The Contributions to the Sociology of Language series features
publications dealing with sociolinguistic theory, methods, findings
and applications. It addresses the study of language in society in
its broadest sense, as a truly international and interdisciplinary
field in which various approaches - theoretical and empirical -
supplement and complement each other. The series invites the
attention of scholars interested in language in society from a
broad range of disciplines - anthropology, education, history,
linguistics, political science, and sociology. To discuss your book

Divided between two military alliances, Europe has maintained
stability based on political status quo and military power balance.
However, European states-including neutral and nonaligned
countries-have felt a need for a common policy to guarantee their
security, and the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe
(CSCE) was convened to address this concern. Ten years later, the
authors of this study find that the outlines of a European security
regime are indeed discernible. The conference in Helsinki initiated
efforts for negotiated and controlled change in Europe.
Contributors to this volume analyze the achievements of CSCE,
consider more recent models of collective or common security
systems, and deal with political and military processes at work in
Europe as well as relationships with great powers and the Third
World. The role of Western Europe, and particularly Finland's role
as an initiator of the CSCE process, receives special attention.
Documentation of the tenth anniversary meeting and the CSCE process
in general are also included.

Horror cinema is a genre that is undergoing constant evolution,
from the sub-genre of 'found footage' to post-cinematic new media
forms such as YouTube horror, horror video games and cinematic
virtual reality horror. By investigating how these new forms alter
the dynamics of spectatorship, this book charts how cinema's
affective capacities have shifted in relation to these
modifications in the forms of cinematic horror. It applies a rich
theoretical synthesis of phenomenological and Deleuzian approaches
to a number of case studies, including films like The Blair Witch
Project, Paranormal Activity and Creep as well as video games such
as Alien: Isolation.
This Element develops an analytical framework for understanding the
role of ideas in political life and communication. Power in Ideas
argues that the empirical study of ideas should combine
interpretive approaches to derive meaning and understand influence
with quantitative analysis to help determine the reach, spread, and
impact of ideas. This Element illustrates this approach through
three case studies: the idea of reparations in Ta-Nehisi Coates's
"The Case for Reparations," the idea of free expression in Mark
Zuckerberg's Facebook policy speech at Georgetown University, and
the idea of universal basic income in Andrew Yang's "Freedom
Dividend." Power in Ideas traces the landscapes and spheres within
which these ideas emerged and were articulated, the ways they were
encoded in discourse, the fields they traveled across, and how they
became powerful.
A biography of Ralph Vaughan Williams, published in collaboration
with the Bard Music Festival. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958)
was one of the most innovative and creative figures in
twentieth-century music, whose symphonies stand alongside those of
Sibelius, Nielsen, Shostakovich, and Roussel. After his death,
shifting priorities in the music world led to a period of critical
neglect. What could not have been foreseen is that by the second
decade of the twenty-first century, a handful of Vaughan
Williams’s scores would attain immense popularity worldwide. Yet
the present renown of these pieces has led to misapprehension about
the nature of Vaughan Williams’s cultural nationalism and a
distorted view of his international cultural and musical
significance. Vaughan Williams and His World traces the
composer’s stylistic and aesthetic development in a broadly
chronological fashion, reappraising Vaughan Williams’s music
composed during and after the Second World War and affirming his
status as an artist whose leftist political convictions pervaded
his life and music. This volume reclaims Vaughan Williams’s
deeply held progressive ethical and democratic convictions while
celebrating his achievements as a composer.

The Nobel Symposium on A Future Arms Control Agenda was organized by SIPRI to consider how arms control can contribute to creating a cooperative security system based on the peaceful resolution of disputes and the gradual demilitarization of international relations. The proceedings of the symposium include comprehensive discussions of the new normative and structural elements of the post-cold war global security system and the objectives and limits of arms control within that evolving system.
The subject of this book is Europe after the cold war. The European
security landscape has changed considerably. The period from
November 1989 to November 1990 can be compared with such decisive
dates in twentieth-century European history as 1918 and 1945.
Germany and Europe have entered a crucial period of transition.
While it was relatively easy to describe the dramatic events and
changes in the making, it is now more difficult to demonstrate
their mutual relationships within the framework of the new European
system emerging from them. The documents published in this volume -
many of them for the first time - provide an important record of
this historic period. Key papers by some of the leading German
politicians of this period, delivered at Potsdam in February 1990,
are also presented. The volume provides the background for a better
understanding of developments in Europe - particularly the role of
the new German state, to contribute to a sober assessment of the
role which the united Germany can play in an emerging new structure
for European security, and to facilitate further research on these
topics and related issues.
A Critical Companion to Steven Spielberg offers a comprehensive,
detailed study of the works of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg's early
productions stand as landmarks in contemporary cinema, and his
involvement with film spans all cinematic genres. Today, Spielberg
enjoys an immense and enduring popularity around the globe, and his
productions have attracted (and continue to attract) both public
and critical attention. This book investigates several distinct
areas of Spielberg's works and addresses the different approaches
and the range of topics invited by the multidimensionality of his
oeuvre. The eighteen chapters in this book use different
methodologies, offering a variegated and compelling picture of
Spielberg's films, from his earliest works such as Duel (1971) and
The Sugarland Express (1974) to his most recent productions, such
as The BFG (2016), The Post (2017), and Ready Player One (2018).
Now as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and
the western world. This publication provides an overview of its
many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples
and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions. The
publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely
independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on
Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki. Six essays by
European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into
the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making
cross-references to Japan's architectural history, and explaining
current lines of development. The book thus combines a
self-reflective approach with an outsider's analytical view.
This anthology focuses on the ethical issues surrounding
information control in the broadest sense. Anglo-American
institutions of intellectual property protect and restrict access
to vast amounts of information. Ideas and expressions captured in
music, movies, paintings, processes of manufacture, human genetic
information, and the like are protected domestically and globally.
The ethical issues and tensions surrounding free speech and
information control intersect in at least two important respects.
First, the commons of thought and expression is threatened by
institutions of copyright, patent, and trade secret. While
institutions of intellectual property may be necessary for
innovation and social progress they may also be detrimental when
used by the privileged and economically advantaged to control
information access, consumption, and expression. Second, free
speech concerns have been allowed to trump privacy interests in all
but the most egregious of cases. At the same time, our ability to
control access to information about ourselves--what some call
"informational privacy"--is rapidly diminishing. Data mining and
digital profiling are opening up what most would consider private
domains for public consumption and manipulation. Post-9/11, issues
of national security have run headlong into individual rights to
privacy and free speech concerns. While constitutional guarantees
against unwarranted searches and seizures have been relaxed, access
to vast amounts of information held by government agencies,
libraries, and other information storehouses has been restricted in
the name of national security.

Thus opens First Step Toward Ahriman by Dastur Adam Daniels, a tome
that serves as a guide for those who choose to worship Ahriman,
providing key articles of faith, prayers, and rituals. Ahriman is
of course the nemesis of Ahura Mazda in Zoroastrianism, and here he
is interpreted as the true essence of the universe, assisted by
Melek Taus, the illuminating light, guardian, and ruler of Earth in
this system. For the uninitiated, the Dakhma of Angra Mainyu seeks
to break away from the conventional association with traditional
Satanists, "due to the understanding that Satan is a fallen angel
subservient to the slave master Jehovah. Traditional Satanists
believe that in the end, Satan and Jehovah will war," and Satan
will emerge the victor. However, Ahriman is an equally unstoppable
force.
