Transforming Learning in Schools and Communities - The Remaking of Education for a Cosmopolitan Society (Hardcover): Bob... Transforming Learning in Schools and Communities - The Remaking of Education for a Cosmopolitan Society (Hardcover)
Bob Lingard, Jon Nixon, Stewart Ranson
R5,039 Discovery Miles 50 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many educators have been looking for a fundamentally different approach to engage young people and encourage progress in learning. Supported by recent public policy developments, a transformation is beginning to take place in the practice of many schools. The focus of learning is shifting away from the child as an individual in a classroom detached from the surrounding neighbourhood to a learning community that embraces carers and families as well as young people and teachers. This monograph analyses the organising principles of this cultural transformation and considers how it will shape learning in schools and communities throughout the world. The book brings together key thinkers from the fields of new learning, new communities of educational practice and new forms of educational governance. Arguing for the necessary interconnectedness of pedagogy, institutions and governance, this ground-breaking book will undoubtedly shape the policy agenda in this area for years to come. >

Global-National Networks in Education Policy - Primary Education, Social Enterprises and 'Teach for Bangladesh'... Global-National Networks in Education Policy - Primary Education, Social Enterprises and 'Teach for Bangladesh' (Hardcover)
Rino Wiseman Adhikary, Bob Lingard, Ian Hardy
R3,219 Discovery Miles 32 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Set against the backdrop of globalization and global philanthropy, this book offers new perspectives on the sociological dynamics and governance implications of 'social entrepreneurial' policy in education. It examines the spatialities, relationships and culture that powerfully mediated the making and localisation of 'Teach for Bangladesh'. This globalised and philanthropy-backed reform model is based on 'Teach for America/All' (TfA) which promotes social entrepreneurial solutions to educational problems across continents. The authors demonstrate how TfB's policy model travelled through networks of diaspora, finance, technology and media and became established in Bangladesh through complex policy work. The book documents empirical research from Bangladesh to draw out broader implications in relation to education policy-making and policy content in today's globalizing world. The book also contributes to ongoing debates in contemporary comparative education about North-South dialogue, policy mobility and transfer, philanthrocapitalism, and international teacher education.

Teachers + Schooling Making a Difference takes seriously the question that teachers ask, 'What do I do on Monday?' and does provide answers.'From the foreword by Professor Michael Apple, University of Wisconsin Education debates are currently dominated by free-market ideologists who push privatisation and competition as the answer to every problem, regardless of damage to schools and pupils. Teachers + Schooling Making a Difference shows that we can think about education in a far more productive way.'Professor R.W.Connell, University of Sydney This book is a lesson in making hope practical. It makes a compelling argument for recognising, supporting and enabling teachers as central to progressive school reform.'Professor Jenny Ozga, University of EdinburghWhat teachers do in the classroom really matters, even though schools cannot compensate fully for difficulties children may face at home and in society. Good teachers and good schools have been making a difference in children's lives for generations, but what exactly is it that works?Based on extensive research in 1000 primary and secondary classrooms, this book examines the tough questions about teaching methods, curriculum, assessment and teachers' professionalism. The authors isolate the key elements that make the difference in the classroom, and offer teachers practical approaches to working with all their students.Teachers and Schools Making a Difference is essential reading for teachers and school administrators who want to improve their professional skills and offer a genuinely democratic education.

Dominic Wyse, Vivienne Baumfield, David Egan, Louise Hayward, Moira Hulme, …
R3,878 Discovery Miles 38 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is there an 'ideal' primary school curriculum? Who should decide what the curriculum is? Should teachers have autonomy over how they teach? The curriculum is the heart of what teachers teach and learners learn: effective teaching is only possible with an effective curriculum. Yet in spite of its importance, there has been a crisis in curriculum that has been caused in large part by governments assuming direct control over the curriculum, assessment, and increasingly, pedagogy. Creating the Curriculum tackles this thorny issue head on, challenging student and practising primary school teachers to think critically about past and present issues and to engage with a new wave of curriculum thinking and development. Considering curriculum construction and its impact on teaching and learning in the four countries of the UK, key issues considered include: who should decide the curriculum, its aims and its values the extent to which issues in primary education swing back and forth Subjects versus thematic organisation, stages and phases, progression, breadth and balance prescription versus teacher autonomy the key features of effective classroom practice strategies for assessing the whole curriculum how language in the classroom influences curriculum design understanding curricula in the context of children's social and personal circumstances creativity, curriculum and the classroom. Illustrated throughout with strategies and case studies from the classroom, Creating the Curriculum accessibly links the latest research and evidence with concrete examples of good practice. It is a timely exploration of what makes an effective and meanginful curriculum and how teachers can bring new relevance, motivation and powerful values to what they teach.

