Seniors Housing (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Michael A. Anikeeff, Glenn Muller Seniors Housing (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Michael A. Anikeeff, Glenn Muller
R2,792 Discovery Miles 27 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Seniors housing improves the quality of life for an increasingly significant segment of the population. The number of people in the United States over sixty-five years of age is projected to double in the next thirty years, and the number of people aged eighty-five and over - the ones most in need of seniors housing - is projected to increase three-fold. The business implications of this demographic change are significant. This volume provides an introduction to seniors housing, and an industry analysis, with the ultimate goal of expediting needed investment. It provides information for industry analysts on product lines, complementary products, and substitute products. In addition, it examines buyers and their behavior; the growth potential of the industry; the growth patterns and determinants of growth; the economics of the different product types; and the market analysis techniques. Finally, an article on health care REITs and health care stocks investigates the performance of the larger players in the industry.

Women in the American Welfare Trap (Paperback, New): Catherine Kingfisher Women in the American Welfare Trap (Paperback, New)
Catherine Kingfisher
R799 Discovery Miles 7 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Women in the American Welfare Trap Catherine Kingfisher In the United States, a majority of the poor and those who work with the poor are women. Recipients of public assistance and the welfare workers who serve them are both trapped at the bottom of the American welfare system. How do they perceive their place in society? How do they assess their self-worth in the hierarchy of a bureaucratic system? In this ethnographic study of a welfare office and two welfare rights groups, Catherine Pelissier Kingfisher addresses these issues in a thought-provoking analysis, based on the women's conversations with each other. "Women in the American Welfare Trap" addresses a range of significant issues: policy formation and implementation, the role of men in women's economic lives, low-income women's beliefs and aspirations, and the possibilities for women cooperatively working to change the welfare system. Indeed, Kingfisher demonstrates that women who are often viewed as victims without control actively work within the confines of the system to exert their autonomy. 1996 224 pages ISBN 978-0-8122-1515-1 Paper $28.95s 19.00 World Rights Public Policy

Welfare Markets in Europe - The Democratic Challenge of European Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Amandine Crespy Welfare Markets in Europe - The Democratic Challenge of European Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Amandine Crespy
R3,004 Discovery Miles 30 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the European welfare model, arguing that the rollout of European policies for welfare services has led to increased marketization. The author argues that the rise of profit-making in utilities, transport, child and health care is exacerbating rather than reducing inequalities among citizens, demonstrating how the marketization of European welfare has taken place over successive rounds of policymaking for European integration. These rounds have motivated national level public services reform, as well as contestation over these measures from civil society groups. The study traces the developments of policymaking at EU level since the late 1980s, offers in-depth studies of contentious debates which have sealed the fate of welfare services at the turn of the century, and offers insights on the problems involved with prolonged austerity in Europe. This book therefore shows how European integration is provoking a democratic challenge to what kind of Europe citizens want.

Moral Authority, Ideology, And The Future Of American Social Welfare (Paperback): Andrew W. Dobelstein Moral Authority, Ideology, And The Future Of American Social Welfare (Paperback)
Andrew W. Dobelstein
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

American welfare policies and programs frustrate both conservative and liberal advocates who fail to realize that American welfare policy cannot be any more than, or any less than, the distinctly American framework in which it operates. "Moral Authority, Ideology, and the Future of American Social Welfare "departs from standard presentations of social welfare by dealing directly with the ideologies that have shaped the American experience and illustrates how the values these ideologies generate define the framework of American social welfare through existing economic, governmental, and social structures. By reviewing the ideological frameworks that have shaped the American experience, Andrew Dobelstein explains that we have tried to do much more with American social welfare policy than is possible in the present American system and that prudence suggests a reformation of American social welfare policy--which is not to do less but to do what we are capable of doing in a more effective way. This book suggests how welfare can be re-formed by taking the American ideological context as a road map for which welfare changes are possible and which are not, laying out a framework for welfare as America enters the twenty-first century.

Turning Points in Social Security - From 'Cruel Hoax' to 'Sacred Entitlement' (Hardcover): Sheryl R. Tynes Turning Points in Social Security - From 'Cruel Hoax' to 'Sacred Entitlement' (Hardcover)
Sheryl R. Tynes
R1,957 Discovery Miles 19 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work is a theoretically informed political history of the development of the U.S. Social Security system over more than five decades. When initiated in 1935, Social Security was a noteworthy experiment in social policy, and its endurance, inviolability, and taken-for-granted nature are evidence of its success. In this volume, the author analyzes key turning points in its history in order to provide an understanding of the various forces that led to this success. This book addresses several key questions: What were the important legislative turning points? What individuals or organizations were active in the social and political debates surrounding these turning points? Why were some of these organizational actors more successful than others in influencing policy outcomes, and what were the opportunities or constraints these organizations faced? A second major concern of the book is to explore the often contradictory interpretations of the relationship between the development of Social Security and the role of the state. The author's interpretation knits together insights from major sociological theories to fashion a dynamic explanation of the development of Social Security, one that acknowledges the economic, political, and cultural context and takes into account the importance of specific organizational and social movement actors. This theoretical framework permits an examination of the ways in which various groups influence political change.

