The Nature of Contemporary Organization Development (Hardcover): Anne-Clare Gillon The Nature of Contemporary Organization Development (Hardcover)
Anne-Clare Gillon
R3,881 Discovery Miles 38 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The nature of contemporary Organisation Development (OD) is often written about by both scholars and practitioners, yet there is little evidence of these descriptions (or debates on key issues) having been based on reliably collected data. This book compares academic and practitioner perspectives on the profession of OD in the UK and how it has evolved over four decades. The research which informs this book was designed to investigate similarities and differences in the perspectives between these two communities. Where practitioners and academics views varied in the data, reasons for this are explored in this book, through the theory lens of Institutionalism, Fashions, Fads and the Dissemination of Management Ideas. The empirical data in how OD has evolved in the UK in the underpinning research to this text was gathered through content analysis of job advertisements from over a four-decade period. This provided information on changes in the magnitude in the take up of the profession in the UK as well as significant developments in the content of the job roles over the period. It will not come as a surprise to find that American thinking dominates in OD as it does in many other domains of management. What is a surprise is the extent to which OD practice in the UK is so very different from what the academics tell us it is. This book also identifies the extent to which institutional theory is at play in the development of professions; with agency is a driver in shaping professions. This manifests itself in terms of the perceived interests of what will give leverage for success in practitioner and academic careers. The Nature of Contemporary Organization Development is key reading for researchers, scholars an practitioners alike of Organizational change and development, organizational studies, management philosophy and related disciplines

"Thrilling, important, and profoundly moving. A true gift." -- Brian Selznick, creator of the New York Times bestsellers Big Tree and The Invention of Hugo Cabret, winner of the Caldecott Medal "A compelling adventure . . . timeless!" -- Lynne Kelly, author of the Schneider Family Book Award winner Song for a Whale "This book is *kissfist*!!!" -- Alex Gino, award-winning author of Melissa and Green As a young teacher on Martha's Vineyard, Mary Lambert feels restless and adrift. So when a league of missionaries invite her to travel abroad, she knows it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Paris is home to a pioneering deaf school where she could meet its visionary instructors Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc--and bring back their methods to America! But the endeavor comes at a cost: The missionaries' plan to "save" deaf children is questionable at best--and requires Mary's support. What's more, the missionaries' work threatens the Wampanoag and other Native peoples' freedom and safety. Is pursuing Mary's own goals worth the price of betraying her friends and her own values? So begins a feverish and fraught adventure. Brimming with vivid detail and startling insight, Sail Me Away Home will enrich your understanding of the d/Deaf experience as it celebrates d/Deaf history, culture, and community.

Mary Lambert has always felt safe and protected on her beloved island of Martha's Vineyard. Her great-great-grandfather was an early English settler and the first deaf islander. Now, over a hundred years later, many people there -- including Mary -- are deaf, and nearly everyone can communicate in sign language. Mary has never felt isolated. She is proud of her lineage.

But recent events have delivered winds of change. Mary's brother died, leaving her family shattered. Tensions over land disputes are mounting between English settlers and the Wampanoag people. And a cunning young scientist has arrived, hoping to discover the origin of the island's prevalent deafness. His maniacal drive to find answers soon renders Mary a "live specimen" in a cruel experiment. Her struggle to save herself is at the core of this penetrating and poignant novel that probes our perceptions of ability and disability.

Unlikely Rebels - The Gifford Girls and the Fight for Irish Freedom (Paperback, New): Anne Clare Unlikely Rebels - The Gifford Girls and the Fight for Irish Freedom (Paperback, New)
Anne Clare
R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many people who know the story of the 1916 Rising have heard the harrowing account of the wedding of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett in Kilmainham Gaol, on the day before his execution for his part in leading the Rising. However, what is not so well known is that Grace has five sisters, all of whom were involved in the Irish nationalist movement, including Muriel who was married to Thomas MacDonagh, and Nellie and Kate who were both imprisoned for their Republican activities. Unlikely Rebels tells the story of the sisters, who were, by virtue of their forebears and training, most unlikely Irish rebels. The daughters of staunchly unionist parents and rasied in the Protestant faith, all of them embraced the Republican movement wholeheartedly. When the opportunity arose for them to play their part in the struggle for Ireland's freedom, they seized it, despite the hardship and in some cases tragedy it brought them.
