(BH Large Choral). (2004, 55 minutes) Karl Jenkins' Requiem sets the traditional Latin text of the Requiem mass, including the extra movements included by Faure and Durufle Pie Jesu and In paradisum . These are interspersed with haiku "death" poems (sung in Japanese) whose delicate, epigrammatic texts provide a peaceful commentary on the liturgical words. The result is a deeply moving expression of spirituality, whose musical tying together of different cultures provides a link that is highly appropriate to the modern world. This powerful book will appeal to choirs wanting to sing an unusual but appealing and effective piece: the full scoring of the work includes a part for Japanese flute (shakuhachi) and an array of unusual drums.

Exploring Bach's B-minor Mass (Paperback): Yo Tomita, Robin A Leaver, Jan Smaczny Exploring Bach's B-minor Mass (Paperback)
Yo Tomita, Robin A Leaver, Jan Smaczny
R935 Discovery Miles 9 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The B-minor Mass has always represented a fascinating challenge to musical scholarship. Composed over the course of Johann Sebastian Bach's life, it is considered by many to be the composer's greatest and most complex work. The fourteen essays assembled in this volume originate from the International Symposium 'Understanding Bach's B-minor mass' at which scholars from eighteen countries gathered to debate the latest topics in the field. In revised and updated form, they comprise a thorough and systematic study of Bach's Opus Ultimum, including a wide range of discussions relating to the Mass's historical background and contexts, structure and proportion, sources and editions, and the reception of the work in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the light of important new developments in the study of the piece, this collection demonstrates the innovation and rigour for which Bach scholarship has become known.

Ever since its premiere in 1994, Thomas Ades' first string quartet, Arcadiana has been captivating audiences with its evocations of vanishing, vanished, and imaginary idylls. Of all the work's movements it is O Albion that has most captured the imagination of listeners: seventeen sighing, devotissimo bars that, in only three minutes, conjure a whole emotional world. This arrangement for SSAATTBB voices was created by Jim Clements for vocal group Voces8, who recorded it for Decca in 2018. It sets a line from William Blake's Visions of the Daughters of Albion: 'The Daughters of Albion hear her woes, and echo back her sighs.' A piano part is included for rehearsal.

Parlar cantando - The practice of reciting verses in Italy from 1300 to 1600 (Hardcover, New edition): Elena Abramov-Van Rijk Parlar cantando - The practice of reciting verses in Italy from 1300 to 1600 (Hardcover, New edition)
Elena Abramov-Van Rijk
R2,356 Discovery Miles 23 560 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is a pioneering attempt to explore the fascinating and hardly known realm of reciting poetry in medieval and Renaissance Italy. The study of more than 50 treatises on both music and poetry, as well as other literary sources and documents from the period between 1300 and 1600, highlights above all the practice of parlar cantando («speaking through singing - the term found in De li contrasti, a fourteenth-century treatise on poetry) as rooted in the art of reciting verses. Situating the practice of parlar cantando in the context of late medieval poetic delivery, the author sheds new light on the origin and history of late Renaissance opera style, which their inventors called stile recitativo, rappresentativo or, exactly, parlar cantando. The deepest roots of the Italian tradition of parlar cantando are thus revealed, and the cultural background of the birth of opera is reinterpreted and revisited from the much broader perspective of what appears to be the most important Italian mode of music making between the age of Dante and Petrarch and the beginning of Italian opera around 1600.

for women's chorus and piano. This cantata features sixteen highly-varied folk song settings, bound together in seasonal groupings to take the listener on an engaging journey through the year from Spring to Winter. The prologue implores us to 'sing and be merry', and many of the songs facilitate this with their charmingly light-hearted melodies and imaginative orchestral accompaniment. There are also darker moments, such as the haunting and heart-rending setting of 'The Unquiet Grave' in 'Autumn'. For this comprehensive new edition, the editor Graham Parlett has drawn on all available sources, providing an authoritative full score with critical commentary. This edition also makes available new materials for the version for string orchestra and piano, and a new vocal score.

Arthur Sullivan - A Life of Divine Emollient (Hardcover): Ian Bradley Arthur Sullivan - A Life of Divine Emollient (Hardcover)
Ian Bradley
R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book charts the life of Arthur Sullivan-the best loved and most widely performed British composer in history. While he is best known for his comic opera collaborations with W. S. Gilbert, it was his substantial corpus of sacred music which meant most to him and for which he wanted to be remembered. His upbringing and training in church music, and his own religious beliefs, substantially affected both his compositions for the theatre and his more serious work, which included oratorios, cantatas, sacred ballads, liturgical pieces, and hymns. Focusing on the spiritual aspects of Sullivan's life-which included several years as a church organist, involvement in Freemasonry, and an undying attachment to Anglican church music-Ian Bradley uses hitherto undiscovered letters, diary entries, and other sources to reveal the important influences on his faith and his work. No saint and certainly no ascetic, he was a lover of life and enjoyed its pleasures to the full. At the same time, he had a rare spiritual sensitivity, a sincere Christian faith, and a unique ability to uplift through both his character and his music that can best be described as a quality of divine emollient.

