The only text of its kind for practicing clinicians, Quick Reference Guide: Otolaryngology is a comprehensive, quick-access reference written specifically for nurses, physician's assistants, and medical students. The book is authored by a nurse practitioner with two practicing otolaryngologists, who are among the most highly respected professionals in their fields, as consultants. The guide is consistently organized by anatomical region and contains, for each topic, easy-to-follow tables, charts, diagrams, and algorithms to guide in the work-up, differential diagnosis, diagnostic methods, medical therapy, and treatment alternatives. The text includes procedure protocols used in clinical settings and staging criteria for common cancer diagnoses. Another important feature is the guide's overview of surgical management for specific conditions. Topics are covered on a "need-to-know" basis for written boards and certification review. The purpose of this text is to provide not only the science and current knowledge of pediatric pain management but a rationale for intervention. The book is ground-breaking in that it provides pearls for the recognition and management of multiple childhood chronic pain syndromes. Also, uncommon yet confounding issues such as pain management for epidermolysis bullosa are adequately addressed. Concerns unique to pediatric patients are reviewed. While there are no firm standards in pediatric chronic pain, a care plan is offered to help guide practitioners when possible. The book will consist of 24 chapters, many co-written by a physician and a psychologist. Chapter 1 covers the history of pediatric chronic pain, the advancement pediatric pain as a clinical subspecialty, development of pediatric pain clinics, and characterization of the common pain syndromes. Chapters 2-4 cover, respectively, the research on early pain exposure and neuroplasticity, theories on the common adolescent pain syndromes, and the demographics of chronic pain in children. Chapters 5-16 discuss approaches to assessment and intervention for specific pediatric and adolescent pain syndromes. Chapters 17-23 address interventional techniques such as therapeutic blocks, neurablation, implantable systems, physical therapy, complementary therapy, and pharmacology including opioid tolerance. The final chapter discusses the role of the nurse practitioner in pediatric chronic pain.
Programs that address the transition from practical/vocational nursing to Baccalaureate nursing were virtually nonexistent two years ago; today there are 155 such programs, a number that continues to increase. This is the first text to address the specific educational needs of students transitioning from LPN/LVN to BSN and professional practice. Comprehensive and user-friendly, the text covers every aspect of role transition in the LPN/LVN to BSN course. It is based on the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's "Future of Nursing" and the "BSN in 10" initiative. The text addresses competence in leadership and management, critical thinking, cultural intelligence, information technology, and professional writing, as well as legal and ethical concerns. It focuses on the role of the RN within an interdisciplinary team, describes the experience of returning to an academic setting, and the challenges of and strategies for accomplishing a successful role transition. Each of us has at least once in our lifetime come into contact with
nurses of all backgrounds, whether in the course of being cared for
or while they care for our family and friends. More often than not,
we have seen nurses as what they truly are: compassionate
professionals who often go above and beyond the call of duty in an
unequivocally selfless manner. But not many of us have taken time
to ponder over the challenges nurses confront, the experiences they
encounter, and the stories that come with these opportunities to
change people's lives and be sometimes changed in the course of
doing so.

Wide Neighborhoods is the autobiography of Mary Breckinridge, the remarkable founder of the Frontier Nursing Service. It is equally the story of the unique organization she founded in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky in 1925 -- the Frontier Nursing Service. Riding out on horseback, the FNS nurse-midwives, the first of their profession in this country, proved that high mortality rates and malnutrition need not be the norm in remote rural areas. The FNS, through its example and through the graduates of tis school of midwifery and family nursing, has exerted a lasting influence on family health care throughout the world.
NOW A NETFLIX FILM STARRING EDDIE REDMAYNE AND JESSICA CHASTAIN 'A stunning book... should and does bring to mind In Cold Blood' New York Times After his arrest in 2003, registered nurse Charlie Cullen was quickly dubbed 'The Angel of Death' by the media. But Cullen was no mercy killer, nor was he a simple monster. He was a favourite son, husband, beloved father, best friend and celebrated caregiver. Implicated in the deaths of as many as 300 patients, he was also perhaps the most prolific serial killer in American history. Cullen's murderous career in the world's most trusted profession spanned sixteen years and nine hospitals. Chronicling Cullen's deadly career and the breathless efforts to stop him, The Good Nurse paints an incredibly vivid portrait of madness and offers an urgent, terrifying tale of murder, friendship and betrayal.
Real security law is where property law and credit law meet to regulate the rights that creditors have to property belonging to their debtors – either as agreed upon between the parties or as imposed by the law. Security rights facilitate affordable borrowing, investment in property and industry, and thus the promise of economic prosperity. Secured lenders are also empowered with stronger rights than other creditors and with more beneficial debt enforcement options. In our ever-changing economic and social context, a sophisticated system of law is necessary to maintain a fine balance between the rights of debtors, creditors, third parties and the general public – especially when things go wrong. Financial crises, rising consumer over-indebtedness and the fight against homelessness are but some important considerations that challenge this area of law. Real Security Law covers all of the conventional forms of real security, such as the mortgage of land, the pledge of movables, general and special notarial bonds, security cessions, the landlord’s tacit hypothec and rights of retention. It also includes security mechanisms imposed by statutes, for example municipal charges, embargo powers, the instalment-agreement hypothec and statutory pledges. The aim of this volume is to describe and analyse the current state of real security law in South Africa, starting with our common law foundation but with a particular focus on developments inspired by the Bill of Rights and other statutory and socio-economic changes in society. Therefore, the most recent developments in constitutional, statutory and case law are incorporated, and the aim is to strike a balance between legal theory, constitutional imperatives, commercial realities and the needs of practice.
Taxation of Legal Costs in South Africa provides clear and practical guidance on taxation of costs, which will assist in determining reasonable costs in line with the existing legal system. Taxation is about the quantification of legal costs and therein lies the crux of any costs issue. The book explains how the process of taxation exercises control over costs that are legally recovered so that fees and costs are reasonable. Taxation of Legal Costs in South Africa identifies the key aspects of costs and all aspects of taxation. It records and integrates the practices, rules, tariffs and judgments of court to provide a practical resource. The discretion that is applied in taxing bills of costs and the principles relied upon in reviewing taxations are discussed extensively. The book analyses maximum tariffs that legal practitioners may charge, which have a significant impact on both the public and the legal profession. The author also offers practical suggestions for solutions to challenges that arise in practice.
