This new book is a detailed study of one of the lesser known
aspects of the German Wehrmacht in World War II. Covered are the
variety of unit types, equipment, insignia, training, and
operations.
An excellent survey of the most recent advances in the area of
cellular and molecular biology of glial cells and their involvement
in remyelination and functional repair in the CNS. A major part of
this book deals with signaling paths within and among neural cells.
Glial cells (astrocytes, oligodentrocytes, microglial cells)
themselves release substantial amounts of cytokines, growth factors
and other signaling molecules, which play an important role during
injury and regeneration. Another signaling route between neurons
and glial cells follows ion channels and neurotransmitter
receptors. In addition to animal models, human oligodentrocytes in
cell culture and in the human MS brain are characterized with
respect to their immunocytochemistry and function.
eat shock proteins (HSPs), also called stress proteins, are not
only induced in response to elevated temperatures, but also as a
result of various stress situations, including environmental
strains, viral H infection, ischemia, anoxia and oxidative stress.
These stress situations trigger cellular defence mechanisms that
act as an emergency system capable of combatting the toxic
consequences due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins. Heat
shock proteins are involved in many physiological processes,
including development and differentiation, organisation of the
cytoarchi tecture by binding to cytoskeletal elements and
regulation of the balance between cell death and survival. Many
heat shock proteins work as molecular chaperones. In this role,
they contribute to in vivo protein folding and prevent
nonproductive interactions with other proteins and cellular c-
ponents. In recent years it has been found that the chaperone
system and the proteolytic machinery work closely together, and
that proteasomal - hibition causes the upregulation of stress
proteins. Impairment of the proteasomal machinery and chaperone
functions lead to protein damage, which contributes to
neurodegenerative disorders and to the aging process.
Econometric techniques and models are still being extensively
used in the business of forecasting and policy advice. This book
presents recent advances in the theory and applications of
quantitative economic policy, with particular emphasis on fiscal
and monetary policies in a European and global context. The volume
honors Andrew Hughes Hallett, a pioneer and major scientist in
quantitative economic policy analysis, whose contributors are among
his friends and former students.

Test in English & German. The town hall in Bremen with its
associated Roland statue in the market square in front of the
building make up a UNESCO World Heritage site and thus count as
outstanding examples of architectural and cultural history. The
Bremen town hall is an ideal image of this building type that is so
important for European and Western history. It is almost a textbook
example of the medieval and early modern town hall. The building
dates from 1405 to 1410 and has not been fundamentally altered
since. The only exception is that it was carefully continued
between 1595 and 1614, when it acquired an extended figurative
facade decoration based on the forms of the Weser Renaissance that
were current at the time. This underlined the Hanseatic city's
claims to immediacy as a free imperial city. The figurative
decoration is almost encyclopaedic in its scope, showing the
period's striving for humanistic education in the form of
iconography with a wide-ranging political and religious spectrum of
allegorical themes. The old town hall has remained almost untouched
to the present day. In the late 19th century, when the city
administration had acquired greater responsibilities, and thus
needed more space, an extension was finally added at the back of
the building, which Munich architect Gabriel von Seidl sensitively
subordinated to the existing structure. The particular importance
of the town hall in Bremen is based on the fact that it is
extremely ambitious in architectural terms, and at the same time
symbolises the republican and municipal structures of European
cities. The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is the oldest European
city republic, and has retained its independence until today as a
Land in its own right in the German Federal Republic. This
self-confidence is expressed through the resources of architecture
and the pictorial programme. As the best-preserved example for this
particular building type in Germany the town hall in Bremen has
also a unique significance as a historical monument.

