Against the background of current differences of opinion in the
research on scripta, the present study aims to integrate the
language-variety perspective into their empirical study. The
'historical language variety' approach developed specially for this
study is demonstrated with reference to Old French negation and
noun inflection in 179 original Luxembourgeois documents. The
analyses show that the linguistic varieties manifesting themselves
in the texts correlate not only with geographic but also with
socio-cultural factors.
