Gunon published his fundamental doctrinal work, Man and His
Becoming according to the Vedanta, in 1925. After asserting that
the Vedanta represents the purest metaphysics in Hindu doctrine, he
acknowledges the impossibility of ever expounding it exhaustively
and states that the specific object of his study will be the nature
and constitution of the human being. Nonetheless, taking the human
being as point of departure, he goes on to outline the fundamental
principles of all traditional metaphysics. He leads the reader
gradually to the doctrine of the Supreme Identity and its logical
corollary-the possibility that the being in the human state might
in this very life attain liberation, the unconditioned state where
all separateness and risk of reversion to manifested existence
ceases. Although Gunon chose the doctrine of the Advaita school
(and in particular that of Shankara) as his basis, Man and His
Becoming should not be considered exclusively an exposition of this
school and of this master. It is, rather, a synthetic account
drawing not only upon other orthodox branches of Hinduism, but not
infrequently also upon the teachings of other traditional forms.
Neither is it a work of erudition in the sense of the orientalists
and historians of religion who study doctrines from the 'outside',
but represents knowledge of the traditionally transmitted and
effective 'sacred science'. Gunon treats other aspects of Hinduism
in his Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines and Studies
in Hinduism.
Each year on the first Saturday in May, the world turns its
attention to the twin spires of Churchill Downs for the high-stakes
excitement of the "greatest two minutes in sports," the Kentucky
Derby. No American sporting event can claim the history, tradition,
or pageantry that the Kentucky Derby holds. For more than 130
years, spectators have been fascinated by the magnificent horses
that run the Louisville track. Thoroughbreds such as Secretariat
and Barbaro have earned instant international fame, along with
jockeys such as Isaac Murphy, Ron Turcotte, and Calvin Borel. The
Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier
Sporting Event calls this great tradition to post and illuminates
its history and culture. Rising from its humble beginnings as an
American variation of England's Epsom Derby, the Kentucky Derby
became a centerpiece of American sports and the racing industry,
confirming Kentucky's status as the Horse Capital of the World.
James C. Nicholson argues that the Derby, at its essence, is a
celebration of a place, existing as a connection between Kentucky's
mythic past and modern society. The Derby is more than just a horse
race -- it is an experience enhanced by familiar traditions, icons,
and images that help Derby fans to understand Kentucky and define
themselves as Americans. Today the Kentucky Derby continues to
attract international attention from royalty, celebrities, racing
fans, and those who simply enjoy an icy mint julep, a fabulous hat,
and a wager on who will make it to the winner's circle. Nicholson
provides an intriguing and thorough history of the Kentucky Derby,
examining the tradition, spectacle, culture, and evolution of the
Kentucky Derby -- the brightest jewel of the Triple Crown.
The first International Symposium on Theory and Applica- tion of
Ion and Enzyme Electrodes in Biology and Medicine was organized at
SchloB Reisensburg near Ulm in 1974. The concept of this meeting
was to discuss the theory and applica- tion of carrier operated
electrodes within an interdisciplinary group of investigators
coming from physical chemistry, or- ganic chemistry, physiology,
biochemistry and medicine. Be- cause of its interdisciplinary
character, the Symposium proved to be very productive and further
meetings based on the same principle were held at the
Max-Planck-Institut fUr Systemphysiologie in Dortmund in 1977 and
1980. For the 1983 meeting it was decided to return to the ethe-
real atmosphere of a castle (Burg Rabenstein) set in the beau-
tiful surroundings of Swiss Franconia. Participation was re-
stricted to those involved in the theoretical, experimental and
clinical applications of ion selective electrodes. In this way a
critical mass was achieved whereby an infor- mation transfer was
induced between groups who had previ- ously had little or no
communication with each other. We hope that this interdisciplinary
spirit may encourage and stimulate those scientists and clinicians
who are considering entering the field of ion investigations and
that this book may serve as a compendium of current ion selective
electrode methodology and ideas, together with their application in
the- oretical fields, physiology and medicine.
This book provides a complete, easy-to-use handbook for nurses who
see patients with heart failure. In recent years heart failure has
become a high priority in health care. With more nurses caring for
patients with heart failure and making decisions that are often
complex, there is a clear need for those nurses to have access to
good quality clinical information and guidance. This book is
designed to be a practical, 'one-stop', handbook for the
practitioner, supported by case studies and up-todate references
throughout, providing all the topics the Practitioner or student
may need in their work with patients with heart failure.
Volume Transmission Revisited describes the mounting evidence that
cells of the central nervous system are able to communicate via a
host of chemical signals that flow through the extracellular space.
Volume transmission (VT) constitutes a novel and complementary
communication system to classical synaptic transmission. The new
modality, which does not require specific connections between
cells, leads to a reconsideration of the spatial relationships of
neurons and glia, brings a new dimension to network modelling and
is relevant to both short term interactions and long term tonic
states of the brain.
The reader will find 29 chapters describing many of the major
discoveries in VT during the last decade.
