The enthusiastic reception by students, scholars, and the general
public to the 1988 publication of the Schomburg Library of
Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers more than justified the
efforts of twenty-five scholars and the staff of the Black
Periodical Literature Project to piece together the fragments of
knowledge about the writings of African-American women between 1773
and 1910. The Library's republication of those writings in thirty
volumes-ranging from the poetry of Phillis Wheatley to the enormous
body of work that emerged out of the 'Black Woman's Era' at the
turn of this century-was a beginning for the restoration of the
written sensibilities of a group of writers who confronted the twin
barriers of racism and sexism in America.
