Revenant: one who has returned from death. This is a revised
reprint of the classic Gothic horror tale, originally published in
1983. Spanning more than 100 years, this is the first-person
narrative of John Richard Le Perrowne from his birth in 1830. A
manuscript, discovered in an old black leather bag beside the
gutted ruins of a deserted house which had mysteriously burnt to
the ground, tells of his origins as a sickly child isolated from
the rest of the world in his Cornwall home. Visited from the age of
12 by a recurring dream in which a demonic, shadowy being beckons
to him, John finally encounters his beautiful and mysterious
ancestor, Helena, who becomes his teacher and his love, initiating
him into the ways of vampirism. But whereas most vampires regard
humans as simply prey, Helena teaches restraint, taking only
sufficient blood from her victims to sustain her unnatural life and
no more. At first John tries to follow her example, but eventually
he is seduced by the thrill of the hunt and becomes a killer. His
actions bring terrible retribution to Helena, which, in turn, leads
John to take revenge by transforming the wild and lustful Elizabeth
into a vampire like himself. Shocked and appalled by her excesses,
John retreats to his family home once more and there begins the
search for the Master Revenant, the first of his kind and the
father to all other revenants. Those who love Gothic horror will
find all the staple ingredients here: mysterious portraits in the
attic; a visit to the family tomb; strange dreams; and a central
character who is as tortured a soul as you could wish to meet. You
will also encounter some subtle shading of the better-known aspects
of vampire lore that makes this a superb updating of the classic
traditions. Best read at night with the lights on. (Kirkus UK)
A welcome return in a revised edition of Geoffrey Farrington's
masterpiece of classic Gothic horror. A family curse reaches
through time to damn a young man in Victorian Cornwall.