Exploring education policy through newspapers and social media offers an original, theorised, and empirically-based account of contemporary (re)presentations, (re)articulations, and (re)imaginings of education policy through news and new media. In its thorough exploration of the uses and effects of newspapers and Twitter in education policy, the book provides a detailed, research-based account of media influences, and opens up multiple future research agendas in media sociology and policy sociology in education. The authors place an important, analytical focus on mediatisation and social mediatisation or deep mediatisation, and how both have effects and affects in education policy and politics. Their analyses situate these, sociologically, within changing societies, changing media, and changing education policy. The book also explores the effects of datafication and digitalisation of the social in all forms of media and their manifestations in morphing imbrications between the global, the national, and the local in education policies. This book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and higher degree research students in the domains of media sociology and policy sociology of education. It also will be of interest to policy makers and politicians in education, teacher unions and education activists, journalists, and those concerned about the impacts of the decline in legacy media and the surveillance and commercialisation possibilities of new media.

Reimagining Globalization and Education (Hardcover): Fazal Rizvi, Bob Lingard, Risto Rinne Reimagining Globalization and Education (Hardcover)
Fazal Rizvi, Bob Lingard, Risto Rinne
R3,890 Discovery Miles 38 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together leading scholars in Global Studies in Education to reflect on how various developments of historic significance have unsettled the neoliberal imaginary of globalization. The developments include greater recognition of inequalities and the changing nature of work and communication; the emergence of new technologies of governance; a greater awareness of geopolitical shifts; the revival of nationalism, populism and anti-globalization sentiments; and the recognition of risks surrounding pandemics and climate change. Drawing from a range of disciplinary perspectives, the chapters in this collection examine how these developments demand new ways of thinking about globalization and its implications for education policy and practice - beyond the neoliberal imaginary.

Globalizing Educational Accountabilities (Paperback): Bob Lingard, Wayne Martino, Goli Rezai-Rashti, Sam Sellar Globalizing Educational Accountabilities (Paperback)
Bob Lingard, Wayne Martino, Goli Rezai-Rashti, Sam Sellar
R1,545 Discovery Miles 15 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book fills a gap in the literature by focusing on globalization with regard to the rescaling of educational accountabilities, linked to international and national testing regimes and their impact. In particular, this book examines the impact and effects of this global framework in two illustrative nations: Australia and Canada. The focus on these two nations, which have very different forms of federalism, allows for consideration of the rescaling of politics and policies in the context of globalization and for an analysis of the complex rescaling of educational accountabilities. It is the first book to document and analyse the multi-scalar, relational and differentiated effects in national schooling systems of this rescaling of educational accountability. The authors also consider the ways in which these accountability regimes have rearticulated social justice and equity policies within nations in reductive ways. It offers scholars and policy makers both a methodology and an epistemological framework grounded in critical policy sociology for doing education policy analysis in a time of neo-liberal globalization.