From Rhetoric To Reform? - Welfare Policy In American Politics (Paperback): Anne Marie Cammisa From Rhetoric To Reform? - Welfare Policy In American Politics (Paperback)
Anne Marie Cammisa
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the American political process, this book explores why the debate on welfare policy has shifted to the conservatives' vantage point. The author discusses how political rhetoric shapes the welfare debate, and considers topics such as how welfare became a programme fraught with problems and abuses, and why and when welfare was the answer to a problem and when it became the problem. She reviews the response to caring for the less fortunate and examines welfare policy from the federal to the state level. A chapter is devoted to the 1996 Welfare Reform Bill and its impact on the states in 1997.

Women and Children in Health Care - An Unequal Majority (Paperback): Mary Briody Mahowald Women and Children in Health Care - An Unequal Majority (Paperback)
Mary Briody Mahowald
R1,464 R958 Discovery Miles 9 580 Save R506 (35%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The ideal of equality constitutes a criterion for assessing current practice through attention to differences among individuals and groups. Inequality occurs when irrelevant differences are invoked in order to secure power or advantages over others. This book examines health care issues from an egalitarian perspective, focusing particularly on those that affect the lives of women and children. These are some of the most hotly debated, controversial, yet genuinely humanitarian issues of our time. They include gender stereotypes in medicine and in adolescent socialization, fertility curtailment and enhancement, coercive treatment during pregnancy, fetal tissue transplantation, decisions regarding newborns, decision-making by minors, the feminization of poverty and its impact on women's and children's health, and the meaning and role of "family" in health care decisions. The book describes a case-based or "feminine" model of reasoning as appropriate to the health care setting, but also as a possible rationale for exploitation of women. Different versions of feminism are clearly explained and specifically related to care-based reasoning. To overcome the pitfalls of paternalism and excessive stress on patient autonomy, a concept of "parentalism" is defended. An egalitarian perspective, the author claims, involves use of one's power to empower others. Because of the timeliness of the topics discussed, and the depth of detail, this book will be necessary reading for all bioethicists, health-care analysts and policy-makers, and women's studies researchers.

The Economic Consequences of Immigration to Germany (Paperback, 1994 ed.): Gunter Steinmann, Ralf E. Ulrich The Economic Consequences of Immigration to Germany (Paperback, 1994 ed.)
Gunter Steinmann, Ralf E. Ulrich
R1,380 Discovery Miles 13 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume discusses some economic aspects of immigration with special refer ence to the case of Germany. Immigration has become a major issue in Germany. Germany still does not have an official immigration policy in spite of the fact that more than 8 percent of the residents are non-citizens and that Germany . s immigration figures almost have reached the US figures. The foreign Iabor supply strongly influences the German Iabor market. The bulk of foreign workers is employed in certain industries. In some industries (mining, steel) 20 and more percent of the employees are foreign workers. Most foreign workers are blue collar workers with low wages. The Iabor demand for immigrants has declined in the last 15 years while the foreign population and Iabor supply has increased. As a consequence, foreigners experience higher unemployment rates than Germans. The fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the communist regimes in East Europe further increased the blue collar Iabor supply and strengthened the competition for foreign workers on the German Iabor market."

The Cultures of Caregiving - Conflict and Common Ground among Families, Health Professionals, and Policy Makers (Hardcover,... The Cultures of Caregiving - Conflict and Common Ground among Families, Health Professionals, and Policy Makers (Hardcover, New)
Carol Levine, Thomas H. Murray; Foreword by Christine K. Cassel
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

As the population ages and the health care system focuses on cost-containment, family caregivers have become the frontline providers of most long-term and chronic care. Patient care at home falls mainly on untrained and unprepared family members, who struggle to adjust to the new roles, responsibilities, and expenses. Because the culture of family caregivers--their values, priorities, and relationships to the patient--often differs markedly from that of professionals, the result can be conflict and misunderstanding.

