In our complex, fast changing society, health is strongly influenced by the continuously changing interactions between organisations and their employees. Three major fields contribute to health-oriented improvements of these interactions: occupational health, organizational health and public health. As currently only partial links exist amongst these fields, the book aims to explore potential synergies more systematically. Considering the high mental and social demands in a service and knowledge sector economy, the first part of the book focuses on work-related psychosocial factors. As a large proportion of inequalities in health in developed countries can be explained by inequalities in working conditions, those psychosocial factors with a particularly high public health impact are highlighted. As addressing these psychosocial factors requires to involve the organization as the key change agent, the second part covers approaches to improve public health through organizational level health interventions. The last section takes a look into the future of occupational, organizational and public health: what are the future challenges regarding occupational health and how can they be tackled within and beyond the organizational level. Overall, this integrating book will help to broaden the evidence-base, legitimacy and efficacy of occupational- and organizational-level health interventions and thus increase their public health impact.

In this book, we report on research in methods of computational magneto- hydrodynamics supported by the United States Department of Energy under Contract EY-76-C-02-3077 with New York University. The work has re- sulted in a computer code for mathematical analysis of the equilibrium and stability of a plasma in three dimensions with toroidal geometry but no sym- metry. The code is listed in the final chapter. In computing science design plays an eminently important role. By now, it is quite clear that the issue of proper design of programs within a formal calculus is one of the most interesting and most difficult parts of computing science. Many demanding problems have to be envisaged here such as notations, rules and calculi, and the study of semantic models. We are 'far away from comprehensive and widely accepted solutions in these areas. Discussions at the summer school have clearly shown that people have quite different perspectives and priorities with respect to these three main areas. There is a general agreement that notation is very important. Here, notation is not so much used in the sense of "syntactic sugar," but rather in the sense of abstract syntax, in the sense of language constructs. Proper notation can significantly improve our understanding of the nature of the objects that we are dealing with and simplify the formal manipulation of these objects. However, influenced by educational background, habits, and schools of thought there are quite different tastes with respect to notation. The papers in these proceedings show very clearly how different those notations can be even when talking about quite similar objects.

In this book, we describe in detail a numerical method to study the equilibrium and stability of a plasma confined by a strong magnetic field in toroidal geometry without two-dimensional symmetry. The principal appli cation is to stellarators, which are currently of interest in thermonuclear fusion research. Our mathematical model is based on the partial differential equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The main contribution is a computer code named BETA that is listed in the final chapter. This work is the natural continuation of an investigation that was presented in an early volume of the Springer Series in Computational Physics (cf. 3]). Mitochondria are complex organelles, possessing a double-membrane and even their own genome, the mtDNA. They play a pivotal role in cellular metabolism, respiration, and production of ATP essential for the normal function of all human organ systems. It is not surprising, therefore, that genetic defects of mitochondrial functions cause a wide spectrum of human diseases. This book provides the first modern and truly comprehensive coverage of the biochemistry, genetics, and pathology of mitochondria in different organisms. This handbook is a sequel to an earlier volume entitled "A Theory of Supercritical Wing Sections, with Computer Programs and Examples." Since the completion of the first volume, which we shall refer to as Volume I (cf. ll), some effort has been made to improve our airfoil design program. A number of more desirable air foils have been designed. In addition several of our wing sections have been tested in wind tunnels. We should like to make this material available here, since it is more convenient to use the design program in conjunction with data for a fairly broad range of examples. Moreover, we have developed new analysis programs that supersede our previous work. Chapter I is devoted to a brief discussion of the mathematics involved in our additions and modifications. There is only a mini mum emphasis on theory, since the representation of important physical phenomena such as boundary layer shock wave interaction and separation is partly empirical. It is our contention, however, that the computer programs provide a better simulation than might have been expected. Chapter II presents numerical results found by our new methods, as well as comparisons with experimental data. Chapter III contains a discussion of the use of the program together with Fortran listings."

At present, there is considerable interest in supercritical wing technology for the development of aircraft designed to fly near the speed of sound. The basic principle is the suppression of boundary layer separation by shifting the shock waves that occur on the wing toward the trailing edge and making them as weak as possible. The purpose of this report is to make available to the engineering public mathematical methods for the design of supercritical wings. These methods depend on the numerical solution of the partial differential equations of two-dimensional gas dynamics. The main contribution is a computer program for the design of shockless transonic airfoils using the hodograph transformation and analytic continuation into the complex domain. Another contribution is a program for the analysis of transonic flow with shocks past an airfoil at off-design conditions. In our design work we include a turbulent boundary layer correction. Part I of the paper is devoted to a description of the mathemati cal theory and need not be studied by those primarily concerned with running the programs. Part II is a manual for users of our programs which is independent of the theoretical part. In Part III and in Appendices II and III we give numerical examples and discuss computa tional results. The main substance of the report, however, is contained in the listing of the computer programs themselves in Appendix IV. We have used the Fortran language throughout and we have included numerous comment cards in the listing."
