describes the underlying physical terrain and covers the various
transformations humans have made to it: site selection, settlement,
urbanization, population, expansion, drainage, protection,
exploitation, devastation, and recovery. What New Orleans has
experienced foretells what similar cities will be tackling in years
to come.