Jane Dolby fell in love with a fisherman - the most dangerous peacetime occupation that exists - leading her to find a place in a traditional British world that many have forgotten. Jane was not expecting to fall in love, but she did with Colin, a local fisherman in her hometown. Then one day she faces the loss every fisherman's wife fears: the disappearance of her husband when his boat overturns at sea. Three days later, the boat is finally dredged up, without Colin. At the same time as Jane struggles with her grief, she must fight to keep a roof over her family's heads. With the help and kindness of friends and strangers, the fishing world rallies around one of their own and in time, Jane forms a plan to give something back to the community that has helped her. Jane brings together 40 women from fishing communities up and down the country to release a charity single, founding The Fishwives Choir, and gives a voice to women previously unheard. SONG OF THE SEA is the true story of one woman's love and loss, and after years in which grief stole her ability to sing, she finds her own voice again.

The Heart of Vocal Harmony - Emotional Expression in Group Singing (Paperback): Deke Sharon The Heart of Vocal Harmony - Emotional Expression in Group Singing (Paperback)
Deke Sharon
R586 Discovery Miles 5 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most choirs spend their rehearsal time focusing on notes, rhythms, and precision. They rarely, if ever, discuss a song s meaning and feeling, even though those elements are precisely what draws people to the music in the first place. Thousands of books have been written about choral technique, teaching people how to sing technically well. What sets The Heart of Vocal Harmony apart is its focus on honest unified expression and the process of delivering an emotionally compelling performance. It delves into an underdeveloped vocal topic the heart of the music and the process involved with expressing it. The Heart of Vocal Harmony is not just for a cappella groups it is also for vocal harmony groups, ensembles, and choirs at all levels, with or without instruments. In addition to the process, the book features discussions with some of the biggest luminaries in vocal harmony: composers, arrangers, directors, singers, and groups including Eric Whitacre, Pentatonix, the Manhattan Transfer, and more!

Sebanti Chatterjee
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Choral Voices: Ethnographic Imaginations of Sound and Sacrality is about sacred and secular choirs in Goa and Shillong across churches, seminaries, schools, auditoriums, classrooms, reality TV shows, and festivals. Voice and genre emerge as social objects annotated by tradition, nostalgia, and innovation. Piety literally and metaphorically shapes the Christian lifeworld, predominantly those belonging to the Presbyterian and Catholic denominations. Indigeneity structures the political and cultural motifs in the making of the Christian musical traditions. Located at the intersection of Sociology, Anthropology, and Ethnomusicology, the choral voices emplace 'affect' and the visual-aural dispatch. Thus, sonic spectrum holds space for indigenous and global musicality. This ethnographic work will be useful for scholars researching music and sound studies, religious studies, cultural anthropology, and sociology of India.

For the Time Being - A Christmas Oratorio (Hardcover, New): W.H Auden For the Time Being - A Christmas Oratorio (Hardcover, New)
W.H Auden; Edited by Alan Jacobs
R575 R471 Discovery Miles 4 710 Save R104 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"For the Time Being" is a pivotal book in the career of one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. W. H. Auden had recently moved to America, fallen in love with a young man to whom he considered himself married, rethought his entire poetic and intellectual equipment, and reclaimed the Christian faith of his childhood. Then, in short order, his relationship fell apart and his mother, to whom he was very close, died. In the midst of this period of personal crisis and intellectual remaking, he decided to write a poem about Christmas and to have it set to music by his friend Benjamin Britten. Applying for a Guggenheim grant, Auden explained that he understood the difficulty of writing something vivid and distinctive about that most cliched of subjects, but welcomed the challenge. In the end, the poem proved too long and complex to be set by Britten, but in it we have a remarkably ambitious and poetically rich attempt to see Christmas in double focus: as a moment in the history of the Roman Empire and of Judaism, and as an ever-new and always contemporary event for the believer. "For the Time Being" is Auden's only explicitly religious long poem, a technical tour de force, and a revelatory window into the poet's personal and intellectual development. This edition provides the most accurate text of the poem, a detailed introduction by Alan Jacobs that explains its themes and sets the poem in its proper contexts, and thorough annotations of its references and allusions."
