Africa is home to more than the Cradle of Humankind. It was the core of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea, and comprises some of the oldest and most extraordinary geology on planet Earth.

This detailed and colourful book features 44 of the continent's most spectacular and interesting 'geosites', from Table Mountain in the south to the eroded necks and plugs of the Hoggar region in Algeria; and from the volcanic islands of the Atlantic Ocean to the continental fragments off the African east coast. Each site is authored by a geologist (or specialist in a related field) with in-depth knowledge about the particular feature or landform: how it formed and developed, its current geological status, ecological impact, and its archaeological and cultural interest.

Supported with many photographs, maps, satellite images and explanatory illustrations, the text is accessible to geologists and lay enthusiasts alike, unpacking the hows and whys of Africa's most intriguing landforms, sites and geological features.

First of its kind covering the whole of Africa

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 | Review by: sarien L.

Let me first declare my interest - I made a tiny contribution to this book. All the authors that contributed made it absolutely voluntary without any remuneration. It is a work of love for our fantastic continent. It was published as part of the International Geological Congress held this year (2016) in Cape Town - only the 3rd time that this conference is hosted in Africa. The book provides an introduction in the geology of Africa and this is important for the laymen. The book is beautifully illustrated with mostly photo's from the authors private records. The editors did an excellent job of combining the range of styles into a standard format and easy to read work. This book make you want to travel to off the beaten track destinations but also to revisit more icon places to have a better understanding of what you are actually looking at. Pity more sites could not have been included. Also pity only available in paperback as it would have made an excellent hard cover coffee table book. The joy of this book is that it not only cover the geological features but a certain emphasis was on geoheritage which include the heritage components of the sites described.
