Passive House Details introduces the concepts, principles, and
design processes of building ultralow-energy buildings. The
objective of this book is to provide design goals, research,
analysis, systems, details, and inspiring images of some of the
most energy-efficient, carbon-neutral, healthy, and satisfying
buildings currently built in the region. Other topics included:
heat transfer, moisture management, performance targets, and
climatic zones. Illustrated with more than 375 color images, the
book is a visual catalog of construction details, materials, and
systems drawn from projects contributed from forty firms. Fourteen
in-depth case studies demonstrate the most energy-efficient systems
for foundations, walls, floors, roofs, windows, doors, and more.
Exploring the development of educational provision and contemporary
issues, this bookcovers the countries that made up the European
Union from its foundation to the signing of the Treaty of Nice:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and The
Netherlands. The chapters, written by regional experts, offer a
review of contemporary national and regional educational structures
and policies, research innovation and trends, as well as covering
selected issues and problems including the effects of educational
reform and systemic changes within the school and university
systems, minority languages, and intercultural changes for
indigenous and new immigrant populations.

With the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Economic
Community on 1 January 1973, the opportunity presented itself for a
study of open-end investment funds in the enlarged Community. The
resulting book, which in a way is a natural sequel to the study
Investment and Unit Trusts in Britain and America. (Elek: London,
1968), in which Dr Corner collaborated with Mr H. Burton, has been
a long time in preparation, simply because of the sheer volume of
statistical material- in particular, consistent sets of reports and
accounts of all the EEC and Swiss investment funds - which has had
to be collected. As a result, some of the analysis is based on what
will inevitably be somewhat dated material at the time of
publication. Unfortunately this is a handicap suffered by all such
statistical work, unless one has large financial and manpower
resources. We have done our best to update certain key statistics
wherever this has been possible.

Argues for the financial backing from governments and industry for

Brexit is a tale of two unions, not one: the British and the
European unions. Their origins are different, but both struggle to
maintain unity in diversity and both have to face the challenge of
populism and claims of democratic deficit. Mark Corner suggests
that the »four nations« that make up the UK can only survive as
part of a single nation-state, if the country looks more
sympathetically at the very European structures from which it has
chosen to detach itself. This study addresses both academic and lay
audiences interested in the current situation of the UK,
particularly the strains raised by devolution and Brexit.
There are more - and less - effective ways for businesses, NGOs and
governments to promote and encourage sustainable behaviour, and
some common pitfalls to avoid. Behaviour Change for Sustainability
offers a variety of techniques for creating a lasting shift to
pro-environmental behaviours, including: - the definitive guide to
building a sustainable behaviour campaign that works - engaging
employees and embedding sustainability into the culture of an
organisation - using gamification as part of a sustainability
strategy.
Promoting sustainable behaviour is a critical part of society's
response to climate change. This short, practical book shows you
how to build a sustainable behaviour campaign that works. There are
more and less effective ways for businesses, NGOs and governments
to encourage people to act in a more sustainable way, and some
common pitfalls to avoid. By summarising 'what really works' and
pulling out the most important take-home messages from the evidence
base, this book contains all the tools you need to maximise the
success of your sustainable behaviour initiative -- in households,
when commuting, in the workplace and beyond. By looking beyond
individual behaviours to people's sense of identity and values; by
incorporating social signals that provide such important cues for
our everyday behaviour; by pointing out strategies that attract
(and keep) people's interest; and by understanding how to break bad
habits and create good ones, this guide offers the best chance of
making a sustainable behaviour campaign work, to create a lasting
change in behaviour.
Signs of God reveals why discussion of the nature of miracles is of
central rather than marginal importance where belief in God is
concerned. Miracles cannot be shunted to one side as an
embarrassing hangover from a 'pre-scientific age'. Miracles have
played an important role in the history of all the major world
religions, and many religious believers claim that they continue to
do so. Yet they have also been criticized from a philosophical
viewpoint as incompatible with a belief in laws of nature, and
those who seek to have their religious beliefs properly attuned to
the modern world often prefer to do without them. This accessible
book examines the nature of miracles both in philosophical and
historical terms, and concludes that, whether or not miracles
happen, it is difficult to see how religious belief could survive
without them.

