More Graded Studies for Saxophone Book One, by Paul Harris, brings
together saxophone study repertoire spanning the entire spectrum of
technique from the 19th Century onward, and provides a firm
foundation for progress. Featuring core studies alongside specially
composed pieces by Paul Harris, this comprehensive collection
applies the Simultaneous Learning approach to instrumental
technique. Book One begins at Elementary level and progresses to
Intermediate (approx. Grades 1-5). The studies are arranged in
order of increasing difficulty according to a carefully planned
technical progression, and each study comes with a list of
Simultaneous Learning musical ingredients for players to explore in
preparation for the music.
The Wind Band Music of Henry Cowell studies the compositions for
wind band by twentieth-century composer Henry Cowell, a significant
and prolific figure in American fine art music from 1914-1965. The
composer is noteworthy and controversial because of his radical
early works, his interest in non-Western musics, and his
retrogressive mature style-along with notoriety for his
imprisonment in San Quentin on a morals charge. Eleven chapters are
organized both topically and chronologically. An introduction,
conclusion, series of eight appendices, bibliography, and
discography complete this comprehensive study, along with an audio
playlist of representative works, hosted on the CMS website.
Harold Meek writes from a lifetime's experience playing the horn
(often first chair) in several of America's great orchestras,
notably the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He shares anecdotes and
insights about the joys and travails of playing under Fritz Reiner,
Otto Klemperer, Serge Koussevitzky, Charles Munch, and others. Meek
also brings together some important information about changes in
the instrument itself, including a little-known letter from the
great British horn virtuoso, Dennis Brain, about the virtues of
different makes of horn. A valuable section prints interpretively
challenging horn passages from over three dozen masterpieces,
ranging from Beethoven symphonies to Weber's Der Freischutz, and
evaluates the solutions offered in recordings by various prominent
conductors, from Leopold Stokowski, Sir Adrian Boult, George Szell,
and Herbert von Karajan to Carlo Maria Giulini, Neville Marriner,
Kurt Masur, and Christopher Hogwood.
In what is primarily an instructional book, Jack Brymer places the
instrument in the broad context of its role in the orchestra and in
chamber music, expressing stimulating and controversial views.
Perhaps his most original and valuable contribution is to be found
in the long section on acoustics, the down-to-earth section on the
practical clarinettist, and the illuminating passages on artistic
approach. Brymer writes for the teacher of the clarinet, as well as
for beginners and advanced players, and the unique appendix on the
clarinet repertoire is particularly comprehensive. Modern science
has revealed facets of the clarinet's harmonic structure previously
only dimly perceived, and the author points the way to a future
full of promise.
Firmly rooted in Paul Harris's Simultaneous Learning approach, this
new edition of Improve your sight-reading! Clarinet Grades 1-3 is
designed to help overcome all the stumbling blocks to successful
sight-reading. Step by step you will build up a complete picture of
each piece, firstly through rhythmic, melodic and technical
exercises, then by studying prepared pieces and finally `going
solo' with a series of meticulously graded sight-reading pieces.
This new edition of the best-selling Improve your sight-reading!
contains completely new material throughout and has been brought up
to date to match the latest ABRSM sight-reading criteria.

The Social Media Handbook explores how social media are changing
disciplinary understandings of the internet and our everyday lives.
In addition to person-to-person social networking services like
Facebook and Twitter, this volume considers a broad range of
networked information services that support in-depth social
interaction, community formation, and collaboration in the Web 2.0
era. Rather than considering social media in terms of specific
technologies, the chapters in this book engage topics across a
range of research, techniques, practices, culture and society, and
theories. These broader topics-including community, gender, fandom,
disability, and journalism-are entryways through which students and
faculty can explore ways of thinking about social media and find
new paradigms for analysis.

The Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra was composed in 1953-4 to
mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of the LSO and was
written for the orchestra's principal tuba player, Philip
Catelinet. It was the first major concerto to be written for the
instrument, and remains today the outstanding work of its kind.
This new edition is based on all extant sources and contains full
textual notes and a discussion of the editorial method. Notable
additions are the inclusion of two sets of phrasing for the
Romanza-one from the first publication, largely influenced by
Catelinet, and the other from Vaughan Williams's manuscript-and the
original cadenza to the first movement. The arrangement for tuba
and piano has been updated in light of the research carried out by
David Matthews, and all orchestral parts have been revised.
Encompasses every aspect of the saxophone, including its history,
the instrument, teaching and repertoire. The book also features
music examples and photographs.

resource for brass instruments found in school instrumental
programs. With thorough coverage of the most common brass
instruments - trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and

necessary for effective teaching. This includes terminology,
topics, and concepts associated with each specific instrument,
along with teaching suggestions that can be applied in the
classroom. Be sure to look to the back of the book for a "Practical
Tips" section, which discusses common technical faults and
corrections, common problems with sound (as well as their causes
and solutions to them), fingering charts, literature lists (study
materials, method books, and solos), as well as a list of
additional resources relevant to teaching brass instruments
(articles, websites, audio recordings). Without question, Wind Talk
for Brass stands alone as an invaluable resource for woodwinds!
Following his much-acclaimed The Baroque Clarinet and The Clarinet
in the Classical Period, Albert R. Rice now turns his signature
detailed attention to large clarinets - the clarinet d'amour, the
basset horn, the alto clarinet, bass and contra bass clarinets.
Each chapter is devoted to a specific instrument, and offers a
fascinating insider's look at its defining characteristics, a
comprehensive history of its evolution, meticulously-researched
information on its makers and aspects of construction, and a
thorough discussion of its music. Rice illustrates how the
introduction of large clarinets into chamber ensembles, wind bands,
and opera orchestras was the result of experiments meant to address
specific musical needs. Along the way, he brings to life the
musicians, virtuosi, soloists, and orchestral and band musicians,
as well as the instruments' makers and the composers from J. C.
Bach to Smetana who wrote for them.
Based on careful study of primary sources - musical compositions,
patents, memoirs and diaries, and unfettered access to historical
instruments themselves--Rice's expert presentation is nothing short
of exhaustive. From the Clarinet d'Amour to the Contrabass will
engage all who love the clarinet and its music.
