`The Last Years of Steam Around the East Midlands' covers most of
the railways across the county and the locomotives that worked over
them. In the main, the time period covers the ten years or so from
the late 1950s up to the end of steam working in the East Midlands.
In addition to steam locomotives, their diesel replacements will
also be shown. A number of industrial locations will also be
visited, and in particular, the book explores the now-closed
Ironstone Railways of the East Midlands. The photographs, a mixture
of colour and black and white, come mostly from those taken by the
author and his late father, with the balance coming from his
father's old friends. Most of the photographs have never been
published, with all images accompanied by an extensive and
informative commentary.
The SS Great Britain Story is a concise account of one of the most
famous steamships ever built. The great Victorian engineer Isambard
Kingdom Brunel embraced the latest innovations, including an iron
hull and a screw-propeller, to create an ocean liner that was
decades ahead of its time. Launched by Prince Albert in 1843, the
SS Great Britain was nearly lost three years later when she ran
aground in Dundrum Bay, Ireland. Fortunately she weathered the
winter storms and went on to enjoy a long and chequered career. She
spent many years transporting emigrants to Australia, served as a
cargo vessel, and almost ended her days stranded on the Falkland
Islands. Following an incredible rescue mission in the 1970s, fully
documented here, she was returned to dry-dock in Bristol, where she
was originally built, and is now the centrepiece of a fascinating
and ongoing restoration project.
Tourism, Tourists and Society provides a broad introduction to the
inter-relationship between tourism and society, making complex
sociological concepts and themes accessible to readers from a
non-sociological academic background. It provides a thorough
exploration of how society influences or shapes the behaviours,
motivations, attitudes and consumption of tourists, as well as the
tourism impacts on destination societies. The fifth edition has
been fully revised and updated to reflect recent data, concepts and
academic debates: * New content on: mobilities paradigm and the
emotional dimension of tourist experiences. * New chapter: Tourism
and the Digital Revolution, looking at the ways in which the
Internet and mobile technology transform both tourist behaviour and
the tourist experience. * New end-of-chapter further reading and
discussion topics. Accessible yet critical in style, this book
offers students an invaluable introduction to tourism, tourists and
society.

Long before Glenn Miller made the world-famous "Chattanooga Choo
Choo" an American icon, Chattanooga was already a bustling railroad
community. By the beginning of the 20th century, passenger trains
overwhelmed Chattanooga's two railroad depots and a larger station
was needed. The solution was Terminal Station, which rivaled most
Southern depots in size, expense, and aesthetic beauty. Providing
transportation to cities throughout the country, the terminal made
its mark as the gateway for rail from the agricultural south to the
industrial north. Following its closure, the terminal was reopened
as a renowned hotel and entertainment complex in 1973, becoming one
of Chattanooga's many exciting attractions. Images of Rail:
Chattanooga's Terminal Station follows the history of this depot in
both stories and photographs.

through the stories of their owners. Almost 400 photos offer a peek
at the rare, the unique, the coveted, and the just plain adorable.
Tag along to a vintage trailer rally, visit an all-girls camp, and

paneling, chenille bedspreads, and a period-perfect Dixie stove, to
a "Sharkstream" trailer-as-art-installation. Those with the
conviction that trailers deserve to be loved and lived in will
enjoy exploring the possibilities as they search for, renovate, or
simply dream of living in their own little piece of history.
Although goods traffic accounted in many cases for a higher
proportion of railway companies' revenue than passengers, the
buildings associated with it have received very little attention in
comparison to their passenger counterparts. They once played as
important a role in distribution as the 'big sheds' near motorway
junctions do today. The book shows how the basic design of goods
sheds evolved early in the history of railways, and how the form of
goods sheds reflected the function they performed. Although goods
sheds largely functioned in the same way, there was considerable
scope for variety of architectural expression in their external
design. The book brings out how they varied considerably in size
from small timber huts to the massive warehouses seen in major
cities. It also looks at how many railway companies developed
standard designs for these buildings towards the end of the 19th
century and at how traditional materials such as timber, brick and
stone gave way to steel and concrete in the 20th This building type
is subject to a high level of threat with development pressure in
urban and suburban areas for both car parking and housing having
already accounted for the demise of many of these buildings.
Despite this, some 600 have been identified as still extant and the
book will, for the first time, provide a comprehensive gazetteer of
the surviving examples.
For the economical do-it-yourselfer who wants to build his or her
own skiff, this instruction manual relies on simple techniques and
hand-powered tools and shows how to make a boat in a minimum amount
of time. Start your flatiron skiff in the spring and be on the
water by summer. Boat-building instructor K. D. Jones explains his
"Thoreau Approach," which involves learning to trust your instincts
like craftsmen of centuries past as you use your eyes and hands to
build simple, elegant, functional boats. The book includes lists of
recommended tools and accessories, design variations, instructional
photographs and drawings, and a little history about this
under-appreciated type of boat, named for its resemblance in shape
to an antique cast-iron press. The use of these traditional methods
and of local materials not only reduces construction costs but also
prevents exposure to toxic adhesives and solvents.
This book is a gallery of more than two hundred photographs,
including a colour section, featuring a selection of Great Western
Railway/British Railways (Western) branch lines and similar
services taken between 1900 and 1965\. The emphasis is pictorial
rather than factual with the aim of using photographs provided by
two transport charities as well as the author, all of which are
unlikely to have appeared previously in print or on the Internet.
Generally, images depict working trains surrounded by recognisable
infrastructure, often with station nameboards visible. Such
pictures should be of particular interest to railway modellers as
well as invoking nostalgia for the older generation who were
pursuing their hobby around the time the pictures were taken. Most
of the branch lines covered were victims of the 1960s "Beeching
Axe", with closure to passengers or complete closure coming even
earlier in some cases. Most of the services depicted are steam
operated although a few GWR and BR diesel railcars/multiple units
are included. All the scenes seem to reflect a more leisurely way
of life than exists today.
Range Unlimited covers the developmental history of aerial
refueling, including the United States and other countries, as well
as modern advancements and technologies. Also covered are the
current aerial refueling model types and configurations used in the
world today, as well as a look at what refueling techniques may be
applied in the 21st century and beyond.
Photographs, diagrams, and step-by-step procedures illustrate how
to repair and maintain domestic and Canadian models of the Camry.

When the B-52 Stratofortress entered operational service with the
US Air Force in 1955, work was already underway on defining its
successor. The B-70 Valkyrie, a Mach 3 jet bomber, was one option.
Although two XB-70A prototypes flew, the B-70 never went into
production. Out of the subsequent Advanced Manned Strategic
Aircraft program came the B-1A bomber, which flew at high speed and
low altitude to evade enemy air defenses. The B-1A was cancelled in
favor of fitting the B-52 with cruise missiles. The B-1, known as
the BONE, was revived in 1981 as the improved B-1B to boost
American military power and be a symbol of American strength at the
peak of Cold War tensions. The B-1B entered service in 1986 with
several deficiencies. The resolution of most of these issues
coincided with the end of the Cold War. After the Cold War, the
B-1B lost its primary nuclear mission but remained relevant by
transforming into a high-speed, long-range, high-payload delivery
platform for conventional precision-guided munitions. The first
combat use of the B-1B was in 1998 in Iraq. The BONE has proved a
highly effective combat aircraft in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria
and the former Yugoslavia. This superbly researched and illustrated
book traces the BONE's long development and operational history in
fascinating detail.
