While many books focus on occupational health and safety in the international arena, few provide information pertinent to safety management in South Africa and in Africa as a whole. Safety Management in an Organisational Context aims to bridge this gap and to increase safety awareness at all levels of any organisation in Africa. The topics discussed in the book include safety in industry, functional safety, working in confined spaces, ergonomics and fire safety. The general provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and its regulations are explained in detail as they relate to safety in the South African workplace today.

Where is South Africa going now? And where will South Africa be in five years’ time? Much has been written about the country’s past, but is enough thought being given to its future? Is South Africa in danger of again losing its way, given its pressing socio-economic challenges? Prominent economist Raymond Parsons has drawn together a powerful collection of expert thinkers, economists and analysts who tackle these issues head on as well as offering timely solutions to several of South Africa’s most pressing problems, drawing key lessons from the past in crystallising what South Africa needs to do to create a better future. After the so-called ‘lost decade’ under the Zuma administration, South Africans had high hopes that President Ramaphosa would deliver on his promise of a ‘new dawn’. Yet despite high expectations that the country would finally turn the corner and settle onto a path of stronger inclusive growth and better governance, socioeconomic conditions have deterioriated. Growth remains negligible, unemployment has worsened and the fiscus is under considerable strain. Will SA be able to break out of its present ‘growth trap’ without falling into a ‘debt trap’? The country is also facing global headwinds in the form of volatile market conditions, shifting geopolitics, and a fast-changing and disruptive technological landscape which threatens to leave all but the most well-prepared behind. So how must the different strands of policy – ranging from purely economic issues to broader questions around education and the rule of law – now knit together to create a bigger, stronger and better SA economy in future? If the vision of a well-functioning society is to be realised, policy uncertainty about the road ahead must be generally tackled at the highest level to facilitate job-rich growth. And business and civil society, in its turn, must take a long-term view of South Africa’s future and commit energy and resources to bringing about change which is both productive and transformational. Recession, Recovery & Reform will offer compelling new insights into how South Africa can unlock its potential in the years ahead. The publication of this title a month ahead of the ANC policy conference in June 2020, at which President Ramaphosa’s political and economic ‘track record’ will be widely assessed, ensures it will be a must-read for all who are concerned about South Africa’s well-being and who are willing to believe that a ‘new dawn’ is indeed possible.
In a small tight-knit community, gossip and rumour spread like wildfire, inflaming personal grievances until no-one is safe from accusation and vengeance. The Crucible is Arthur Miller's classic dramatisation of the witch-hunt and trials that besieged the Puritan community of Salem in 1692. Seen as a chilling parallel to the McCarthyism and repressive culture of fear that gripped America in the 1950s, the play's timeless relevance and appeal remains as strong as when the play opened on Broadway in 1953. This new edition includes an introduction by Soyica Diggs Colbert, that explores the play's production history as well as the dramatic, thematic, and academic debates that surround it; a must-have resource for any student exploring The Crucible.
A book that requires no introduction, Caney’s The Law of Suretyship has, for over 70 years, been an authoritative reference work for the law of suretyship in South Africa. The 6th edition incorporates significant developments since the last edition in 2002, a period in which South African courts have been very busy in this area of the law. This latest edition once again ensures that the treatment of its subject matter is most comprehensive, whilst remaining accessible to non-specialists. The Law of Suretyship contains three parts, each dealing with different stages in the life of a contract of surety, namely: the nature, formation and operation of the contract; the rights of the surety; and the release of the surety. Each part contains a detailed discussion of their respective topic. The authors’ treatment of each topic is well researched and supported by a host of authority, and the main text is enhanced by additional information and further discussions in the footnotes.
From 1 May 2011 company law in South Africa was dramatically altered: the 1973 Act which had governed companies for the life-times of most business people and lawyers in South Africa was replaced by the Companies Act of 2008, as amended in March 2011. A new era of company law dawned, and with it a host of new concepts, rights, remedies, obligations, procedures and sanctions were introduced. These fundamentally affect the way that every business operates and the advice and practice of every lawyer, accountant or other professional adviser. This title, the first to cover the new Act and the new regulations, provides the hand-holding, the insight, and the understanding that business and their advisers require in order not to be wrong-footed by the new regime.
Most of the research into what constitutes effective leadership emanates from the United States and is not very useful in an African context. Africa is a continent of extraordinary cultural, geographic, economic and political diversity, featuring largely emerging economies and rapid political economic and social development. This book seeks to set leadership theory in the African context. It takes into account typical African circumstances, values and beliefs, designed for the development of leaders' skills and provides practical, real-life examples, exercises and case studies. As well as an overview of the extensive research literature about leadership, the book provides practical, real-life examples, exercises and case studies, so it can be used in a range of management development courses and/or leadership course or workshops. The detailed insights into, and information about, how leadership can be effectively applied in the contemporary African context should help to enhance readers' leadership skills.

Obstetrics is a unique field of medical care because, in its uncomplicated or natural form, pregnancy, labour and delivery are not diseases, but normal physiological events constituting an integral part of human life. Three equally important facets form the basis of obstetrics: the needs of the pregnant woman, the wellbeing of the baby, and the ability to perform a medical intervention should either of these be threatened - before, during and after birth. Clinical obstetrics is an authoritative and up-to-date textbook dealing with current obstetric practice and focusing specifically on conditions and problems prevailing in South Africa. Clinical obstetrics covers a wide range of topics from physiological adaptations, diagnosis and management of normal pregnancy and delivery, to teratogenesis, red cell allo-immunisation, congenital abnormalities and pre-term labour. It also discusses the risks involved in poor progress in labour, abnormal fetal lie and presentation, viral infections and multiple pregnancies. There are separate sections for medical and surgical conditions, as well as diagnostic procedures. Clinical obstetrics is aimed primarily at medical students, but will also be of great value to nurses, registrars in obstetrics and gynaecology, general practitioners and specialists in this field.

The Companies Act (No. 71 of 2008), as now amended by the Companies Amendment Act (No. 3 of 2011), introduced many concepts, principles and rules that were foreign to South Africa's common law. However, the new Act does not indicate clearly to what extent it replaces the common law. Corporate Law For Commerce Students is thus a much-needed guide to the structure and fundamentals of the new company regime. Corporate Law For Commerce Students covers three types of business venture, namely partnerships, companies and close corporations, which each carry different rights and obligations, and ultimately liabilities, for the entrepreneur. It discusses, inter alia, how to choose the right option for a specific business; the partnership concept, the establishment of a legal personality; compliance, transparency and accountability; shares, securities, stock and debt instruments; fundamental transactions, takeovers and offers; business rescue and compromise with creditors; and termination and dissolution - all within the framework of the new Companies Act and the common law. It includes figures, tables and mind maps to clarify each topic, and provides assessments at the end of each chapter. Corporate Law For Commerce Students is aimed both at students who are studying Commercial Law, Business Entities or Corporate Law and practising accountants and auditors.

Recently voices have been heard saying that the Bible is not literally God's word, but rather the word of God in ordinary Human language. Sometimes people say that the Bible is nothing more than words about God. Izak Spangenberg attempts to formulate a contemporary perspective on the Bible. He shows that the Bible is a book that can greatly assist us in our reflections on God and in our quest for meaning in life. If we use it wisely, it can indeed serve as a guide. Essentially, however, in the author's opinion, the Bible is not intended as a book of law with which we are to judge other people. |
