Books > Sport & Leisure > Transport: general interest
City and state governments around the world are struggling to
achieve environmentally sustainable transport. Economic,
technological, city and transport planning and human behaviour
solutions are often hampered by ineffective implementation. So
attention is now turning to institutional, governmental and
political barriers. Approaches to these implementation problems
assume that transport ownership can only be public (owned by state
entities) or private (corporate or personal). Another option -
largely unexplored to date - is communal ownership of transport.
Community-Owned Transport proposes and develops the notion that
communal ownership has a historical basis and provides unique
opportunities for providing personal mobility. It looks at the
historical roots of modern urban transport's failings as those of
technological change and the associated governing of transport
systems, particularly the role of public sector institutions.
Community ownership is explored through the new 'sharing economy'
developments - car sharing, ridesharing and bicycle share schemes -
and older social innovations in ecovillages and communal living.
Models and practices of community ownership of transport are
provided and this study also discusses how community ownership
might contribute to sustainable transport. Drawing widely on
different disciplines and fields of scholarship, this book explores
the conceptual and practical aspects of communal ownership of
transport. It will be a valuable resource for those seeking
innovative approaches to addressing the pressing problems of
transport, including graduate and postgraduate students, as well as
policymakers, practitioners and community groups.
This book is the first to take an in-depth examination of
marginalisation and events. Marginalisation has been the subject of
academic research for some time now. For example, marginalisation
and exclusion have been identified as problematic in fields as
diverse as geography, public health, education and media studies.
However, little research has been carried out within the field of
event studies. Using of a range of different theoretical and
methodological approaches from a variety of disciplines, the volume
applies a critical approach to events as they relate to
marginalisation that seeks to address the 'how' and 'why', and to
provide a holistic picture of their place and influence in the
lives of marginalised individuals and communities. International
through authorship and examples, it encompasses case studies from
around the world, including South Africa, the United Kingdom,
Italy, Afghanistan, the United States, Brazil, Portugal, Australia
and New Zealand. This is essential reading for students and
researchers in the fields of critical event studies, anthropology,
cultural studies, tourism, sociology and management.
The Abermule railway disaster is still the worst single line rail
disaster the UK has ever known. It occurred on the Cambrian railway
in 1921, killing thirty-four and injuring sixty-five people. The
railway operational ramifications of this terrible accident were
felt as far away as India. This detailed book focuses on the
Abermule disaster, telling the story using reports and testimonies,
photographs and diagrams. The book covers the accident itself, the
people involved, passengers, workers, the railway company, the
wreckage, the witnesses, the casualties, the press, the inquest,
the verdict, and presents original theories on how the incident
happened, backed up by information from the son of one of the
principal players.
On August 7, 2011, former Pennsylvania Railroad type E8A diesel
units No. 5711 and No. 5809 are passing through the borough of
Greenville in Mercer County, Pennsylvania on the former Erie
Railroad now Norfolk Southern Railway on a rail excursion in this
photograph by the author. The Erie and Pittsburgh line of the
Pennsylvania Railroad once served Greenville. Kenneth Springirth,
with a lifelong interest in rail transportation, has been
researching the Pennsylvania Railroad since 1960. Born and raised
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he commuted to Drexel Institute of
Technology (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia by trolley car,
subway, and sometimes Pennsylvania Railroad commuter train. His
father was a trolley car motorman in Philadelphia, and his
grandfather was a trolley car motorman in Washington D.C. This book
is a photographic essay documenting the Pennsylvania Railroad,
which considered itself the standard railroad of the world. Classic
scenes of the Pennsylvania Railroad's amazing GG1 electric
locomotives operating on the most successful electrification
project in the United States are included. This book provides an
insight to an extensive railroad system that survives today with
the Norfolk Southern Railway owning much of former mainline
trackage in Pennsylvania and Amtrak owning the Northeast Corridor
plus trackage between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. In addition,
there are a variety of regional and shortline railroads that
contribute to Remembering the Pennsylvania Railroad.

In 2015 Cunard celebrate their 175th anniversary. Its heritage
dates back to 1839 where Sir Samuel Cunard won the first British
Government contract to supply a regular mail service across the
North Atlantic. Since that date Cunard has had hundreds of ocean
liners. Cunard's golden age occurred after the Second World War
when the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth entered full commercial
service. In the late Fifties Cunard faced the most fierce
competitor, the Boeing 707 on the Transatlantic routes. This saw a
great decline in the Cunard fleet but amidst the jet revolution
Cunard gambled with their future on a new ship, the QE2. With the
expanding cruise market in the late Nineties, the company was to
see further new-builds, including the QM2. This anniversary book
brings together the full story of Cunard and not only follows the
history of the company but also many of the celebrities and film
stars who have been associated with Cunard.
