Risk as we now know it is a wholly new phenomenon, the by-product
of our ever more complex and powerful technologies. In business,
policy making, and in everyday life, it demands a new way of
looking at technological and environmental uncertainty. In this
definitive volume, four of the world's leading risk researchers
present a fundamental critique of the prevailing approaches to
understanding and managing risk - the 'rational actor paradigm'.
They show how risk studies must incorporate the competing
interests, values, and rationalities of those involved and find a
balance of trust and acceptable risk. Their work points to a
comprehensive and significant new theory of risk and uncertainty
and of the decision making process they require. The implications
for social, political, and environmental theory and practice are
enormous. Winner of the 2000-2002 Outstanding Publication Award of
the Section on Environment and Technology of the American
Sociological Association
This is the ideal book for anyone contemplating starting a career
in, or shifting their career to, studying the dynamics that drive
cancer progression and its response to therapy. Topics include the
theory and population genetics of cancers, genetic diversity within
tumors (intra-tumor heterogeneity), understanding how mutant clones
expand in tissues, the role of cancer stem cells in the dynamics of
tumors, the evolution of metastasis, and how to improve cancer
therapy by addressing the evolution of cancers in response to our
interventions. There are also chapters on the patterns of cancer
susceptibility in humans due to a mismatch between our modern
environment and the environment in which our ancestors evolved, as
well as a chapter on the evolution of cancer suppression mechanisms
that have evolved in different species, particularly the large
long-lived animals like elephants and whales that are better at
suppressing cancers than humans. This book serves as a primer on
the evolutionary and ecological theory of cancer- the framework
upon which all the details of cancer may be hung. It is ideal for
oncologists and cancer researchers interested in evolutionary
theory, and evolutionary biologists and ecologists interested in
gaining insights into cancer development and prevention.

This book presents an Intelligent Control Architecture (ICA) to
enable multiple collaborating marine vehicles to autonomously carry
out underwater intervention missions. The presented ICA is generic
in nature but aimed at a case study where a marine surface craft
and an underwater vehicle are required to work cooperatively. It is
shown that they are capable of cooperating autonomously towards the
execution of complex activities since they have different but
complementary capabilities. The ICA implementation is verified in
simulation, and validated in trials by means of a team of
autonomous marine robots. This book also presents architectural
details and evaluation scenarios of the ICA, results of simulations
and trials from different maritime operations, and future research
directions.

*The bestselling addiction treatment manual, fully updated: 50% new
material includes eight new sessions. *Tremendous need: counselors
want to apply the stages-of-change model (also known as the
transtheoretical model, or TTM) in their work. *Uniquely qualified
authors have decades of experience; DiClemente is the co-developer
of the model. *Provides easy-to-use, flexible, highly practical
materials, with a lay-flat binding. *Online resources: all handouts
are available to download and print.
A widely adopted practitioner resource and course text, this book
shows how to apply knowledge about behavior change in general --
and the stages-of-change model in particular -- to make substance
abuse treatment more effective. The authors are leaders in the
field who describe ways to tailor interventions for clients with
varying levels of motivation or readiness to change. They draw on
cutting-edge theory and research on the transtheoretical model to
explain what works (and what doesn't work) at different stages of
change. Rich clinical examples illustrate the "whats," "whys," and
"how-tos" of using the stages-of-change model to inform treatment
planning and intervention for individuals, groups, couples, and
families. New to This Edition *Reflects the ongoing development of
the stages-of-change model and research advances over the past
decade. *Chapter on stage-based brief interventions in health care,
social service, and community settings. *Group treatment chapter
has been significantly revised. *Expanded coverage of the change
processes relevant to each stage. See also Group Treatment for
Substance Abuse, Second Edition, by Mary Marden Velasquez et al., a
manual for a group-based approach grounded in the transtheoretical
model.
Finanzplatzes Z}richempirisch dokumentiert.
Not everyone who experiments with substance use or risky behavior
becomes addicted, and many who are addicted have been able to
recover. This authoritative book, now revised and updated, has
given tens of thousands of professionals and students a
state-of-the-art framework for understanding the journey both into
and out of addiction. From Carlo C. DiClemente, codeveloper of the
transtheoretical model (TTM), the book identifies the stages and
processes involved in initiating, modifying, maintaining, or
stopping any pattern of behavior. Grounded in extensive research,
and illustrated with vivid case examples, the book shows how using
the TTM can help overcome obstacles to change and make treatment
and prevention more effective. New to This Edition *Incorporates 15
years of research advances, contemporary prevention and treatment
approaches, and the ongoing development of the TTM. *Chapter on
current developments in intervention research. *Expanded
discussions of neuroscience; self-regulation; behavioral economics;
self-help, mutual help, and spirituality; motivational issues;
"process addictions" (gambling and sex addiction); and more.
*Deeper coverage of risk and protective factors across adolescent
and young adult development.

