A few days ago I received an order placed for An Introduction to Sociolinguistics 6th edition by Holmes and Watson. This is the latest incarnation of a textbook which has been a standard in the field for roughly 30 years. Its principal audience is no doubt undergraduate university students wishing to study sociolinguistics and perhaps applied linguistics more generally, but I bought it because some of the topics seemed to me of potential use for those teaching A Level English language, as I do. Part of the A level syllabus deals with issues related to language and identity and the material on multilingual communities, language shift and language death language change, gender, age and ethnicity are all of relevance in this regard. New material on social media and the online use of language have updated the book even by comparison with the previous edition and enhanced its relevance also for the A level syllabus module on language change. This edition also has a companion website with video and audio materials that will be of undoubted interest to students. It did not exist for my much older previous edition and is a useful and timely pedagogical edition. I have not had the opportunity as yet to go through all its 700+pages, but I have already seen enough to know that the book retains all its usefulness both for is primary audience of undergraduates and their teachers while nonetheless having much to make it useful for those teaching A level students.., particularly because the authors write clearly and have an ability to render technical terminology accessible. Recommend with great enthusiasm for any who are interested in the subject and/or have relevant professional needs.
