Ironically, the best Edinburgh novel ever written purports to be set in London. Stevenson based his tale on the real-life Deacon Brodie (one of Miss Jean Brodie's ancestors), who was a gentleman by day and a villain by night. It's a classic story, enlivened by a complex narrative structure which gives several separate points of view. In attempting to rewrite this book for the 1980s, I accidently wrote my first Inspector Rebus novel. For which, to Stevenson, I'm much obliged. (Kirkus UK)
