It covers both Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe and connects the formation of national identity to ethnic, religious, class and gender identities. It allows vantage points on why particular national narratives were more successful than others. It also highlights both similarities and differences in the construction of national histories across Europe.This volume asks which national histories underpinned which national identity constructions in almost every nation state in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
