The Open Economy and the Environment - Development, Trade and Resources in Asia (Hardcover): Ian Coxhead, Sisira Jayasuriya The Open Economy and the Environment - Development, Trade and Resources in Asia (Hardcover)
Ian Coxhead, Sisira Jayasuriya
R3,214 Discovery Miles 32 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Deforestation and agricultural land degradation are major problems in developing countries. While they have attracted much attention, most analyses and policy recommendations examine them in isolation from their broader economic and policy setting. This path breaking and timely book takes an economy-wide approach to the analysis of developing-country resource degradation problems. The Open Economy and the Environment asks what globalization means for environmental quality and the use of natural resources in developing economies. The authors develop theoretical models that trace the effects of trade and trade liberalization on sectoral resource allocation, factor returns, income and welfare, as well as incentives to clear forest and degrade agricultural land. The models reflect important developing economy features including spatial distinctions between uplands and lowlands, open-access forest resources and the special features of domestic food markets. The authors also analyze representative economy submodels, explore empirical cases based on applied general equilibrium models of Asian economies, and examine welfare and environmental implications of migration, trade liberalization and development policy. Researchers and graduate educators in agricultural, development, environmental and international economics, will find the core subject matter of this book of great interest, as will economists specializing in Asian economies.

Mark Beeson, Kanishka Jayasuriya, Hyuk-Rae Kim, Richard Robison
R4,466 Discovery Miles 44 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fallout from the crisis in Asia has been immense. Asia's position as the global economy's growth engine is now no longer tenable. As the political and economic regimes that defined "Asian capitalism" struggle to survive, it is by no means clear that free markets, transparent and accountable systems of governance and more vigorous civil societies will follow. The contributors to this book argue that processes of globalization are driven by complex political forces and that it is not enough to look at economic factors in isolation. Chapters focus on the different political and market institutions being forged in the wake of the crisis: from the highly ordered responses of China and Singapore to the chaos and disintergration in Indonesia; from the money politics of Thailand to the developmentalist juggernauts of Korea. They put the crisis in its global context, reassessing its impact on the configurations of power and interest shaping global markets and analyzing the major Western economies.

Children, Human Rights and Temporary Labour Migration - Protecting the Child-Parent Relationship (Paperback): Rasika Jayasuriya Children, Human Rights and Temporary Labour Migration - Protecting the Child-Parent Relationship (Paperback)
Rasika Jayasuriya
R1,244 Discovery Miles 12 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on the neglected yet critical issue of how the global migration of millions of parents as low-waged migrant workers impacts the rights of their children under international human rights law. The work provides a systematic analysis and critique of how the restrictive features of policies governing temporary labour migration interfere with provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child that protect the child-parent relationship and parental role in children's lives. Combining social and legal research, it identifies both potential harms to children's well-being caused by prolonged child-parent separation and State duties to protect this relationship, which is deliberately disrupted by temporary labour migration policies. The book boldly argues that States benefitting from the labour of migrant workers share responsibility under international human rights law to mitigate harms to the children of these workers, including by supporting effective measures to maintain transnational child-parent relationships. It identifies measures to incorporate children's best interests into temporary labour migration policies, offering ways to reduce interferences with children's family rights. This book fills a gap that emerges at the intersection of child rights studies, migration research and existing literature on the purported nexus between labour migration and international development. It will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policymakers working in these areas. The Asian Tsunami - Aid and Reconstruction after a Disaster (Hardcover): Sisira Jayasuriya, Peter McCawley The Asian Tsunami - Aid and Reconstruction after a Disaster (Hardcover)
Sisira Jayasuriya, Peter McCawley
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The 2004 Asian tsunami was the greatest natural disaster in recent times. Almost 230 000 people died. In response, governments in Asia and the broader international community announced large aid programs. The resulting assistance effort was one of the largest humanitarian programs ever organized in the developing world. This book discusses the lessons of the aid effort for disaster protection policy in developing countries. How effective was the aid? What lessons can be learnt about how to respond when disasters strike in poor countries? This insightful book addresses these questions drawing on three themes of current development policy: international aid policy; human security and the poor; and approaches to disaster risk reduction. The most important lesson is the need to `go local' in building up resilience at the grassroots level in poor countries in Asia. Other lessons include the need for better cooperation between the international community and local and national organizations as well as the need to ensure that adequate funding is provided to support disaster protection and post-disaster recovery programs while taking into account cost inflation associated with large-scale reconstruction efforts. This analysis draws on the views of local contributors from the countries most affected by the disaster. Analysts and administrators involved in disaster response activities from international organizations, NGOs and national governments will find this a unique and important resource for their forward planning. The book will also prove to be invaluable for academics and students studying disaster management and human security, international aid policy, international relations and Asian economic issues.