They "knew everything about us," the grandmother told the Norwegian
police investigators between her tears. Ten-year old Grete was
going to meet her teacher in school. It all seemed so "normal" said
the grandparents. A hacker named Frank and a triad of Norwegian,
Europol and FBI investigators convene to "find Grete." There is
more at stake that has mobilized the cross-Atlantic cooperation.
What they don't know is that they have opened the door to the game
of power getting played in the new domain of cyberspace where real
and virtual (cyber) space collide and the rules of trust need to be
rethought. They "know everything about us" is how the game gets
played. Politics will get in the way and they will find Grete, just
not alive. That is Frank's fear. In a dizzying rush of hack and
counter hack, the forces of good bring together an odd assortment
of heroes. Monika learned her trade in Russia as one of the
original Anons as in the Anonymous. Frank started hacking in the
nineties and Jaime, now an FBI Special Agent leads the elite cyber
squad from the NYC field office. The Norwegian lead investigator
from KRIPOS is Fredrick Hansen who is nearing the end of his
career. He remembers why it was that he had first joined. It means
everything to "find Grete." A timely book that tells a story of
fiction in the context of a present day international concern with
privacy and security. It is a concern felt individually as in
reputation and privacy and in the large stage of international
commerce, national interests and the transition to all things
electronic and virtual. Where does it stop? Are there any controls
in place and can we have it both ways; have the social media
applications and still control our individual privacy? Can we have
an effective modern government and still retain the right of free
speech to criticize those that govern by the will of the people.
There are no larger topics facing society today. The public is
caught in the crosshairs. The President of Brazil spoke to this
topic at the United Nations when she said that individual privacy
is at the heart of a free democracy, you can't have one without the
other. eNikita takes this subject even deeper as the accelerating
drive of technology harbors things that have seemed beyond the
reach of the human endeavor. While the story is about the
kidnapping of a young girl, the reader is constantly aware that
something else is in play. Technology is power. This is where this
story goes. It has a name, The Singularity, when humans transcend
their own biology. The young heroine, Grete, gives this complex
story of power and technology a very real human face filled with
all the human emotions and the thrill of what happens when good
people put aside their personal agendas and the politics of things
to battle the worst kind of evil that can exist.
By providing both theoretical and practical primary research data,
this book gives a spiritual and theological voice to the religious
experiences of persons whom many Christians ostracize as persons
outside of God's blessings and salvation. This study provides that
voice by listening respectfully to some LGBT Christians' stories of
their spiritual experiences and allowing those narratives of their
experiences of God in their lives to be heard, while letting them
speak for themselves, alongside the theoretical-historical
information. Through their experiences of God working in different
ways in their lives, all four research participants were able to
reconcile and integrate their faith with their sexual orientation,
and to arrive at the point of believing that holiness or salvation
and homosexuality are not mutually exclusive. This book treats the
narratives of these same-sex oriented Christians as spiritually
revelatory and thus a contemporary medium of God's revelation in
our post-modern era. It can therefore help us all, homosexual and
heterosexual Christians alike, including those who are struggling
to reconcile their faith and their sexual orientation, to see that
holiness or salvation and homosexuality are not necessarily
mutually exclusive. This book is a sequel to my earlier book,
Blessing Same-Sex Unions: Theological Reflections (2005).
