Poor design and wasted funding characterize today's American playgrounds. A range of factors--including a litigious culture, overzealous safety guidelines, and an ethos of risk aversion--have created uniform and unimaginative playgrounds. These spaces fail to nurture the development of children or promote playgrounds as an active component in enlivening community space.
Solomon's book demonstrates how to alter the status quo by allying data with design. Recent information from the behavioral sciences indicates that kids need to take risks; experience failure but also have a chance to succeed and master difficult tasks; learn to plan and solve problems; exercise self-control; and develop friendships. Solomon illustrates how architects and landscape architects (most of whom work in Europe and Japan) have already addressed these needs with strong, successful playground designs. These innovative spaces, many of which are more multifunctional and cost effective than traditional playgrounds, are both sustainable and welcoming. Having become vibrant hubs within their neighborhoods, these play sites are models for anyone designing or commissioning an urban area for children and their families.
The Science of Play, a clarion call to use playground design to deepen the American commitment to public space, will interest architects, landscape architects, urban policy makers, city managers, local politicians, and parents.

Catch share programs are a fishery management tool that dedicates a secure share of quota allowing individual fishermen, fishing cooperatives, fishing communities, or other entities to harvest a fixed amount of fish. With clearly defined fishing privileges, fishermen no longer need to "race to fish," but instead can make harvest decisions based upon market conditions, improving economic performance, and weather conditions, which improves crew safety. These incentives can reduce the cost of taking conservation actions and can encourage individual fishing choices that are more consistent with sustainable fishing practices such as reducing low-value or undersized catch that is discarded at sea but is frequently associated with high mortality rates. The ability to align fishermen's economic incentives with the long-term biological health of the fishery singularly distinguishes catch share programs from traditional fishery management strategies (i.e., trip limits, gear restrictions, etc.). Nationwide, there are 15 catch share programs currently in operation. This book provides basic information on the economic performance of U.S. catch share programs using a standard set of indicators that are uniformly applied across these highly diverse programs.

Cooperative Breeding in Mammals (Paperback): Nancy G. Solomon, Jeffrey A. French Cooperative Breeding in Mammals (Paperback)
Nancy G. Solomon, Jeffrey A. French
R1,731 Discovery Miles 17 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cooperative breeding refers to a social system in which individuals other than the parents provide care for the offspring. Since individuals delay breeding and invest in the offspring of others, cooperative breeding poses a challenge to a Darwinian explanation of the evolution of social behaviour. The contributors to this book explore the evolutionary, ecological, behavioural and physiological basis of cooperative breeding in mammals. The book contains a collection of chapters by the leading researchers in the field, and it is dedicated exclusively to the study of mammalian cooperative breeding. It will appeal to zoologists, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and to those interested in animal behaviour.

"Just the kind of bridge we need to span the ideological wars and make schools work for teachers and their students."
Ann Lieberman
Senior Scholar, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Visiting Professor, Stanford University

"In her supremely well-written and useful book, Dr. Solomon has woven together historical perspective, research, and her own considerable experience to address reforming schools in the 21st Century.  After defining the problem (productive change), Dr. Solomon has examined ?old? solutions and conceptualized new ones to create better schools for students."
Nancy Goldman, Director of Curriculum
Pearl River School District
Pearl River, NY

"Standards and implementation of the learning process go hand in hand. The Assessment Bridge makes us clearly aware of the present need for a bridge between the two so that standards may not create greater failure and the rejection of formal education by many children."
Matthew Foley, Pastor
Epiphany Roman Catholic Church

We must ensure that tests serve the needs of education?not force education to fulfill needs of test creators.

The Assessment Bridge is award-winning educator Pearl Solomon?s penetrating and cogent examination of today?s high-stakes standards-based testing movement, which seems to compromise effective teaching and learning rather than improve it. Committed teachers know the importance of student assessment as a guide to classroom instruction. Restoring assessment to its proper place in the curriculum is the goal of this clear-headed analysis. Chapters cover:

  • The origins and history of the current testing movement
  • How good tests guide teaching and learning
  • How to balance standardized tests, curriculum standards, and critical local variables such as class size, socioeconomics, and teacher attitudes
  • How to build bridges from test anxiety to improved student learning, teacher training, curriculum and instruction, and school administration and leadership
  • How to recruit, train, and nurture a new generation of talented, committed, and effective teachers

Emphasizing the positive at all times, Solomon guides us toward creation of better schools where the best teachers and school leaders link tests to standards, curriculum, and improved student learning.

'I will be quoting many of the key points presented in the book often to others in my school' - Carol Amos, Teacher Leader/Mathematics Coordinator, Twinfield Union School, Plainfield, VT 'Makes a distinct contribution to the field of mathematics, explaining in clear language the relevance of the various concepts as they apply to elementary mathematics curricula' - Melissa Miller, Teacher, Randall G. Lynch Middle School, Farmington, AR 'A wonderful resource for readers who will be developing curriculum and lessons. Each content branch is clearly explained and has examples for easy development. Professionals will be able to easily build further examples' - Joseph DiGarbo, Teacher, Mohegan Elementary School, Uncasville, CT This updated and expanded new edition provides elementary math teachers with a step-by-step approach to planning standards-based curriculum, instruction, and now assessment, too. Pearl Gold Solomon covers the essential concepts and skills defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) using a simple-to-follow matrix that aligns activities and problems for the classroom with specific NCTM standards, and then provides appropriate assessments for each. An essential handbook for grades PreK-5, it provides detailed guidance, sample activities, problems, and assessments, all grade appropriate and ready to use. Highlights include a rubric, test specifications, other assessment resources, suggestions for working with calculators, educational software and graphics programs, and web sites. Teachers will find this invaluable when they: o Review their knowledge of mathematical concepts o Plan curriculum for a specific lesson, grade level, or an entire school o Respond to individual conceptual or procedural challenges among their learners o Assess student knowledge, both formally and informally Once again, Solomon turns confusing pedagogy into accessible instruction, giving new teachers clarity and experienced teachers a base that can easily be built upon. This is an indispensable resource for instructional leaders, district planners, staff developers, math coaches, and individual teachers seeking to enhance their instructional repertoire.

Cooperative Breeding in Mammals (Hardcover, New): Nancy G. Solomon, Jeffrey A. French Cooperative Breeding in Mammals (Hardcover, New)
Nancy G. Solomon, Jeffrey A. French
R4,122 Discovery Miles 41 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cooperative breeding refers to a social system in which individuals other than the parents provide care for the offspring. In addition to alloparental care, two further characteristics are common among species exhibiting cooperative breeding: delayed dispersal and delayed reproduction. Among vertebrates, cooperative breeding is expressed most prominently in birds and mammals. The book explores the phenomenon in a wide variety of mammals, including rodents, primates, viverrids, and carnivores. Comparative studies of cooperative breeding provide important tests for the origin and maintenance of sociality in complex groups. Understanding the behavioral and physiological mechanisms underlying cooperative breeding yields insights into the fundamental building blocks of social behavior in animal societies. Although several recent volumes have summarized the state of our knowledge of the ecology and evolution of cooperative breeding in birds, Cooperative Breeding in Mammals is the first book devoted to these issues in mammals, and it will appeal to zoologists, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and those interested in animal behavior.
