R6,322 Discovery Miles 63 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook is a unique and major resource on modern educators of Asia and their contribution to Asian educational development through the 19th and 20th centuries when modernization started in Asia. In one comprehensive volume, this handbook covers a selection of modern educators from East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia – and their contributions to the development of modern education, practically and theoretically. The diversity of cultures and religion as well as the multilinguistic and ethnic context have made Asian modernization unique and complex. Educational modernization in Asia reflected this historical context in many ways and resulted in the diverse forms of learning, teaching, institutions, and administration. Modern Asian educators compiled in this handbook represent various fields of Asian society: not only educational but cultural and social fields like academia, politics, economics, religion, literature, theatre, fine arts, and civic genres including the media. Through this Handbook, readers may discover the individual modern educators, male and female, and their contributions to Asian educational modernization. All of them were committed to the cause of education for children, youth, adults and in particular women. In addition, this volume has an extraordinarily rich subject index which can be an excellent guide and introduction to information touching divergent dynamics of educational developments in modern Asia. This insightful volume is perfect for students and researchers working on history of education, comparative education and educational development, particularly for those interested in Asian contexts.

Social Change in the History of British Education (Paperback): Joyce Goodman, Gary McCulloch, William Richardson Social Change in the History of British Education (Paperback)
Joyce Goodman, Gary McCulloch, William Richardson
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work provides an overall review and analysis of the history of education and of its key research priorities in the British context. It investigates the extent to which education has contributed historically to social change in Britain, how it has itself been moulded by society, and the needs and opportunities that remain for further research in this general area. Contributors review the strengths and limitations of the historical literature on social change in British education over the past forty years, ascertain what this literature tells us about the relationship between education and social change, and map areas and themes for future historical research. They consider both formal and informal education, different levels and stages of the education system, the process and experience of education, and regional and national perspectives. They also engage with broader discussions about theory and methodology. The collection covers a large amount of historical territory, from the sixteenth century to the present, including the emergence of the learned professions, the relationship between society and the economy, the role of higher technological education, the historical experiences of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the social significance of teaching and learning, and the importance of social class, gender, ethnicity, and disability. It involves personal biography no less than broad national and international movements in its considerations. This book will be a major contribution to research as well as a general resource in the history and historiography of education in Britain.

Educational Reconstruction - The 1944 Education Act and the Twenty-first Century (Hardcover): Gary McCulloch Educational Reconstruction - The 1944 Education Act and the Twenty-first Century (Hardcover)
Gary McCulloch
R4,354 Discovery Miles 43 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a clear overview of the debates that surrounded the making of the 1944 Act, which affected every aspect of education in this country. It gives a detailed account of the tripartite divisions into 'three types of child' that were sanctioned in the reforms of the 1940s. At the same time, it also emphasises the idea of education as a civic project which underlay the reforms and which was such an important part of their lasting authority. The education policies of the past decade and the current attempts to shape a new education settlement need to be interpreted in a long-term historical framework and in particular, in relation to the aims and problems of the last great cycle of reform in the 1940s. This book makes an important contribution to the development of such a framework and the social history of education policy in this country.

The book brings together the work of international specialists on Curriculum History and presents research that offers new perspectives and methodologies from which to approach the study of the History of Education and Educational Policy. It offers new debates which rethink the historical study of the curriculum and offers a strong interdisciplinary approach, with contributions across Education, History and the Social Sciences. Educational Reform Legislation in the 20th Century (Hardcover): Gary McCulloch Educational Reform Legislation in the 20th Century (Hardcover)
Gary McCulloch
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Much has been written on Education Acts, yet we have abused and neglected them. The history of educational legislation has been written off as 'Acts and facts', and the conventional approach to writing about them has been concerned with politics, and especially with the men responsible for them. On the centenary of the 1918 Education Act and Education (Scotland) Act, and the thirtieth anniversary of the 1988 Education Reform Act, we can rightly compare them alongside the other two agenda-setting master-Acts of the 20th century, those of 1902 and 1944. These latter Acts, themselves landmarks of legislation, have each attracted several significant articles that have been published in the British Journal of Educational Studies. Between them, these provide a detailed commentary on the key legislation that has framed the development of UK education that is also open to critique and challenge. The anniversaries of these key Education Acts are also starting points for broader discussion of continuities, changes and contestation in legislation involving the regime of power, control and regulation of education. This can also include consideration of the international context and the relationship between educational and other social legislation and reform.

The Struggle for the History of Education (Hardcover, New): Gary McCulloch The Struggle for the History of Education (Hardcover, New)
Gary McCulloch
R4,628 Discovery Miles 46 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The history of education is a contested field of study, and has represented a site of struggle for the past century of its development. It is highly relevant to an understanding of broader issues in history, education and society, and yet has often been regarded as being merely peripheral rather than central to them.

Over the years the history of education has passed through a number of approaches, more recently engaging with a different areas such as curriculum, teaching and gender, although often losing sight of a common cause. In this book McCulloch contextualizes the struggle for educational history, explaining and making suggestions for the future on a number of topics, including:

  • finding a set of common causes for the field as a whole
  • engaging more effectively with social sciences and humanities while maintaining historical integrity
  • forming a rationale of missions and goals for the field
  • defining the overall content of the subject, its priorities and agendas
  • and reassessing the relevance of educational history to current educational and social issues.

Throughout this book the origins of unresolved debates and tensions about the nature of the field of history of education are discussed and key examples are analysed to present a new view of future development.

The Struggle for the History of Education demonstrates the key changes and continuities in the field and its relationship with education, history and the social sciences over the past century. It also reveals how the history of education can build on an enhanced sense of its own past, and the common and integrating mission that makes it distinctive, interesting and important for a wide range of scholars from different backgrounds.

Philosophers and Kings - Education for Leadership in Modern England (Hardcover, New): Gary McCulloch Philosophers and Kings - Education for Leadership in Modern England (Hardcover, New)
Gary McCulloch
R2,540 Discovery Miles 25 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Philosophers and Kings examines how the theme of 'education for leadership' has developed, changed and declined in English secondary education during the twentieth century. Once celebrated as an authentic and distinctive English tradition, education for leadership has fallen into decline and disrepute, usurped by the ideals of equality and competitive individualism and discredited by its own inherent limitations and implications. There have, however, been important attempts during the present century to revive and reassert education for leadership by adapting it to a rapidly changing social and political context. These efforts at rehabilitation originally centred on the elite public schools, but increasingly involved state secondary schools that catered for larger groups of the population: the classic tradition began to mutate in directions that allowed it to support the claims of industry and science. Indeed, education for leadership could prove attractive to radical and even socialist educational initiatives, but the perceived failure of the latter, and the deepening of other forms of educational and social inequality, rendered the concept increasingly suspect in the changing educational and political climate of the 1980s.

Gary McCulloch

This book offers students guidance in approaching documentary research. McCulloch takes account of the implications of contemporary legal, ethical, and technological changes for documentary research and promotes documentary research as a valid research strategy in education and the social sciences. He examines international comparisons in the uses of documentary research, including the role of cultural and political contexts in allowing or denying access to records and the conditions imposed upon their uses.
The chapters explore a wide range of documentary source material that are available for researchers in the social sciences, for example: policy reports, autobiographies, diaries, committee papers, correspondence, school magazines, textbooks, log books, newspapers, local registers, and visual sources such as photographs and paintings. The book emphasises new approaches to the study of such sources, and ways in which they may be studied in combination or with different research strategies such as interviews, surveys, and questionnaires.
