This book examines how classical texts and ideas have been received and their effect on culture and politics. It begins by comparing the scope and methods of the 'classical tradition' and 'reception studies' . A chapter on the diversity of reception within antiquity introduces key descriptive and evaluative concepts and sets out the two-pronged approach adopted in the rest of the book. These approaches focus on the appropriation and refiguring of classical material in modern drama, poetry and film and on the artistic and political contexts in which this has taken place. The concluding chapter draws these themes together and examines the role of classical material as a catalyst for cultural and political change.
