Le vicende storiche dalla dittatura di Mussolini fino allo scoppio e termine della II Guerra Mondiale con i primi anni della ricostruzione postbellica fanno da macrosfondo al rapporto d'amicizia epistolare tra due intellettuali italiani emigrati negli Stati Uniti, Giuseppe Antonio Borgese (1882-1952) e Giorgio La Piana (1878-1971). Due siciliani in terra americana: da una parte il celebre autore di Rube (1921), primo allievo di Croce, strenuo oppositore del fascismo; dall'altra un prete modernista, docente di storia della Chiesa ad Harvard, che si prodiga per integrare Borgese nel sistema americano. In un ampio arco temporale (1932-1952) si racconta l'esilio americano di Borgese, il suo interesse per la situazione politica italiana ed europea, per le vicende culturali e le sorti degli intellettuali contrari al regime.