In "The Cultures of Caregiving," Carol Levine and Thomas Murray bring together accomplished physicians, nurses, social workers, and policy experts to examine the differences and conflicts (and sometimes common ground) between family caregivers and health care professionals--and to suggest ways to improve the situation. Topics addressed include family caregivers and the health care system; cultural diversity and family caregiving; the changing relationship between nurses, home care aides, and families; long-term health care policy; images of family caregivers in film; and the ethical dimensions of professional and family responsibilities. "The Cultures of Caregiving" provides needed answers in the contemporary crisis of family caregiving for a readership of professionals and students in medical ethics, health policy, and such fields as primary care, geriatrics, oncology, nursing, and social work.

This collection of original essays explores the myriad expressions of austerity since the 2008 financial crisis. Case studies drawn from Canada, Australia and the European Union provide extensive comparative analysis of fiscal consolidation and the varied political responses against austerity. Contributions examine such themes as privatization, class mobilization and resistance, the crisis of liberal democracy and the rise of the far right. The potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in shaping future austerity and alternatives is signalled. Given the rapidly shifting terrain, this comprehensive handbook provides important insights into a complex and fast-changing period of politics and policy.

Old Age Security in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover, New): John B. Williamson, Fred C Pampel Old Age Security in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover, New)
John B. Williamson, Fred C Pampel
R1,045 Discovery Miles 10 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines a central element of social welfare, old age security, exploring the history of policies in both developed and underdeveloped countries to assess their structure, ideology and effectiveness. The authors test five theoretical perspectives on old-age security policy in four industrial nations (the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany) and three developing countries (India, Nigeria, Brazil), challenging the view that old age policy is the outcome of class conflict between capital and labour. Instead, the authors adopt a neo-pluralist perspective which emphasizes the influence of ethnic religious and regional groups, as well as "the grey lobby", over that of class-based groups. The authors attempt to test ideas derived in part from these historical case studies by analysing quantitative data from a broader sample of countries (18 industrial nationa and 32 developing nations), and they use these results to anticipate future policy developments in the U.S.

This book is about tax and social policy and how they interact with each other. The impact of taxation as an instrument of social policy is central in influencing redistribution and behaviour. This broad-based edited collection fills a significant gap in both literatures, bringing together disparate debates in this emerging area of analysis. It guides readers through the key interactions of tax and social policies and the central debates and challenges posed by their effect on each other. It examines how analyses might be combined and policy options developed for more effective delivery and impact in both areas.

R1,969 Discovery Miles 19 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

National housing policy is the subject of ongoing debate, and this book brings together much of the current wisdom on the issues that lie at the center of the debate. This volume addresses a wide range of policy concerns, including: Who should receive limited federal housing resources? How and to what extent should we preserve the existing, private, subsidized, and public low income housing stock? What are the appropriate roles for the federal, state and local governments, the nonprofits and the private sector in delivering housing programs? This comprehensive study of housing policy in the U.S. is the result of the MIT Housing Policy Project (1987-1989), which was directed by the editors. The Project assembled leading scholars and practitioners from across the country, representing a wide range of perspectives, to assess the key policy issues of housing availability, affordability, and quality. As the national debate continues, Building Foundations offers clarification of a complex set of issues.

Crime Prevention Through Housing Design (Paperback): Paul Stollard Crime Prevention Through Housing Design (Paperback)
Paul Stollard
R2,776 Discovery Miles 27 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A consideration of the potential for reducing crime and improving community safety through housing design. It offers architects and planners an outline of the principles which should be used during the process of assessment, design and construction. The author contends that architects and planners should be designing to deter crime. Although it may not be possible to create a residential utopia, it should be possible to reduce the opportunities for crime and increase people's sense of security. However, designers must also be aware that attempted solutions to security problems do not have one single simple consequence. In fact some "solutions" may make matters worse. The use of "target-hardening" techniques such as security grilles and door reinforcements can create a "fortress" which may provoke more ingenious or violent attacks. At the same time it can lead to an increase in the social isolation felt by the residents and reduce the fragile community support networks which are also such an important defence against crime. Architects and planners, the authors upholds must aim for prevention rather than containment.

Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South's Debt (Hardcover): Ndongo Samba Sylla Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South's Debt (Hardcover)
Ndongo Samba Sylla
R2,465 Discovery Miles 24 650 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the nagging issue of the Global South's debt back into the spotlight. With declining export earnings and tax revenues, many countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia have found themselves objectively unable to service their foreign currency debt. This situation, reminiscent of the international debt crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, is the backdrop of the 38th volume of the Research in Political Economy series edited by Ndongo Samba Sylla. In Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South's Debt, expert contributions connect the history of this issue with a range of factors including class dynamics, the changing landscape of sovereign debt markets, the global liquidity cycle, the enduring constraints of commodity dependence, ecological sustainability and the limitations of the current ad hoc sovereign debt restructuring procedures. In contrast to orthodox accounts that view debt crises in the Global South as a cyclical problem or as consequences of 'mismanagement' or 'fiscal irresponsibility'. Imperialism and the Political Economy of Global South's Debt recognises the systemic nature of the Global South's external debt, revealed only further by the economic uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the need to analyse it in relation to existing imperialist structures.

The Welfare State Reader 3e (Paperback, 3rd Edition): C Pierson The Welfare State Reader 3e (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
C Pierson
R644 Discovery Miles 6 440 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The Welfare State Reader has established itself as a vital source of outstanding original research since its original appearance in 2000. In the third edition, Pierson, Castles and Naumann have comprehensively overhauled the content, bringing it wholly up to date with contemporary discussions about this most crucial area of social and political life. The book includes seventeen new selections, all reflecting the latest thinking and research in welfare state studies. These readings are organized around contemporary debates, such as the current trajectories of, constraints on and challenges to contemporary welfare regimes, as well as evolving ideas and emergent forms that constitute the future of welfare. In particular, new readings focus on issues such as ageing populations and low fertility, climate change and global financial uncertainty, and nascent 'politics of happiness'. As in previous editions, the volume begins with a collection of readings that provide a grounding in core approaches to welfare, and each section is set in context by a new editorial introduction. As well as bringing together classic debates, The Welfare State Reader represents an invaluable guide to what is happening at the cutting edge of welfare research, giving the reader an unrivalled overview of debates surrounding the welfare state.

The Formulation of Local Housing Strategies - A Critical Evaluation (Paperback): Chris Nicol The Formulation of Local Housing Strategies - A Critical Evaluation (Paperback)
Chris Nicol
R1,017 Discovery Miles 10 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Housing provision is a major dilemma for local authorities. There is currently a huge demand for more housing, while increasing environmental, economic and political pressures must be considered when local authorities develop their policies. This remarkable volume investigates how local authorities formulate their housing strategies. It questions whether the local authority can be seen as a single entity in terms of housing or whether it is fragmented into separate departments. Incorporating in-depth empirical research from England and Wales, the book discusses whether the process of developing housing policy and allocating land needs to be more integrated, and whether key players such as speculative house-builders should be involved in the development of policy. Analyzing which information sources influence the local authority's land allocations and housing strategies, the volume debates whether they provide the most useful data and suggests alternative information sources that may assist in better land allocation policies.

British Literature and the Life of Institutions - Speculative States (Hardcover): Benjamin Kohlmann British Literature and the Life of Institutions - Speculative States (Hardcover)
Benjamin Kohlmann
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

British Literature and the Life of Institutions charts a literary prehistory of the welfare state in Britain around 1900, but it also marks a major intervention in current theoretical debates about critique and the dialectical imagination. By placing literary studies in dialogue with political theory, philosophy, and the history of ideas, the book reclaims a substantive reformist language that we have ignored to our own loss. This reformist idiom made it possible to imagine the state as a speculative and aspirational idea-as a fully realized form of life rather than as an uninspiring ensemble of administrative procedures and bureaucratic processes. This volume traces the resonances of this idiom from the Victorian period to modernism, ranging from Mary Augusta Ward, George Gissing, and H. G. Wells, to Edward Carpenter, E. M. Forster, and Virginia Woolf. Compared to this reformist language, the economism that dominates current debates about the welfare state signals an impoverishment that is at once intellectual, cultural, and political. Critiquing the shortcomings of the welfare state comes naturally to us, but we often struggle to offer up convincing defences of its principles and aims. This book intervenes in these debates by urging a richer understanding of critique: if we want to defend the state, Kohlmann argues, we need to learn to think about it again.

Making a Life on Mean Welfare - Voices from Multicultural Sydney (Hardcover): Emma Mitchell Making a Life on Mean Welfare - Voices from Multicultural Sydney (Hardcover)
Emma Mitchell
R2,324 R2,018 Discovery Miles 20 180 Save R306 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

We are often told that mean welfare is what the public wants. Whether or not that's true, this book encourages us to at least be honest about what that entails. It explores how diverse welfare users navigate the personal and practical hurdles of Australia's so-called social security system, where benefits are deliberately meagre and come with strings attached. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a region of Sydney known for ethnic diversity and socio-economic disadvantage, Emma Mitchell brings her own experience of belonging to a poor family long reliant on welfare to her research. This book shows the different cultural resources that people bring to welfare encounters with a sensitivity and subtlety that are often missing in both sympathetic and cynical accounts of life on welfare.

