Maritime Professions - Issues and Perspectives (Hardcover): Agnieszka KoƂodziej-Durnaƛ, Frank Sowa, Marie Grasmeier Maritime Professions - Issues and Perspectives (Hardcover)
Agnieszka KoƂodziej-Durnaƛ, Frank Sowa, Marie Grasmeier
R3,413 Discovery Miles 34 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

On a global scale, more than 40 million people make their living working directly at sea as fishers, seafarers, in aquaculture or seabed-mining, or related occupations such as dockworkers, shipbuilding, logistics, maritime administration, secondary branches of shipping, marine tourism and other maritime professions. The study of maritime labour and occupations is still under-represented in the social sciences and humanities. With the present volume, we attempt to fill this gap by representing recent research on maritime professions from a sociological perspective drawing on a wide variety of disciplinary approaches and subject matters.

Maritime Spaces and Society (Hardcover): Agnieszka Kolodziej-Durnas, Frank Sowa, Marie C. Grasmeier Maritime Spaces and Society (Hardcover)
Agnieszka Kolodziej-Durnas, Frank Sowa, Marie C. Grasmeier
R3,789 Discovery Miles 37 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Maritime spaces are socially constructed by humans and refer to seas and islands, coasts, port cities and villages, as well as ships and other human-made marine structures. Social interaction with marine environments and living beings, e.g. in a symbolic, cultural or economic manner, has led to the emergence of spatial structures which affect the knowledge, beliefs, meanings and obstinately patterns. Those structures shape mutual expectations of human beings and form the perception, imagination, or memory of inhabitants of maritime spaces. They enable or restrict human action, construct people's everyday life, their norms and values, and are changeable. Contributors include: Jan Asmussen, Robert Bartlomiejski, Benjamin Bowles, Isabel Duarte, Eduardo Sarmento Ferreira, Rita Gracio, Marie C. Grasmeier, Karolina Izdebska, Seung Kuk Kim, Arkadiusz Kolodziej, Agnieszka Kolodziej-Durnas, Maciej Kowalewski, Urszula Kozlowska, Ulrike Kronfeld-Goharani, Rute Muchacho, Giacomo Orsini, Wlodzimierz Karol Pessel, Celia Quico, Harini Sivalingam, Joana Sousa, Frank Sowa, Nuno Cintra Torres, and Gunter Warsewa.

The Transformation of Work in Welfare State Organizations - New Public Management and the Institutional Diffusion of Ideas... The Transformation of Work in Welfare State Organizations - New Public Management and the Institutional Diffusion of Ideas (Paperback)
Frank Sowa, Ronald Staples, Stefan Zapfel
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How has New Public Management influenced social policy reform in different developed welfare states? New managerialism is conceptualized as a paradigm, which not only shapes the decision-making process in bureaucratic organizations but also affects the practice of individuals (citizens). Public administrations have been expected to transform from traditional bureaucratic organizations into modern managerial service providers by adopting a business model that requires the efficient and effective use of resources. The introduction of managerial practices, controlling and accounting systems, management by objectives, computerization, service orientation, increased outsourcing, competitive structures and decentralized responsibility are typical of efforts to increase efficiency. These developments have been accompanied by the abolition of civil service systems and fewer secure jobs in public administrations. This book provides a sociological understanding of how public administrations deal with this transformation, how people's role as public servants is affected, and what kind of strategies emerge either to meet these new organizational requirements or to circumvent them. It shows how hybrid arrangements of public services are created between the public and the private sphere that lead to conflicts of interest between private strategies and public tasks as well as to increasingly homogeneous social welfare provision across Europe.

Social Work and the Making of Social Policy (Paperback): Frank Sowa, Markus Gottwald, Pawel Polawski, Sergio Sanchez... Social Work and the Making of Social Policy (Paperback)
Frank Sowa, Markus Gottwald, Pawel Polawski, Sergio Sanchez Castineira, Ravit Alfandari, …
R762 Discovery Miles 7 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bringing together international case studies, this book offers theoretical and empirical insights into the interaction between social work and social policy. Moving beyond existing studies on policy practice, the book employs the policy cycle as a core analytical frame and focuses on the influence of social work(ers) in the problem definition, agenda setting, policy formulation and implementation of social policy. Twenty-three contributors offer examples of policy making from seven different countries and demonstrate how social work practitioners can become political actors, while also encouraging policy makers to become aware of the potential of social work for the social policy-making process.
