Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this
profound rite-of-passage not as a medical event but as an act of
self-discovery. Exercises and activities such as journal writing,
meditation, and painting will help mothers analyze their thoughts
and face their fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the
book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without
drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife's role, and a look at
the father's responsibilities. Childbirth education should also
include what to expect after the baby is born. Here are baby
basics, such as how to bathe a newborn, how to get the little one
to sleep, and tips for getting nursing off to a good start.
Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a process of continuous
learning and adjustment; "Birthing From Within" provides the
necessary support and education to make each phase of birthing a
rewarding experience.

This book is very different to your average "pregnancy" book. Instead of going into the physiology of pregnancy and childbirth (such as dealing with morning sickness etc) it looks at the psychological side of being pregnant, facing the process of labour and the effects of becoming parents on a relationship.
This book is especially helpful to those who have either had a previous bad experience in childbirth or would like to have a natural labour and birth but are worried about coping with the pain etc. It is becoming better understood how a womans state of mind and attitude towards childbirth can strongly effect the outcome and this book helps one to discover exactly what your fears are (through various exercises) and face them head on. It also helps you to develop a positive attitude and to be accepting of whatever the outcome may be (as it's not something you have complete control over).
There are also stories of other woman who have used the exercises mentioned in the book and what they discovered about thier feelings towards childbirth as well as how they did or didn't change them and what the eventual outcome was.
I would highly recommend this book to every woman who is having a baby or works as a Doula or Midwife. If you are looking for an additional book which covers the more "medical" aspects of pregnancy and childbirth then try Sheila Kitzinger's "The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth".