Globalizing Education Policy (Paperback): Fazal Rizvi, Bob Lingard Globalizing Education Policy (Paperback)
Fazal Rizvi, Bob Lingard
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rizvi and Lingard's account of the global politics of education is thoughtful, complex and compelling. It is the first really comprehensive discussion and analysis of global trends in education policy, their effects - structural and individual - and resistance to them. In the enormous body of writing on globalisation this book stands out and will become a basic text in education policy courses around the world. - Stephen J Ball, Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education, Institute of Education, University of London, UK In what ways have the processes of globalization reshaped the educational policy terrain? How might we analyse education policies located within this new terrain, which is at once local, national, regional and global? In Globalizing Education Policy, the authors explore the key global drivers of policy change in education, and suggest that these do not operate in the same way in all nation-states. They examine the transformative effects of globalization on the discursive terrain within which educational policies are developed and enacted, arguing that this terrain is increasingly informed by a range of neo-liberal precepts which have fundamentally changed the ways in which we think about educational governance. They also suggest that whilst in some countries these precepts are resisted, to some extent, they have nonetheless become hegemonic, and provide an overview of some critical issues in educational policy to which this hegemonic view of globalization has given rise, including: devolution and decentralization new forms of governance the balance between public and private funding of education access and equity and the education of girls curriculum particularly with respect to the teaching of English language and technology pedagogies and high stakes testing and the global trade in education. These issues are explored within the context of major shifts in global processes and ideological discourses currently being experienced, and negotiated by all countries. The book also provides an approach to education policy analysis in an age of globalization and will be of interest to those studying globalization and education policy across the social sciences.

Miriam Henry, Bob Lingard, Fazal Rizvi, Sandra Taylor
R4,999 Discovery Miles 49 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Governments around the world are trying to come to terms with new technologies, new social movements and a changing global economy. As a result, education policy finds itself at the center of a political struggle between those who see it only for its instrumental outcomes, and those who see its potential for human emancipation. This book examines policy making at each level, from perspectives both inside and outside the state bureaucracy, and will help both undergraduate and postgraduate students prepare for an uncertain educational world, while still retaining their enthusiasm for education.

Governments around the world are trying to come to terms with new technologies, new social movements and a changing global economy. As a result, educational policy finds itself at the centre of a major political struggle between those who see it only for its instrumental outcomes and those who see its potential for human emancipation. This book is a successor to the best-selling Understanding Schooling (1988). It provides a readable account of how educational policies are developed by the state in response to broader social, cultural, economic and political changes which are taking place. It examines the way in which schools live and work with these changes, and the policies which result from them. The book examines policy making at each level, from perspectives both inside and outside the state bureaucracy. It has a particular focus on social justice. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students will find that this book enables them to understand the reasoning behind the changes they are expected to implement. It will help to prepare them to confront an uncertain educational world, whilst still retaining their enthusiasm for education.

Bob Lingard, Wayne Martino, Goli Rezai-Rashti
R408 Discovery Miles 4 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Around the globe, various kinds of testing, including high stakes national census testing, have become meta-policies, steering educational systems in particular directions, and having great effects on schools and on teacher practices, as well as upon student learning and curricula. There has also been a complementary global aspect to this with the OECD's PISA and IEA's TIMSS and PIRLS, which have had impacts on national education systems and their policy frameworks. While there has been a globalized educational policy discourse that suggests that high stakes standardised testing will drive up standards and enhance the quality of a nation's human capital and thus their international economic competitiveness, this discourse still manifests itself in specific, vernacular, path dependent ways in different nations. High stakes testing and its effects can also be seen as part of the phenomenon of the 'datafication' of the world and 'policy as numbers', linked to other reforms of the state, including new public management, network governance, and top-down and test-based modes of accountability. This edited collection provides theoretically and empirically informed analyses of these developments. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education Policy.

Globalisation and Education (Hardcover): Bob Lingard Globalisation and Education (Hardcover)
Bob Lingard
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection focuses on education policy in the context of globalisation and draws together influential research dealing with the interplay between education policy and globalisation. Globalisation and neo-liberalism in relation to education policy are addressed, as is the impact of the global financial crisis, the recent rise of ethno-nationalism and progressive challenges to neo-liberal hegemony. A number of chapters deal with the new spatialities instantiated by globalisation's new technology, and consider the implications for education policy. Also discussed are global policy actors (such as the OECD, EU and edu-businesses) in education policy; the significance of international large scale assessments to an emergent global policy field; refugees and education; English language policy and globalisation; off-shore schools; and the importance of affect in policy in the context of globalisation. The collection closes with two methodological contributions that consider the implications of globalisation in today's critical education policy analysis. The collection is brought together in a substantial introduction that traverses the literature and research on globalisation and education policy and also situates the chapters and approaches in the collection within the field. The chapters in this book were originally published as articles in various Taylor and Francis journals.

  • the balance between public and private funding of education
  • access and equity and the education of girls
  • curriculum particularly with respect to the teaching of English language and technology