The most striking feature of this publication is the collecting
together of many compelling examples of the ubiquitous nature of
VT. These point to its increasing relevance from basic neuroscience
research to clinical practice. Those working in other areas will
find numerous invaluable examples of how leading investigators have
gone about assembling evidence for VT.
An Irish immigrant, a collection agent for crime bosses, a
professional boxer, and a prolific gambler, John Morrissey was --
if nothing else -- an unlikely candidate to become one of the most
important figures in the history of Thoroughbred racing. As a young
man, he worked as a political heavy in New York before going to San
Francisco in search of a fortune at the height of the Gold Rush.
After returning to the east coast, he was hired by Tammany Hall and
was soon locked in a deadly rivalry with William Poole, better
known as "Bill the Butcher." As time went on, Morrissey parlayed
his youthful exploits into a remarkably successful career as a
businessman and politician. After establishing a gambling house in
Saratoga Springs, the hardnosed entrepreneur organized the first
Thoroughbred race meet at what would become Saratoga Race Course in
1863. Morrissey went on to be elected to two terms in the U.S.
House of Representatives and two terms in the New York State
Senate. In The Notorious John Morrissey, James C. Nicholson
explores the improbable life of the man who brought Thoroughbred
racing back to prominence in the United States. Though few of his
contemporaries did more to develop the commercialization of sports
in America, Morrissey's colorful background has prevented him from
getting the attention he deserves. This entertaining and
long-overdue biography finally does justice to his astounding
rags-to-riches story while exploring an intriguing chapter in the
history of horse racing.
Originally this instruction book was my golf diary, it slowly
evolved as I kept notes during my long journey back to playing golf
after a hip injury. I never intended to publish it. I'm not a
professional golfer; my golfing friends and others I have taught
encouraged me to publish this book, but it took a stranger playing
in our foursome to convince me. After we had played a few holes I
complimented him on his swing; he told me that he was a beginner.
To my surprise he held up a few pages of my golf notes that I had
given to our mutual friend. After I informed him that they were
from my golf diary, he asked if he could have a copy and suggested
I should consider writing a golf instruction book. This is it. I
hope it helps you as much as it helped him and others. Most
beginner golfers know what a good swing looks like; they've seen
the best golfers on television. However, when they attempt to learn
the game, they soon discover they can't organize all the moving
parts to send the ball in the right direction. Knowing how to
communicate to your body, and understanding your natural golf swing
builds confidence and gets good results. After you've learned how
to communicate the golf swing to your body it compensates for your
swing hitches; the correct swing positions will happen naturally on
their own.
Over the past ten years, addressing what Strategic Communications
is has been a challenge for the military community. It is at times
referred to as a process, referred to in the context of the
strategic level of war, and referred to in the context of anyone
communicating at any level. The joint community has provided a
definition of Strategic Communications and there has been a large
amount of non-doctrinal discussions, but very little substance
other than the recognition of the need to synchronize actions.
Terms like inform, influence and persuade are referred to but have
never been doctrinally defined leaving their interpretation up to
each individual. This paper proposes a communication framework
under which the military practitioner can visualize and verbalize
intended cognitive effects desired upon a specified audience. It
utilizes a modified version of John Boyd's OODA-Loop, combined with
a classic communication model, in order to visually depict the
cognitive process that occurs starting with the introduction of new
information from one individual to the desired effect that is
intended upon another. It also constructs a written format
borrowing from the Field Artillery Task-Purpose-Method-Effect
construct and applies the framework to three case studies. The
cognitive model proposed meets the intent of the 2011 U.S. National
Security Strategy, which calls for the better understanding of
attitudes, opinions, grievances and concerns of others in order to
develop better plans.
A quarter of a million people braved miserable conditions at Epsom
Downs on June 2, 1954, to see the 175th running of the prestigious
Derby Stakes. Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill were in
attendance, along with thousands of Britons who were all convinced
of the unfailing superiority of English bloodstock and eager to see
a British colt take the victory. They were shocked when a
Kentucky-born chestnut named Never Say Die galloped to a two-length
triumph at odds of 33--1, winning Britain's greatest race and
beginning an important shift in the world of Thoroughbred racing.
Never Say Die traces the history of this extraordinary colt,
beginning with his foaling in Lexington, Kentucky, when a shot of
bourbon whiskey revived him and earned him his name. Author James
C. Nicholson also tells the stories of the influential individuals
brought together by the horse and his victory -- from the heir to
the Singer sewing machine fortune to the Aga Khan. Most fascinating
is the tale of Mona Best of Liverpool, England, whose well-placed
bet on the long-shot Derby contender allowed her to open the Casbah
Coffee Club. There, her son met musicians John Lennon, Paul
McCartney, and George Harrison and later joined their band.
Featuring a foreword by the original drummer for the Beatles, Pete
Best, this remarkable book reveals how an underdog's surprise
victory played a part in the formation of the most successful and
influential rock band in history and made the Bluegrass region of
Kentucky the center of the international Thoroughbred industry.
