Ausgehend von alteren avantgardistischen Traditionen der Aufklarung, der Franzoesischen Revolution und des Vormarz bezieht Benjamin jungere Epochen des Nachmarz und der Jahrhundertwende um 1900 in seine Betrachtung ein, um sich mit den kunstlerischen Revolutionen seiner Epoche, der Weimarzeit, auseinanderzusetzen.
