General Edward Porter Alexander was the master gunner of the
Confederacy, and one of the great American artillerists. He wrote
two books: a personal memoir intended for his children, Fighting
for the Confederacy, and this book Military Memoirs of a
Confederate which was first published in 1907. Unlike Fighting for
the Confederacy, which was based largely on Alexander's own
recollections, Military Memoirs relies on a vast amount of research
to present a balanced picture of the Civil War.