Reconstituting the Global Liberal Order - Legitimacy, Regulation and Security (Paperback): Kanishka Jayasuriya Reconstituting the Global Liberal Order - Legitimacy, Regulation and Security (Paperback)
Kanishka Jayasuriya
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The events of September 11, 2001 were a significant watershed in the emerging global order. However, the nature and consequences of this changing global order remain unclear.

This book argues that this new order is as much the result of issues relating to the evolving methods and forms of governance, as of the new role and position of the United States in the world system. Using an innovative framework, derived from the work of Carl Schmitt, Kanishka Jayasuriya explores the nexus between domestic political and constitutional structures and the global order, and examines how the post-war framework of international liberalism is crumbling under the new pressures of globalization. As well as looking at the implications of 9/11 for the global order, this new study:

  • relates the events of 9/11 to the deep transformations of the post war global order
  • emphasizes the importance of the rise of the new regulatory state
  • examines the new politics of fear in liberal democracies including the US, UK and Australia
  • studies the appropriation of the 'language of the left' by conservative forces
  • explores the illiberal outcomes of actions undertaken in the name of liberalism.

This unique and timely study will be of great interest to students and researchers of international political economy, globalization and international political theory.

Reconstituting the Global Liberal Order - Legitimacy, Regulation and Security (Hardcover): Kanishka Jayasuriya Reconstituting the Global Liberal Order - Legitimacy, Regulation and Security (Hardcover)
Kanishka Jayasuriya
R4,137 Discovery Miles 41 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The events of September 11 have been a significant watershed in the emerging global order. The nature and consequences of this changing global order, however, remain unclear.
This book argues that this emerging order is as much the result of issues relating to the evolving methods and forms of governance, as of the new role and position of the United States in the world system. Jayasuriya develops an innovative framework extending that extends the work of theorists such as Carl Schmitt, Franz Neumann and Herbert Marcuse to explore the reconstitution of the post-war global liberal order. He analyses the nexus between domestic political and constitutional structures and the global order, and examines how the post-war framework of international liberalism is crumbling under the economic and political pressures fermented in the post cold war period. As well as looking at the implications of 9/11 for the global order, the author:
* Relates the events of 9/11 to the deep transformations of the post-war global order.
* Emphasizes the importance of the rise of the new regulatory state.
* Examines the new politics of fear in liberal democracies including the US, UK and Australia .
* Studies the appropriation of the "language of the left" by conservative forces.
* Notes the profoundly illiberal outcomes of actions undertaken in the name of liberalism.
This unique and timely study will interest students and researchers of international political economy, globalization, and international political theory.

Asian Regional Governance - Crisis and Change (Hardcover): Kanishka Jayasuriya Asian Regional Governance - Crisis and Change (Hardcover)
Kanishka Jayasuriya
R4,264 Discovery Miles 42 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the wake of the Asian economic crisis the APEC-led process of regional integration and trade liberalization has been found wanting. Increasingly regional political leaders and domestic groups are searching for new forms of regional governance, from 'East Asian' regional grouping to the proliferation of new bilateral trade agreements.
This book looks at the changing global and domestic political economies shaping the new regionalism in Asia and examines the relationship between regional domestic, political and economic structures and forms of regional governance. Focusing on contemporary factors such as; the impact of globalization on Asian regionalism, new security challenges, monetary cooperation, sovereignty, democratization, industry policy and china's engagement with Southeast Asia, this book suggests that both the theory and practice of regionalism need to be radically revised in order to make the process applicable to the twenty first century.
With contributions from distinguished academics in the field who provide an overview of the conceptual foundations of regional governance, this book will be an indispensable resource for all who want to understand the emerging dynamics of regionalism in the Asia-Pacific.

