Building on a trans-disciplinary, feminist project that foregrounds
the bodies of those at the 'sharp end' of various forms of
international activity, such as immigration, development and
warfare, the chapters included in this book cover a variety of
sites, concerns, and hopes. These range from the fraught
geopolitics of marriage and birth in Ladakh, India, to the fate of
detained migrant children in the U.S., and from the human rights
abuses of women and children in Uzbekistan to the body politics of
aid workers in Afghanistan. The collective aim is to expose the
force relations that operate through and upon those bodies, such
that particular subjectivities are enhanced, constrained, and put
to work, and particular corporealities are violated, exploited, and
often abandoned. Oriented around issues of security, population,
territory, and nationalism, these chapters expose the proliferating
bodies of geopolitics, not simply as the bearers of socially
demarcated borders and boundaries, but as vulnerable
corporealities, seeking to negotiate and transform the geopolitics
they both animate and inhabit. This book was originally published
as a special issue of Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of
Feminist Geography.
"The experience of each one of us is the treasure of all. " Gerard
de Nerval In 1952, J. L. Lortat-Jacob [2] reported the first
programmed right hepatectomy, which had been carried out for a
hepatic metastasis of colorectal origin. Today, excisional surgery
of the liver has become a routine procedure, with a low mortality
and morbi dity. The varieties of excision have increased and been
modified in accordance with the site and number of lesions to be
treated. These advances notably stem from both the work on the
segmental anatomy of the liver by Couinaud [1] and that of Ton That
Tung [3], which have opened the way to a simplified and segmental
method of hepa tic resection that is both safe and reliable. This
progress has been greatly facilitated by a better knowledge of the
effects of vascular clamping of the liver, and by the intro duction
of new techniques including per-operative ultrasound, the
ultrasonic dissector and the argon coagulator. Improvements in
anresthesia have also contributed to the safety of these
procedures. The high incidence of colorectal cancer (the second
commonest cause of cancer death in France) and the frequent
occurrence of hepatic metastases from this tumour, more than
justify the search for an effective therapeutic management pro
tocol. The important place of surgical resection, the technical
advances outlined above, and the prospect of new treatment
modalities using adjuvant therapy, are additional reasons for
preparing a report on this subject.
Saponins are glycosides of triterpenes, steroids or steroidal
alkaloids. They can be found in plants and marine organisms. Very
diverse biological activities are ascribed to saponins and they
play important roles in food, animal feedstuffs, and pharmaceutical
properties. This volume provides a selection of recent work on
saponins presented at a symposium in Pulawy, Poland, in 1999. Many
different aspects are treated: analysis, separation, biological
activities, relevant use in human and animal nutrition, and
ecological significance. This book will be of use to researchers
both in universities and industry.

Walter Benjamin Schriften (Bd. 1.).
Frankfurt a. M. (Suhrkamp Verlag) 1955.
The objectives of this project were to: 1) evaluate the present
geomorphic condition of the Washita River through the Battlefield;
2) evaluate the adjustment of the present channel to the prevailing
water and sediment supply to the channel, and how this adjustment
has changed through time; 3) evaluate the likelihood that a
modified channel similar to that which existed in 1868 could remain
in equilibrium with the present conditions of flow and sediment;
and 4) based on the findings of this study, develop conceptual
alternatives for achieving a stable channel form and functional
riparian system along distinct reaches of the river that are as
close to the historic conditions as possible.

This is the first comprehensive monograph to look in depth at
saponins. Saponins are glycosides of triterpenes, steroids or
steroid alkaloids which have a very wide distribution in plants and
some marine organisms. Their biological activity includes
haemolysis and fish poisoning, and the steroid saponins are
essential for the manufacture of oral contraceptives and sex
hormones. Saponins have also been exploited commercially as soap
substitutes and in several other industrial applications. This book
gives detailed information on the occurrence and distribution of
saponins, their structural types, isolation, analysis and structure
determination. Biological and pharmacological activities are
discussed, as are aspects of commercial and industrial use. The
volume provides a valuable source of data for the different classes
of compound and includes and extensive list of references.

"Making Worlds" brings together thirty-one distinguished feminist
activists, artists, and scholars to address a series of questions
that resonate with increasing urgency in our current global
environment: How is space imagined, represented, arranged, and
distributed? What are the lived consequences of these
configurations? And how are these questions affected by gender and
other socially constructed categories of "difference"--race,
ethnicity, sexuality, class, nationality? How are the symbolic
formations of place and space marked by cultural ideologies that
carry across into the places and spaces we inhabit, the boundaries
and institutions we maintain? In recent years these questions have
occasioned intensifying debates, but they have seldom extended
beyond the boundaries of individual academic disciplines or crossed
the divide that has traditionally separated the academy from the
"outside" world. "Making Worlds" both questions and traverses those
divisions by combining personal essays, activist political
rhetoric, oral history, poetry, iconography, and performance art
with interdisciplinary academic discourses. Representing a wide
range of perspectives, "Making Worlds" develops a provocative
conversation about gender and spatiality in the interwoven symbolic
and material environments we create. The contributors engage such
issues as the body as site of symbolic action, fabrication, and
desire; the place and play of sexualities; the cultural
implications of everyday life--home, travel, work, childbirth,
food, disease, and death; technology and mass media; surveillance,
confinement, and the law; the dynamics of race and ethnicity;
imperialism, oppression, and resistance; the politics ofurban
spaces; landscape and cultural memory; the experience of time; and
the nature of "Nature." For students and scholars in cultural
studies, geography, literary criticism, anthropology, history, and
women's studies, it offers new ways of thinking about space, place,
and the spatial contexts of social thought and action.
