, its streakers, buskers, onanists
and cupboard containing one employee whose ideal working day was to
sleep soundly 100 feet below ground, is a Plato's Cave of
reflection and human comedy. Christopher Ross, a still point in the
whirling stream of the bizarre and otherworldly life below ground,
has written a profoundly funny book.
Flotilla sailing enables thousands of people every year to charter
a yacht and enjoy a holiday in a sunny foreign location: a group of
boats sails together under the guidance of a lead crew. In 1974,
the first holiday flotilla of eleven yachts set off from Aegina in
the Saronic Gulf of Greece and no-one involved could have had any
idea that they were at the beginning of something that would grow
so big. It is now possible to go flotilla sailing in every
continent of the world. The author traces how flotillas originated,
how new cruising areas were opened up and new companies formed. He
worked closely with the pioneers of this form of tourism who
willingly contributed to the research into what they called 'the
time of our lives': managers in one or other of the companies,
skippers or engineers in charge of the boats, and clients. The
second part of the book looks in detail at changes in some villages
and harbours of the Ionian Sea, an area where much of the
development has occurred through the influence of the boats rather
than land-based tourism. It draws on conversations with taverna
owners who remember when two visiting yachts was big business.
Every page has coloured reproductions from the original brochures
and cruising guides, and in the Ionian section modern photos are
set alongside equivalent views before the yachts started coming in
numbers. The book may be an introduction to flotillas, an insight
into the background of the companies which now offer charters of
this sort, or just a memento of a wonderful holiday.