Mark Beeson, Kanishka Jayasuriya, Hyuk-Rae Kim, Richard Robison
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a challenging volume by distinguished, leading scholars of East Asian political economy; it provides a distinct alternative to simplistic accounts of the Asian crisis which generally swing between an emphasis on convergence imposed by global economic forces, and the resurrection of the special patterns of East Asian economic governance. The authors argue that global forces and domestic structures are engendering new forms of economic and political regulation in East Asia. While these signal the death knell of the developmental state, this in itself does not presuppose a convergence towards a standard model of global capitalism. The arguments in this book will contribute significantly to the construction of a new research agenda for comparative political economy at the dawn of a new century.
Politics and Markets in the Wake of the Asian Crisis covers a range of East Asian countries including the People's Republic of China, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. All the studies are linked together by a common endeavour to explore the dynamic interaction between global economic forces and domestic structures. The book is at the cutting edge of the study of East Asian political economy, and is distinguished by the attention it pays to the regional and international context of the crisis. It also contains theoretically sophisticated analyses of organisations such as APEC and the IMF.

Sisira Jayasuriya, Donald MacLaren, Gary Magee
R3,352 Discovery Miles 33 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Presenting a blend of economics and law, this book provides unique insights as well as practical guidance for negotiators considering major issues on the agendas of bilateral and regional preferential trading agreements (PTAs). PTAs are currently proliferating. However, the existing economics literature provides little guidance for trade negotiators and analysts grappling with complex technical problems when negotiating PTAs. The authors use the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement as an illustrative case study to provide concrete insights into the political economy roots of disagreements and conflicts, and discuss the pros and cons of alternative formulations and approaches. This informative and insightful book would appeal to academic analysts, particularly those interested in the economic and legal aspects of international trade, and to those involved in negotiating international trade agreements. It would also be of great interest to trade negotiators and trade policy makers.

Statecraft, Welfare and the Politics of Inclusion (Hardcover, New): K. Jayasuriya Statecraft, Welfare and the Politics of Inclusion (Hardcover, New)
K. Jayasuriya
R1,542 Discovery Miles 15 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jayasuriya explores the dynamics of a new social agenda conceived within the boundaries of neo liberalism. The enhanced focus on issues such as poverty through strategies of inclusion, and frames new terms of engagement for social policy, different from that which existed in the terrain of the post war welfare state. The author argues that this represents a form of neo liberal sociability built around a diverse complex of welfare reform extending from the advanced industrial states to East Asia, all of which creates a new social contract within a market model.

Towards Illiberal Democracy (Hardcover): D. Bell, D. Brown, K. Jayasuriya, D. Jones Towards Illiberal Democracy (Hardcover)
D. Bell, D. Brown, K. Jayasuriya, D. Jones
R2,949 Discovery Miles 29 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book challenges the view that liberal democracy is the inevitable outcome of economic modernization. Focusing on the stable and prosperous societies of Pacific Asia, it argues that contemporary political arrangements are legitimised by the values of hierarchy, familism and harmony. An arrangement that clearly contrasts with a western understanding of political liberalism and the communicatory democracy it facilitates. Instead of political change resulting from a demand for autonomy by interest groups in civil society, the adoption of democratic practice in Asia ought to be viewed primarily as a state strategy to manage socio-economic change.

Dushni Weerakoon, Sisira Jayasuriya
R1,811 Discovery Miles 18 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book draws lessons from the story of Sri Lanka's post-conflict development in the context of a struggle for socio-political reconciliation, a turbulent world economy, and difficult internal and external political challenges. Heightened volatility in the global economy and intensifying geopolitical rivalries pose complex policy challenges for small countries embarking on post-conflict daunting challenges. To sustain peace, development needed to be broad based and inclusive. It needed to rapidly reconstruct war-devastated regions, restore macroeconomic stability, while delivering a 'peace dividend'. The book contains contributions that highlight Sri Lanka's endeavours of coping with adverse shocks, while exploiting new opportunities. It showcases how the island country had to attract capital and assistance, and support of the international community, including that of the rising Asian giants - China and India. Addressing the post-conflict challenges of sourcing development finance in a new global financial and political landscape, the book would be of interest to researchers working on post-conflict development in the context of a volatile global economy and changing aid architecture, and would also act as an important resource for policy makers.