Amsterdam-based architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos,
principals of UNStudio, are stars of the international architecture
scene. Culling from a pool of interdisciplinary experts, UNStudio
seeks to make a significant contribution to the discipline of
architecture, to continue to develop our qualities with respect to
design, technology, knowledge and management and to be a specialist
in public network projects. We see as mutually sustaining the
environment, market demands and client wishes that enable our work,
and we aim for results in which our goals and our client's goals
overlap. The outcome of their self-defined goals are apparent in
dynamic buildings like Five Franklin Place, a residential building
completed in 2007 in New York's TriBeCa neighborhood, which
expresses a nuanced conceptual and technical complexity and
confidence while also providing a must-see architectural
experience. This volume reveals UNStudio's process, in which a
sense of place is seamlessly integrated with aesthetic and
conceptual considerations.
In this book, some of the new challenges posed by globalisation to
different research areas of the economic science are addressed.
Attention is mainly focused on the implications of free trade and
financial integration, but problems of fiscal sustainability and
economic growth are also examined. The book is organised in three
sections. The first deals with major problems faced by
resource-rich African economies and by fiscally restrained European
countries. The second addresses some implications of multilateral
trade relations on the organisation of domestic industrial sectors,
on labour markets and on innovation. The third focuses on financial
and real consequences of increasing integration of capital and
foreign exchange markets.
Text in English & Italian. Ivano Gianola is one of the founding
members of the so-called Ticino School. Like the other significant
figures of this legendary school he is primarily concerned with
urban-development and architectonic quality of building in the
Canton of Ticino. The extensive uvre that has sprung from this
concern has produced a plethora of intuitively designed,
distinctive buildings. After more than ten years of planning and
building, Gianola's most extensive project and at the same time the
largest project of the Canton of Ticino to date is now open to the
public. The new Cultural and Art Centre of Lugano is located
directly on the shore of Lake Lugano. The spacious and spatially
differentiated new building is an architectonic hybrid that
combines a museum for contemporary art, a convention centre,
various restaurants and cafes as well as a theatre under one
roofscape. The theatre is not only equipped as an optimal venue for
operas and theatrical performances, but can also be used as a
concert hall or convention auditorium. Moreover the urban
configuration of the new complex functions as a most convincing
contemporary gateway to the largest city in Ticino. This Opus
volume tries to decipher not only the obvious and hidden
urban-planning aspects of this major project but also its
multilayered formal esthetic and haptic connotations. Thereby the
book pays tribute to a high point of contemporary Ticino
architecture and to Ivano Gianola's late masterpiece.
Text in English and German. The new Leipzig/Halle airport has not
just one, but two predecessors. One was Leipzig-Mockau airport,
opened in 1923 and often still used after the Second World War in
the GDR days to serve the Leipziger Messe. The other was
Leipzig/Halle airport which opened in 1927 and by 1937 was already
the second-largest airport in Germany. Passenger numbers had
increased fourfold by 1994. A master plan was worked out for a
second runway, intended for 3.5 million passengers per year. An
open architectural competition followed and was won by Brunnert und
Partner from Stuttgart. They won with a risky concept that ran
counter to the master plan. Instead of filling the site between the
two runways the architects designed a huge bridge structure
spanning the railway track and integrating the car-park, the mall,
the check-in hall, the access road and the transfer to the railway
station. This concludes the first building phase, which begins at
the existing terminal and ends beyond the railway lines. The
concept of the bridge will not be complete until the second
building phase, although it can already be made out quite clearly.

dicken Buchern niedergeschriebene Spiegelung vergangener
Wirklichkeit angesehen. Der Geschichtsunterricht tragt fur das
Zustandekommen und Verfestigen einer solchen Auffassung grosse
Mitverantwortung. Geschichtsunterricht baut bis heute zu einem
Grossteil auf vorformuliertem und narrativem Wissen auf. Schuler
entgegnen. In jeder sozialen Beziehung gehoren Perspektiven,
Perspektiveneinsicht und Perspektivenwechsel zu den
Grundvoraussetzungen menschlichen Handelns. Mehrperspektivitat bzw.

Marz 2003 kommentieren
konnte.

Since the end of the 20th century, an unprecedented number of
remarkable museums have been built. None have had bigger worldwide
implications than Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao
(199197). Until, that is, the new Musee des Confluences in Lyon was
opened to the public, in late 2014. It was created by Wolf D. Prix
of the Coop Himmelb(l)au team, which was founded in the 1970s. Many
avant-garde groups from those wild years such as Archigram,
Superstudio, Archizoom, Haus-Rucker-Co, and the Japanese
Metabolists are now consigned to the past, but the Coop
Himmelb(l)au architecture firm, whose special aspiration was always
to bring into the world buildings that overcome the pull of the
earth buildings 'to float on the horizon like clouds' is more in
demand than ever. The finest demonstration of this endeavour to
date can now be admired in Lyon. Functioning as a museum of human
history, this impressive concrete, metal and glass colossus truly
does appear to float above the peninsula at the confluence of the
Rhone and the Saone. Like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, this new
building, so impossible to overlook, is an inspiration for the
revita-lisation of disrupted urban areas and the valorisation of
derelict industrial areas within the city precincts, but also far
beyond Lyon. This Opus volume deals with the origins, construction,
function and formal appearance of the Musee des Confluences, and
also offers a preliminary theoretically based evaluation of the
architecture of the building. Frank R. Werner was professor of
history and architecture theory at the Staatliche Akademie der
Bildenden Kunste Stuttgart from 1990 until 1994 and director of the
Institut fur Architekturgeschichte und Architekturtheorie at the
Bergische Universitat in Wuppertal from 1993 until his retirement
in 2012. He studied painting, architecture and history of
architecture in Mainz, Hanover and Stuttgart. Christian Richters
studied communication design at the Folkwang-schule in Essen. He is
one of the most sought-after architecture photographers in Europe.
To date he has been represented in the Opus series by 14 volumes,
including ones about the embassies of the Nordic countries and the
Bode Museum in Berlin, the Nieuwe Luxor Theater in Rotterdam and
the BMW Welt in Munich. See also: Opus 66. Coop Himmelb(l)au, BMW
