This is the history and adventures of the Rainwater and Peabody families; both comfortable, wealthy, sure of themselves and leaders of their time. Each respected the other until the Peabody's beautiful daughter, Sara, fell in love with the handsome half-Indian Jeremiah Rainwater. The timing, set before the Civil War, deals with many changes in this country and Jeremiah's quest to establish a legacy for his young son, William. The changes manifest themselves in lawlessness, murder, grief, new birth and love as seen through the eyes of a father and son as they experience all the emotions involved while traveling over the white man's "Trail of Tears."