This text offers a critical review of approaches and concerns that
have recently defined the field of media research. The contributors
to this volume analyze and reflect upon dominant themes and debates
that have made media research an increasingly important element of
political, social and cultural enquiry. Contributors drawn from the
UK, USA, Canada and Belgium consider the relationships between
media research and media policy in different national and
international contexts. Focusing on the European Union,
East-Central Europe, North America and Latin America, these
chapters assess the impact of social, economic and political
circumstances on policy debates and the shaping of a research
agenda. The final chapter adopts a trans-atlantic perspective in
tracing and analyzing the history of the medias role in reporting
war. This survey firmly places media research in the wider context
of political and social change and its analysis, and provides a
defining but also questioning perspective on its achievements.

International Media Research offers a rigorous and critical review
of key approaches and concerns that have recently defined the field
of media research. The contributors to this volume analyse and
reflect upon dominant themes and debates that have made media
research an increasingly important element of political, social and
cultural enquiry. The book opens with an introduction which surveys
the current state of the field, and continues with a critical
evaluation of the work of the leading media scholar, Elihu Katz. It
goes on to explore the relationship between media studies and
adjacent fields: cultural studies and new work on gender and
sexuality. Contributors drawn from the UK, USA, Canada and Belgium

America, these chapters assess the impact of social, economic and
political circumstances on policy debates and the shaping of a
research agenda. The final chapter adopts a transatlantic
perspective in tracing and analysing the history of the media's
role in reporting war. This major survey firmly places media
research in the wider context of political and social change and
its analysis, and provides a defining but also questioning
perspective on its achievements.
The phenomena of `enterprise' and `heritage' might at first thought seem unrelated: this book sets out to show that the two concepts are not only related but deeply interdependent. If `enterprise' can be used to define the official encouragement of the values of the market society, then the growth of the heritage industry can be seen as a manifestation of the entrepreneurial spirit - marketing the past so that it is accessible to the man or woman in the street. Using case studies, commentary and critique, the contributors to this lively volume discuss the importance of `enterprise' and `heritage' in British social and cultural life, with examples drawn from film, television, literature, urban planning, architecture, government advertising, information technology and tourism.

Fashion is the most immediate and intimate form of self-expression.
Faster than anything else, what we wear tells the story of who we
are - or who we want to be. Yet even as fashion touches the lives
of each and every one of us, it can seem mysterious. Who better to
guide readers into the dizzying world of fashion than Frances
Corner, Head of London College of Fashion and a leading expert on
this rapidly expanding, increasingly global, always exciting
industry? In 101 provocative entries Corner teases out the glorious
intricacies and contradictions of an industry that simultaneously
values technology and craft, timeless style and fast fashion, the
bespoke and the mass-market, consumption and sustainability,
cold-hard numbers and creative expression. From `Karl Lagerfeld and
High-Tech Fur' to `The White Shirt' to `The One Trillion Dollar
Business', each entry offers a unique avenue into fashion and its
impact, both positive and negative, on lives around the globe.
Accessible, instructive and hugely enjoyable, this book will be
essential reading for anyone involved in fashion, business,
education and beyond.

Summer of Caprice, a captivating comic novel first published in
1926, is a classic of Czech literature, yet it is little known
elsewhere. Commonly considered untranslatable due to the
complexities of the text, which is characterized by a playful
narrative and an exceptional mastery of language, and its profound
cultural context, it is rendered here in English that beautifully
captures Vladislav Vancura's experimental style or, as the author
himself called it, his "poetism in prose." Mixing the archaic with
the innovative, raw colloquialisms with biblical quotations, Summer
of Caprice opens an uproarious window onto the Czech spirit, humor,
and way of life.
In this beautiful retelling of a folktale from Greenland, an
unlikely friendship develops between a lonely old woman and a baby
polar bear. With stunning artwork from Chris Corner, this book
explores the moving relationship between human and animal as the
bear cub grows up. Collins Big Cat Progress books are specifically
designed for children at Key Stage 2 who have a Key Stage 1 reading
level, giving them age-appropriate texts that they can read,
building their confidence and fostering positive attitudes towards
reading. Text type: A traditional story Curriculum links:
A favorite work of Czech humor, We Were a Handful depicts the
adventures of five boys from a small Czech town through the diary
of Petr Bajza, the grocer's son. Written by Karel Polacek at the
height of World War II before his deportation to Auschwitz in 1944,
this book draws on the happier years of Polacek's own childhood as
inspiration. As we look upon the world through Petr's eyes, we,
too, marvel at the incomprehensible world of grownups; join in
fights between gangs of neighborhood kids; and laugh at the
charming language of boys, a major source of the book's humor. This
translation at last offers English-language readers the opportunity
to share in Petr's (and Polacek's) childhood and reminds us that
joy and laughter are possible even in the darkest times.