Free Movement and Non-discrimination in an Unequal Union (Hardcover): Susanne Schmidt, Michael Blauberger, Dorte Martinsen Free Movement and Non-discrimination in an Unequal Union (Hardcover)
Susanne Schmidt, Michael Blauberger, Dorte Martinsen
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The European Union's (EU) fundamental principles on free movement of persons and non-discrimination have long challenged the traditional closure of the welfare state. Although EU-wide free movement and national welfare appeared largely unproblematic before Eastern enlargement, the increased differences among EU member states in economic development and welfare provision have resulted in fears about potential welfare migration. Because rights of EU citizens were shaped to an important extent by jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice, these are often not very clearly delineated, and easily politicised. This comprehensive volume shows the normative limits of a strict non-discriminatory approach to EU citizens' access to national welfare and analyses how the Court developed its jurisprudence, partly reacting to politicisation. Although, empirically, free movement negatively impacts national welfare only under extreme conditions, it is notable that member states have adjusted their social policies in reaction to EU jurisprudence and migration pressure alike. Their heterogeneous institutions of national welfare, administration and labour markets imply for member states that they face very different opportunities and challenges in view of intra-EU migration. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprises - Nordic Perspectives (Paperback): Linda Lundgaard Andersen, Malin Gawell, Roger... Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprises - Nordic Perspectives (Paperback)
Linda Lundgaard Andersen, Malin Gawell, Roger Spear
R1,506 Discovery Miles 15 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Migrant women stepping into ethnic catering; homeless men employed to take care of bees producing honey for sale; young people on the edge getting microcredit funding to start social businesses; or former criminals joining forces to create social and economic structures for an honest lifestyle. These initiatives capture the transformative power of social enterprise and might indicate how social enterprises have the potential to make a difference for people and societies. The Nordic countries represent an interesting case. Social enterprises and co-operatives played a significant part in paving the way for the Nordic solicaristic welfare state. As the welfare state grew, civil society organizations and co-operatives lost ground, to a certain extent. But in recent decades, the welfare state has been restructured and, simultaneously, the concepts social entrepreneurship and social enterprises have gained attention. The Nordic context, with extensive public welfare structures and a high degree of citizens' participation in public affairs, might affect the emergence of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises.

Medicare Prospective Payment and the Shaping of U.S. Health Care (Hardcover, annotated edition): Rick Mayes, Robert A. Berenson Medicare Prospective Payment and the Shaping of U.S. Health Care (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Rick Mayes, Robert A. Berenson
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This is the definitive work on Medicare's prospective payment system (PPS), which had its origins in the 1972 Social Security Amendments, was first applied to hospitals in 1983, and came to fruition with the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Drawing on interviews with more than sixty-five major policy makers, Rick Mayes and Robert A. Berenson explain how Medicare's innovative payment system triggered shifts in power away from the providers (hospitals and doctors) to the payers (government insurers and employers) and how providers have responded to encroachments on their professional and financial autonomy.

"An exhaustively researched and provocative tale of the politics behind how doctors and hospitals are paid in America -- and the roots of our health care morass." -- Atul Gawande, MacArthur Fellow, author of Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance

"Whether discussing the Social Security Amendments of 1972 or the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, Mayes and Berenson entertain readers with insider anecdotes about the ideological and practical battles government policymakers fought with powerful provider lobbies." -- New England Journal of Medicine

"This slender volume offers value on several dimensions. First, it is an explication of recent history that connects the dots from prospective payment to Medicare-based deficit reduction to cost shifting to managed care. By the same token, the story here serves as a bracing corrective to the mythology of market-based reform and the assumption that government's role in health is inescapably a negative one." -- Health Affairs

"A highly readable book that traces the history of Medicare prospective payment systems from their enactment in 1983until today." -- Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law

Rick Mayes, Ph.D., is an associate professor of public policy at the University of Richmond and a faculty research fellow at the Petris Center on Healthcare Markets and Consumer Welfare at the UC-Berkeley School of Public Health. He is the author of Universal Coverage: The Elusive Quest for National Health Insurance and the coauthor of Medicating Children: ADHD and Pediatric Mental Health. Robert A. Berenson, M.D., is a senior fellow at the Urban Institute and coauthor of The Managed Care Blues and How to Cure Them. From 1998 to 2000, he was in charge of Medicare payment policy and managed care contracting in the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).