The Mazda Miata is one of the most popular sports cars on the road
today. In production for more than 20 years, the Miata's popularity
has grown, and the number of aftermarket components available to
the Miata enthusiast has grown, too. This immense selection of
parts has made it difficult for many would-be modifiers to choose
the proper combination that will help them reach the goals they
have set for their two-seaters. Author and Miata expert Keith
Tanner has been modifying, repairing, building, and racing Miatas
for years, and he will guide you through how to best modify your
car to suit your needs, starting with an explanation on how
everything works and how the various parts will interact. You'll
not only learn what upgrades will help you reach your goals, but
also how to adjust or modify what you have to make your car work at
its best. From autocross to cross-country touring, the Miata can do
it all. Keith Tanner tells you how to make it happen!
As the Luftwaffe's standard fighter, beginning in 1937 the Bf 109
was produced in large numbers and after the outbreak of the Second
World War saw action over every front. With this light,
high-performance aircraft Professor Willy Messerschmitt had created
a ground-breaking design. The Bf 109 had to remain in continuous
development in order to keep pace with advances in Allied fighter
design. 1941 saw the advent of the Bf 109 F, a clearly improved
version, which was soon replaced by the more powerful and better
armed Bf 109 G. The Bf 109 H high-altitude fighter reached a
ceiling of 14,000 meters, and the Bf 109 K, the most potent of all
the variants of this fighter aircraft, entered production in the
last year of the war. This is a complete summary of all versions
from the Bf 109 F to K with many photographs, some never before
published, and details.
The Shipmaster's Handbook on Ship's Business has been an invaluable
aid to masters of ships for more than thirty years. Since the
publication of the second edition more than a decade ago, many
substantive changes have occurred in both the legal and operational
environments affecting seagoing vessels and their crews. In
response to these changes, this book has been completely updated;
it has also been renamed to include masters on all seagoing
vessels, including oceangoing tugs. A complete guide for the newly
appointed master, it is also useful to experienced masters as a
checklist for the voluminous paperwork required in all phases of
business aboard: shipping articles, vessel documents and
certificates, crew lists, customs and immigration requirements,
accounting procedures, bills of lading, charter parties, vessel
accidents, and logbooks.
The master of a vessel is required to comply with state and
federal laws that apply to the vessel and crew, with the laws of
foreign countries when the vessel is in their waters, and with
applicable international law. Mastering the details of all these
various jurisdictions can be intimidating, but this handbook
demystifies the regulations and states the requirements in plain
language.
New topics in the third edition include vessel security,
communications, GMDSS, and flag etiquette. Useful appendices give
details on various agencies and contact personnel, acronyms and
definitions, and medical evacuation and travelers' insurance
companies.
Number 3 in the Luftwaffe Profile Series describes the design and
use of the Heinkel He 219 UHU.
Robert Mikesh takes the reader step by step through the process of
aircraft restoration from the initial decision to prepare for an
exhibit: Does it fit the museum's aims? How will it be displayed?
Will it fly? And of course: Is it good value? Initial preparation
before disassembly are noted and then the principal techniques in
working with wood-and-fabric, and metal aircraft are discussed,
using many interesting real examples. Types of propulsion, tires,
colors and markings are covered systematically and the different
requirements for indoor or outdoor exhibition are shown. This book
is considered the authoritative reference to the wide and complex
subject of aircraft preservation and restoration.
For 100 years, the world's oldest independent air force, the RAF,
forged a distinguished record in military air operations from the
First World War through to recent operations over Iraq and Syria.
There is, however, a field of endeavour in which the Royal Air
Force has excelled: selling its public image. Of the three armed
services, the air force is the one perfectly placed to advertise
its wares 'at home' with the facilities to accommodate large
audiences, through scintillating flying displays with ever more
impressive aircraft and large airfields with readily available
facilities. Originally centred on the RAF station at Hendon in
North London, the RAF held its first public 'Air Pageant' in 1920.
A grand affair, it continued as an annual event until 1937 when it
was succeeded by the widespread 'Empire Air Day' held at several
RAF stations until war intervened in 1939. The RAF came to true
military prominence during the Second World War, particularly the
'Battle of Britain'; this then became the focus of the celebration
and commemoration. However, the Battle of Britain Displays
constantly contracted, eventually to zero, but for much of their
existence were the most impressive air shows around the globe.
Outlines and illustrates maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair
procedures for the Honda GL-1000, listing all motorcycle dimensions
and capacities in standard and metric units.
Great Railway Journeys in Asia showcases 34 of the best rail
journeys in South, Southeast and North Asia. The journeys chosen by
David Bowden, an avid rail traveller, range from quirky trains used
as essential travel for locals, such as the North Borneo Railway,
to trains on which passengers can experience 5 star luxury as they
travel through stunning scenery, as, for example, the opulence of
India's Palace on Wheels. Other journeys are chosen for the marvel
of their engineering, Thailand's Death Railway for instance,
features the 300 metre-long Tham Krasae trestle bridge or for the
length of a country that they traverse, like the Trans-Mongolian
Railway that connects Beijing with Moscow via vast plains and
steppes. Some are slow trains and some travel at super-high speeds.
For each journey, there is historical, technical and practical
information as well as interesting details on the places accessible
from the main stations. Each is accompanied by a route map. Whether
you are planning a special trip by train or delighting in
discovering Asia's best railway journeys from the comfort of your
armchair, this book is an informative and entertaining read.
