Polysemy and polyfunctionality are key components in the
motivational structure of discourse markers. In this study the
author investigates adjectival units that contribute to discourse
formation in the spoken Spanish of Chile. The author shows that
polyfunctionality drives not only polysemy but also
grammaticalization. This grammaticalization is examined by the
author in the field of tension between oral and written traditions.
