"There is a vast literature on water in the Middle East, but few studies that take on such a balanced approach as Water Wisdom. The book makes a great addition to academic libraries around the world and for scholars involved in water policy studies."-Aaron Wolf, Oregon State University "This comprehensive, informed, and balanced volume provides invaluable insights into the roots of the water management challenges in the Middle East and charts a course for resolving this pressing issue."-James D. Wolfensohn, former Quartet Special Envoy for Gaza Israel and Palestine are, by international criteria, water scarce. As the peace process continues amidst ongoing violence, water remains a political and environmental issue. Thirty leading Palestinian and Israeli activists, water scientists, politicians, and others met and worked together to develop a future vision for the sustainable shared management of water resources that is presented in Water Wisdom. This book is model for those who believe that water conflict can be an opportunity for cooperation rather than violence. ALON TAL is on the faculty of Ben Gurion University of the Negev where he conducts interdisciplinary research on water management, biodiversity, desertification, and development policy. Previously he was the founding director of Adam Teva Vadin (The Israel Union for Environmental Defense), Israel's leading environmental advocacy organization; the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies; and chairman of Life Environment, Israel's Green NGO Umbrella Group. The extraordinary story of Israel's forests, from ancient times to the present. In this insightful and provocative book, Alon Tal provides a detailed account of Israeli forests, tracing their history from the Bible to the present, and outlines the effort to transform drylands and degraded soils into prosperous parks, rangelands, and ecosystems. Tal's description of Israel's trials and errors, and his exploration of both the environmental history and the current policy dilemmas surrounding that country's forests, will provide valuable lessons in the years to come for other parts of the world seeking to reestablish timberlands.

The environmental history of Israel is as intriguing and complex as
the nation itself. Situated on a mere 8,630 square miles, bordered
by the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf, varying from desert to
forest, Israel's natural environment presents innumerable
challenges to its growing population. The country's conflicted past
and present, diverse religions, and multitude of cultural
influences powerfully affect the way Israelis imagine, question,
and shape their environment. Zionism, from the late nineteenth
onward, has tempered nearly every aspect of human existence.
Scarcities of usable land and water coupled with border conflicts
and regional hostilities have steeled Israeli's survival instincts.
As this volume demonstrates, these powerful dialectics continue to
undergird environmental policy and practice in Israel today.
"This book is likely to become "the future point of reference for scholarship on environmental issues in Israel. Tal combines his extensive inside knowledge with broad and thorough research to take the reader clearly through a complex fabric of personalities, organizations, and issues."--Stuart Schoenfeld, York University "This is truly an excellent book. It is the first treatment of the whole array of environmental issues in Israel, and in its historical context - an absolute necessity. Extremely well-written and in fact hard to put down, this book is useful on many levels, for United Nations Agencies and development officials, Israeli and Palestinian government officials, and environmentalists and teachers around the world."--Brock Evans, Executive Director, The Endangered Species Coalition and author of many articles and books on the politics of the environment ""Pollution in a Promised Land is an innovative book, and an important one, by perhaps the most prominent environmental activist in Israel. Tal's approach is to take an "eagle's eye view" of his vast subject, now gliding far above, providing overview, now swooping down very close and, through interviews or anecdotes, describing his subject with great immediacy and in memorable detail."--Noah J. Efron, Bar Ilan University "Anyone who cares about the land of Israel should read "Pollution in a Promised Land. It is critical to understanding the social, political, and scientific dimensions of the country's environmental challenges as well as the country's remarkable ecological achievements. Alon Tal is uniquely qualified to present this fascinating and dramatic environmental history."--Tzachi Hanegbi, Minister of theEnvironment, Israel
Over the past thirty years, an astonishingly diverse set of issues has been addressed under the umbrella of the environmental movement. In Speaking of Earth, Alon Tal brings together twenty path-breaking speeches by leading environmentalists around the world that highlight the range of topics that have caught the attention of activists and inspired ecological movements. Included among the selections are Rachel Carson's defense of her eye-opening book Silent Spring, Prince Charles's passionate call for sustainable agriculture, and the Dalai Lama's presention of a path to ecological harmony. Appeals for action by Chico Mendes, the martyr of the Amazonian rainforest, are presented alongside Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai's vision of afforestation for Africa. Housewife hero Lois Gibbs's speech to Congress about the toxic pollution at Love Canal joins legendary Norwegian anthropologist-sailor Thor Heyerdahl's call to save the oceans at the 1972 Stockholm Conference. Each speech is annotated with a brief biography of the speaker and an accessible analysis of the particular environmental challenge that engaged them. The message that emerges is diverse, compelling, and passionate. The evolution of the world's environmental movement during the past-half century is articulated through the words of fervent individuals that launched a global transformation. Offering a refreshing summary of the depth and breadth of modern environmentalism, this book will be of interest to activists, students, professionals, and scholars alike.
